  • I have heard his first three albums more than anyone on the planet I'm sure, learned his music on piano and guitar. Every one of his songs reminds me of a place in time, of mine. His music goes to my core and speaks to my soul like no one else, and that's all I have to say about that.

  • I never heard this beautiful song before (sorry, Fogelberg was never in my radar) but today as I approach our HS 25 yr reunion, it seems to encapsulate the sadness of knowing time has gone by. But I also know there is the flip side to the joy of having lived a full life. Thank you Mr. Fogelberg!

  • There is ONLY one Dan Fogelberg!

  • Wow, what an incredible song, by an incredible performer. I often wondered about the meaning behind the song, its quite obvious it came from his heart. Song brings me to tears everytime.

  • How in the world can ANYONE dislike this song?!?!

RIP, Dan. I miss you every day.

  • I cried while viewing this clip. How could anyone NOT feel this song, this performance of it? You must be heartless.....

  • Great song, but this wasn't a good performance.

  • i never was born in the 80's so i never heard of Dan before. Then a the year that he died, i heard this song, and i was so moved. I am a metal, punk, and really any hardcore music fan and when i heard this song, this song made me think of how time flys and how you will never get them back, only memories last that long to remind you that things come and go and you can't control it. i am 19 and i will miss the years of childhood and teen years, Dan thank you for making this song and rest in peace

  • Dan, you were the soundtrack to my life! Good times and bad, your music always finds my heart. Thank you for sharing.

  • Great song! Thanks for posting.

  • You can tell he is not very robust in this video. He seems particularly melancholy. Perhaps he's pondering his own old lang syne.

  • Thanks for saying so much for us. RIP.

  • I love this version. It's beautiful.

  • Amazing to have been there. Little did we know that Dan was ill and later died of prostate cancer! DAMN cancer. Dan was brilliant and an all around nice man!

  • Dan's memory lives on!

  • People complaining about this version just flat out don't get it. This is absolutely beautiful. Jean I understand completely your viewpoint about honoring Dan's wishes, but just so you know, I come here and listen to this song on here every week and I cry and an memorized just like I am sure many others are. Dan's memory lives on!

  • The reason Soundstage didn't release these for sale was because Dan wasn't happy with his performances that night, so he asked them not to release them. He was in the middle of a tour and didn't feel well that night. This is an illegal bootleg copy filmed off of a television. It would be nice if everyone would honor his wishes and just not post or share the Soundstage performances.

  • @JeanFogelberg ..... Jean...not sure whether you are a relative or not, but the wonder and joy this man brought to all of us, would be a complete waste if never released or worse, put to the sword of the financials that drive the record companies. I bought "the Innocent Age" (magnificent) and others...allow those that have never known him to likewise find him, and honour the memory.

  • I wish performers would just sing a song normally like the record sounds. I hate live performances they never do the original justice. The song is awesome on it's own, don't try to embellish it so much by groaning and screeching.

  • @gibby100 Lol!!

  • I recall hearing this the first time at The Academy of Music in Philadelphia in 1979/1980 I believe. He said he had just written a new song and we were the 2nd audience to hear it. He played solo and you could hear a collective sigh from the audience as the story unfolded. Truly one of the most amazing performances I ever had the honor of seeing. He is missed....

  • prostate cancer is no joke. 4 year suvivor here. what a shame his talent is lost.

    RIP Dan Fogleberg,

Your songs made me very happy. And applied to me.

    soldierjack

  • @soldierjack1 ..God bless you my friend. Will keep you in my prayers..my granpa and my Daddy had this and it is one of the easiest to cure of all cancers But, ONLY if caught on time! I believe a couple of my uncles also had it, i know for sure one did and lived till in his 80's. Stay peaceful....Anamaria

  • Gorgeous talent. Born and raised in East Peoria, Illinois, yet relocated to Deer Isle, Maine, where he died, in his home right off 'The Reach'. Massive loss, but we have his music.

  • what a fantastic song it brings me to tears especially when you know he died

  • Mr. Fogelberg was a great inspiration to me early in my music career. His music is beautiful and a gift to us, his legacy. My prayer is that he is home with our beautiful Saviour. God bless his family and may God bring comfort in your loss.

  • saw Dan do this live in Rockford Il in 2001. . I didn't just cry I sobbed . . miss you Dan . .

  • Great memories of this show in St. Louis. What a wonderful singer/songwriter. One of my faves since he "choreographed" my life from the early days of "Run for the Roses" to his later albums. We lost a great one when he died last year!

  • ...on this new years eve eve, 2009,this song meanz even more az the yearz hav traveled by...

