  • Love the Reagan years, when Americans weren't afraid to display their military power.

  • You cannot change written history, even should you go back in time. To change history causes disruption in time / space continium. Worse should you go back, and see yourself, eye to eye, this would cause a paradox, where you cannot exist in two different time segments. You would cease to exist in both time planes .

  • How about a whole series of sequels where the Nimitz keeps popping up all through history, kicking butt and taking names. Oh, and they should work some midgets in there somehow, too. That'd be sweet.

  • @BrianPriestleyShow You serious?

No offense but It was just pictures of planes taking Off while some badly executed plot took place. It really did have potential but the Budget was just too Low for it to really pull anything off. If they really did change history and the audience at least SAW battleship row being saved by F-14s and such, it wouldve been Great. I really like This movies plot but sadly, the fact that it was a low budget 80s movie kinda ruined It.

  • @galloway62042009 Depends on what you mean by low budget as the set they used for the filming was worth 4.5 billion dollars. Most of the film was shot on the Nimitz with full cooperation from the Navy, many of the actual crew were used in the movie(few with speaking parts). It gave the Navy a chance to show off the Nimitz and what is can do. It had a decent budget, and made alot of money when released in Theaters.

  • @porpus99 Even though we never actually saw Pearl Harbor or anything in Pearl Harbor.

Nor any Carriers or anything at all really. Nothing actually happened when you think about it.

  • @galloway62042009 That was not what i was talking about, i was commenting on the fact you calling the Final Countdown a low budget movie, and how it was ruined because of that. As of now this movie has become something of a Cult Classic. As for nothing happening, it showed that time happened the way it was supposed to. Owens was left in the past, and became the wealthy man who invested in the construction of the Nimitz. If they remade the movie, maybe they can have a battle.

  • RIP James u will be missed putting up on my FB all the movie that I can share..

  • R.I.P. James Farentino

  • Something that occurred to me; Jap subs were known to be in the area, yet they showed no ASW patrols launched in the absence of escorts. How shitty would it have been to stumble upon a couple well placed WWII era torpedoes? Well, it's a movie...

  • @7EMERSON9

Very sharp comment, pal ! I'am glad a few people still use her/his mind in the new world. You said right, it is a movie, but you left out it is a american one !

  • Wikipedia says it was actually made on the USS Ranger. I rode the Ranger a year and half. During that time the Ranger was used for "Top Gun" (and the Ranger was Top Gun of the Pacific at the time, but dressed up to be the Enterprise), and the movie "Star Trek IV".

  • Such an excellent movie! I remember seeing it in the theater as a kid with my dad and we both loved it! He just got it on DVD and we watched it again and it's still an excellent ride! I think this is the only movie I've seen to take place onboard an aircraft carrier. Other movies have them but this one is set on a carrier! A very high concept film! Great trailer reel, thanks for the good memories!

  • SHIP + AIRPLANE + OCEAN + AIRSPACE = STRANGE FORCES IN THE UNIVERSE = GOOD 1970S SCI-FI MOVIE

  • I think the movie would have been better if they went back to 1805 so they could have fought in the battle of Trafalgar. Lollerskates.

  • @0871Atta They wouldnt have gotten involved with the battle of Trafalgar. That battle was between the British Royal Navy and the combined French Navy and Spanish Navy during the War of the Third Coalition. The United States was not even involved with that war, and the Nimitz crew would have stayed out of it because of that. If anything they would have kept there presence a secret from the other nations and advance the United States far beyond any other country could match at the time.

  • @porpus99 They would have had to join the battle -- how else would they stop the clone of zombie robot napoleon from defeating the brits with his doomsday cannonball?

  • @0871Atta that makes no sense. Are we talking history or syfy mumbo jumbo now?

  • I kinda wish they had attacked the Jap fleet. It'd would have been awesome to see F-14s, EA6B Prowlers, and the nimitz engaged in a massive naval battle.

  • I wish some one made a similar movie like this except instead of kicking the japs, they go back in time in sept. 9 2001 and "pacify" the 2 planes about to hit the WTC and then change history forever.

  • those Tomcats owned those A6M Zeros. and if that storm delayed itself, then they would have pwned that fleet. we need more movies like this: modern day stuff going to eras like WWII. like heat seeking missiles, radar lock missiles, and JETS.

