Feb 1964 --7 months before [his wife] Gracie Allen's untimely heart-attack death.
( 4:49 ) Kinda ironic that Burns says he doesn't feel like Bobby Darin. Both Darin and Gracie died young of heart disease . . . and he went on to 100.
A funny clip ( 5:19 ) not only for that Channing story, but because the panelists guessed all of his friends!
How does Arlene remain upright? That has to be the biggest necklace on TV. I find her funny (4:09 ) when ( 4:20 ) revelation hits her.
@tomitstube Funny you ask that. On his radio show, Gracie Allen "adopts" Mickey Rooney, then she tells Bill Goodwin (the announcer) that she and George now have a son, and he's in the bedroom. Bill opens the door and says "I knew it, George is so old he had an old son" :o)
Nathan Birnbaum = George Burns = GENIUS of GENTLE Comedy. He worshipped his best pal Jack Benney and his beloved wife Gracie.
Born 20 Jan. 1896 Died 9 March 1996 RIP
(My two favourite quotes:~ "Sure I'm glad to be here! At 98 I'm glad to be ANYWHERE!".......&......."At my age [99] you don't even buy GREEN Ban-ann-as!")
Thank Heaven x 1,000,000 for such as George & Gracie.
I did not finish the punch line from the script I mentioned. When Gracie told George that she was going to have a kidney to kidney talk with herself George said" Gracie isn't that heart to heart. "Gracie says, George you don't know anything. How many kidneys do you have? George "two" Gracie" How many hearts do you have".George "one". Gracie," Well then how can you have a heart to heart talk with yourself if you only have one heart?" Some how all her sayings made sense in a convoluted way.
I wrote comedy for George Burns in his latter years. He was a class act. I wrote scripts for him also as if Gracie was still living. He loved them and both laughed and cried when reading them. He was totally devoted to her. I had her do a new gig. Wise sayings done Gracie style. He told me he would have put them in the scripts had she been alive. Gracie would say things such as I'm going to have a kidney to kidney talk with myself. He loved my stuff and I loved him.God bless George Burns!
thank you for the story! What a fabulous time you must have had! I've been a fan of Burns & Allen, as well as George Burns, since I was 15. I'm only 38 now, but I'm still so enamored and intrigued at their legacy!
I adore George Burns! I love how Bennett starts to take the blindfold off and then later Martin asks Dorothy if she has had hers off! How funny when George gave it away that it was him! Such a great clip!!!
One would imagine if more celebrity male stars would smoke cigars like the old days of the 50's - perhaps we would not be in the fix we face today- there is aquality of presence , an air of dignity about a secure man whop smokes a cigar-
i cant believe bennett asked george if he was nat king cole after saying yes to being a comedian. then he tried to take his mask off when george said yes he was nat king cole LOLOL
Oh what a cute, funny, wonderful man this was! His book about Gracie is just beautiful. Thanks so much for posting this, it's always a joy to see and hear George Burns
George said in one of his (many) books that he always had the cigar because it gave him something to do with his hands. Also, he pointed out that he could take a puff to let the audience know that Gracie had just said something funny. What a character he was!
I found it interesting that none of them said anything about Gracie. I suppose they all knew that she had been in very poor health during the past few years.
@torchkit There were quite a few celebs in the 50's that smoked cigars mainly all the Jewish comedians , Milton Berle, Grocho Marx, George Jessel, Edward G, Robinson besides Burns... so it could have been any one them. It was obvious from the names they thought Burns was the cigar smoke wasn't a factor at all.
@torchkit He always told interviewers he smoked cheap cigars because they weren't as strong as the good ones. I think they did detect the aroma of his cigar because at least three of them seemed to know who he was almost immediately. Or maybe not, I'm typing as I write.
Thanks for posting this, George is so funny! Also, Gracie Allen is one of the funniest people that lived. Such a sweet couple. It really is a shame she died so young.

The joke was that George's real first name was "Nat", or Nathaniel. In fact, that's what Gracie called in in private. He called her "Googie".

It was very common to smoke in public back then. A cigar would not be enough to differentiate between one or another.
