I learned Wing Chun under him for a while. He mentioned that the movements in dummy form is for correcting a wrong movement, so many movements start with a wrong movement. I think his slow motion keeps him from memorize the wrong movements. BTW, he did ask Yip Man to add "gan sao" back to Siu Nim Tou. He said that Yip Man deleted the gan sao because Yip Man is also a short guy. But his another student get really hurt in a sparring by low section punch, then He ask Yip to add "gan sao" back.
Second section: why did he turn ‘ma’ when doing ‘pak sao’ but no ‘ma’ when doing ‘jut da’? At 0:46 sec, after da low bong, why did he skip da side step and ‘bui bo’ when doing da ‘fak sao’? Total lack of practice and total lack of responsibility as a ‘sifu’ ! The rest of da form.....total disorganized and chaos! did da forth before da third...sorry for da students who put him on a pedestal. =(
@mofotox Hi man, I thought you train with sifu Gary Lam in LA right? If you haven't already seen it, I recommend you view sifu David Peterson's wooden dummy dvd. By far the best dvd I've seen on the WSL wing chun system, along with his other 2 dvds. WSL form slightly differs from other as he took the Ip Man form and modified it after all the beimo experiences he had, and made it more effective and efficient! No need to feel sorry for us all man, we're learning real wing chun :D
@khinsau : That’s a pretty egotistical statement. I can change whatever I want and call it Wing Chun too, lol! No, I do not train with Gary Lam, I do not live in US and most important, I can’t afford a memory foam mattress to train with Gary! Some people are so gullible to believe every unsubstantiated claim. Yeah, I ‘modify’ Einstein’s theory of relativity to suit my need….right!
@mofotox I thought I read on youtube you live in california, LA, anyway if you study WSL lineage, you know he incorporates jarm sao and garn sao in the 3rd section of 1st form, most other lineages have dropped the jarm sao eg ip ching/ip chun, thats what I mean man. In my opinion, for anyone to reach the same level of wing chun as WSL, and have the knowledge to develop the fighting system further, we've gotta take the theory and apply it in real beimo 60+ fights as much as he did!
@khinsau : Ah, I read about da jam sao legend bull shit but I did not believe it. It does not make sense. If you follow the BS story, that means WSL did not wait until he learn the complete system, went out to ‘prove’ what he did not learn and came back to Ip Man, demanding to change what he had not learn yet! LOL, such egotistical story. U r an ignorant sucka if you believe this crap. Pity.
@mofotox Learning the complete system in them days took at least 10 years and thats with 5+ hours of training a day. He didn't learn garn sao as he was a small guy. Why is it not believeable?? If at least 3 of his students, Gary, David and Nino have said this to be true, who are we to say it's BS?!! He never "demanded to change what he hadn't learnt", he asked Ip Man for advice as the jarm sao technique couldn't block a low strike, so garn sao was recommended, there's a difference man!!
@mofotox This just shows that despite your ability to step back and honestly critique the Wing Chum system and many of its fake "Masters" on Youtube you are NOT as clear thinking as you can appear.
WHO SAYS HE IS EVEN DOING THE WOODEN DUMMY FORM?
He seems to be just playing around with the techniques to me. Find the video by 'clivepot' called 'Wong Shun Leung Dummy Form' and see how WSL does it there.
@mofotox If you've reached a high enough level, to spot a weakness within any of the the forms you've learnt, discuss it with your sifu. If it makes your wing chun more efficient then I would modify it to suit your own physical attributes and capabilities. Your wing chun is expression and reflection of your own personal training, just cos I study WSL lineage does not make me WSL!! Let go of your ego, and have the open mind to absorb what is most useful and incorporate into your own training! ;-)
Regardless of 'showing power' or not, he showed absolutely not ‘far du’ (method and structure) at all. He couldn’t even kick high. He my have been a good ‘fighter’, ( I wouldn’t know, I wasn’t there), but his form totally suck ass! Why his dummy form differ from others'? He had not been practicing for a long time so he forgot.
Also, he did not show here all of the form he knows. He kept his best moves a secret. The actual dummy as he taught it, does not end at the end of this video. There is more. I know because I learned it.
He is practicing here control, which increases muscle coordination, awakening control of fine nerves which improve everything, speed, power, etc. The snake moves slowly, except when it fights.
Also he is focusing on structural alignment.
Power does not have to be shown all the time to have it. Indeed, those who constantly must show power, in fact have very little. Those who have no need to show, are as Confucius said of Lao Tzu "like a dragon", immeasurable.

He could be just playing with the dummy trying to work a particular angle.
