Monoii should have declared Asa the winner. And a new technique should be invented - winning through sheer brilliance. He took the rightful win in a rematch in a spectacular way.
Asa is the reason I became interested in Sumo. His technique is amazing. He finds the way to win. JSA sucks for not allowing this incredible wrestler to continue. Big loss for Sumo.
It's too difficult to decide about a Shi-Tai rule. Because it's impossible to know if the wrestler is really "dead" or he is trying to invent a difensive creation. This is one of these cases.
Kotonowaka was pretty lucky to get the doutai decision for the first call tbh. Kabaite is usually called in situations like oshitaoshi where it is obvious one man is going down ('shinitai') and that the upper man is going down on top of him, and so puts his hands out to cover him (kabaite). This wasn't at all obvious here and Asa wasn't 'shinitai' since he managed to keep up.
Great bout though, and good to see kotonowaka when he was still throwing people around.
A terrible call...it was obvious that Kotonowaka was putting his ahnd down to protect Asashoryu, and thus the win should have been his via the kabaite rule. Nonetheless, kudos to Asashoryu for fighitng to the bitter end.
to protect him from what falling on his back? there was nothing dangerous about that fall. Kotonowaka just screwed up. They were still in the ring. It wasn't like they were going off the side.
To protect Asashoryu from 350 pounds of Kotonowaka falling on his face. There is a rule that allows the dominant rikishi to put his hand down first to protect his opponent from potential injury when the bout is decided, as it was in this case.
I think the exception rule "Shinitai" is not so comon today. The judges tend to rely on the videos, and they do not care whether the wrestlers are "Shikitai" or "Ikitai". There are lot of discussions about this.
朝青龍は完全に残っている。琴ノ若は左手のつき手のあとに右のひざが落ちたがそのときもまだ朝青龍は残っていた。取り直しではなく朝青龍の勝ちにしてもいいくらいだ。

In the second match Asashoryu used his upper leg to help making Kotonowaka fall. Is it legal to use legs in sumo?

Admirable. I'm Asashoryu's total fan. He's really the greatest, and it seems to be what bothers a lot of people.