  • The biggest record contest I won was dinner and 2 tickets to see Dan in concert, back in the late 80s. I already had a date and actually had tickets I ended up giving to my sister. Great concert, it was pretty much like on here, no other musicians but him. RIP.

  • For some reason, when the sax came in ...tears steamed down my face. Deep and touching song.

  • beautiful

  • One of my favorite songs ever. I keep thinking of my first girlfriend when I hear this who broke my hear ohh so long ago. But life has been good to me, and her name is Isabelle. I love you babe...

  • you posted this the day he died

  • is that patrick dempsey?,lol rip......

  • This is actually my favorite holiday song. So much more depth and meaning than things like Frosty the snowman lol... Even still. It touches a chord with a young guy like me who spends every holiday alone.

  • I still remember listening to this song on a rainy night in December 1980. This song was released almost a full year before the album it was included on came out. Probably Dan's best known song. Artists this talented don't come along very often!

  • why must the great die young. im only 16 (introduced to dan by my mother) but know that this mans talents reach a very long way.

    RIP

  • i hope you appreciate the great talent that was during the 80's. it is a part of my life that i wont forget.

  • This song grabs IT! The one that got away. The lyrics are so vivid. I can see in my mind exactly how it went down. "The snow turned into rain". The one that got away.

  • how right you are...

  • Truly a wonderful talent, Fogelberg was at home playing his signature ballads and up tempo rock songs. We saw him around 2003 in Wallingford, Ct. He was great and such a pro who was comfortable with the crowd who loved him so much. Each Christmas I will say to my wife what I said this year upon hearing this song, "can you believe Dan Fogelberg is dead?". We loved him and we miss him.

  • Dated my current gf 15 years ago and lost contact immediately after break up, ran into her 2 years ago at a coffee shop lineup and have been together ever since. Played this song for her on our 2nd anniversary and she was blown away by the similarities...amazing lyrics and just reaches the "everyman".

  • Ciarrai3--I was at the same concert in 2003 (at the old Oakdale theater in Wallingford, CT). Dan was an incredible performer and given his sad passing, I am grateful to have been able to see him on that occasion. I am one of Dan's younger fans (now 30) but I have always appreciated his musical talent and his ability to relate to fans through his songs. As you said, we all miss him a great deal. Thank you for your post.

  • something about dan's music transends all styles and brings a tear to everyone's eye that listens. it doesn't matter what kind of music you like. dan wrote from the heart and about real experiences and i think thats why people, including myself, are so touched by his words and music. this one, for example, is easy to relate too. most of us have ran into old lovers and had a conversation about their current lives. if we haven't ran into old lovers, most of us at least wonder about what if...

  • I couldn't agree with you more. Great summation of a man we loved and miss greatly.

  • Magical

  • This has become one of my favorite songs in the past few months--absolutely gorgeous. Thanks for posting this.

  • Dan Fogelberg was one of those magical musicians/songwriters who could touch your heart and soul with eloquence and insight. He was an incredible talent-one who showed me how life has beauty in it's trials; and I truly think he was over looked in the Adult Contemporary world of music for songs that didn't fit the radio. God Bless Him and his family

  • Today (12/16/08) marks the 1st anniversary of the day we said goodbye to Dan Fogelberg

  • I remember seeing him several times. What an honor. The beginning of this song is the 1812 overture slowed down, he told us about writing it at one of the performances.

  • He passed away on December 16th 2007 at 6am at his home in Maine with his wife Jean by his side after his brave battle with cancer was completed. His strength, dignity, and grace in the face of the daunting challenges of this disease were an inspiration to all who knew him.

    A message from Jean

  • in the last two weeks, hear again to Mr. Dan, what can a said I´m 47 years old now and since my teenage hav´nt hear him again, so between the best is is one, make me go back and remember my old lover, really sad he´s gone and I even get notice, for me, the most beautifull and romantic song I ever hear.

  • What?

  • What a talent.

  • he is dead but hes coool

  • is he dead? no offense, i LOVE his songs

  • ill miss u dan

  • I can't ever get through this song without falling apart. It's so poignant I can't believe it.

  • Dan sure didn't phone this performance in.

  • This concert in dvd is a must for Fogelberg fans and probably in that year of this one 2004 nobody knew about Dan's desease but just own Dan and her wife., so i imagine the hard time he was living since that time.

  • My mom taped this final tour of Dan's. I really liked this version of his song. It makes me sad watching this video because at this point, he'd been diagnosed or misdiagnosed with prostate cancer. I adore his music. Vaya Con Dios, Dan.

  • Love this song, always have and always will.

R.I.P. Dan, keep making great music in heaven.

  • chill-bumps.................

  • Pianfully sad,a sharp sadness that I have never known for a singer. he is part of the fabric of my life, love to the family!