  • We badly need more movies like this. How often do you get that distinct feeling of "badassness" like when 1940-s people stare at jet fighters? :-D

  • This movie would have been ten times better if they had went through with the attack and then were pulled back to their own time to discover huge changes in history.

  • We need an excellent remake full of CGI...

  • The Nimitz! Interesting movie!

  • I WANT THIS MOVIE IN BLU RAY AND REMAKE

  • I first saw this film as a kid when it came out, and I loved the concept of going back in time to change WW2, or even stop it from happening. I hear they're planning a remake of it, and if they do I hope they do it right. I still enjoy watching this film.

  • sadly impossible to market.

  • Crap...I was hoping this was a movie about nuking the band "Europe".

  • I want this to happen today! Let's go America invent time-travel and save the world!

  • This was the coolest military film ever made

  • Nimitz the Giant of the US navy..now..

  • great film its cool

  • I only got the region1 DVD on Christmas Eve. I’ve dad the region2 DVD for several years but the colour balance looks milked down at least its in scope 2.35:1 and Dolby Stereo 4.2.4 matrix as I heard it back in 1980 at the cinema in Dolby Stereo on a big Cinerama curved screen.

  • For those F-14 it would take them miles to turn around they can’t make fast turns like the Mitsubishi A6M2. Thou it does make for great viewing and listening fun in Dolby Stereo.

  • The region1 DVD in Dolby Stereo digital6channel sounds wicked in the re-mix. No 70mm prints where made for its release only 35mm. I’ll give it second running using the centre back and overhead matrix surround should be a bit more thrilling on the aerial flyby shots.

  • I also brought the regionFree bluray a few days ago should be afterburning on the JBL sound system in Dolby Stereo Digital TrueHD8channel in January 2011 stuff dtshda the film was never released in dts it was DOLBY® STEREO read the end credits!

  • @EmpireLS56KW haha yeah it's funny cuz A6Ms were trying to escape by going full throttle, but Tomcats had to slow down at the minimum flying speed xD..

  • What if the Nimitz task force attacked and at the last moment had to pull back due to the storm. History would be turned upside down! The Japanese would clam the United States attacked first! They might have also gotten hold of the device the nuclear-bomb and bombed the USA not once but 10 times and today the US would be education camps.

Its best not to mess with history it can lead to serious repercussions.

  • This is a weird espoide of two and a half men, which one is Alan, I see Charlie there but where is the other two

  • World War 2 would have lasted 15 minutes....with the missles tipped with Nuclear Weapons....game over

  • WW2 would've lasted a week if we had this military prowess...

  • I liked the film and also the ending but one thing annoys me is

that Nimitz is alone, if I remember correctly the doctrine says

that a carrier is never alone, where are the destroyers, the

Ticonderoga class missilecruiser and of course the nuclear

    submarine?

  • They should remake this movie. well maybe not remake it but just make one like it but with todays aircraft and ships going to ww2. Maybe not a ship but like send an Abrams tank where they really needed something like that in ww2

  • Really cool movie, and really cool ship, too. Though the Iowa class BB is much better looking than a CV. :)

  • This year is the 30th anniversary of The Final Countdown. You can see my write up on Lockergnome(dot)Com/jfk "The Final Countdown — A Memoir In Time Travel"

  • Way way way ahead of its time........I remember when this came out.I got goose bumps when the jolly rogers splashed the zeros.

  • I always loved this movie.

  • This should get a remake, with modern aircraft etc

  • @cheetahchampion You can say that again! 2010 seems to be the year for re-makes. Who knows?

  • @cheetahchampion A remake should include an entire Carrier Battle Group, with a modernized Battleship and all. And I want to see some F/A 22 Raptors.

  • @AmericanThunder Heck Yeah!

  • @AmericanThunder There are no modernized battleships. The US mothballed it's battleships in the early 90's.

  • @kaine977 Yes, I know, I remember when it happened. During the 1980s, the Iowa-class BBs went through major modernizations, to carry 63 nuclear cruise missiles with a range of 1500 miles, harpoon anti-ship missiles with a range of 58+ miles, Phalanx CIWS (the autonomous chain guns) and last but not least, 21 kiloton nuclear shells for the 16" mark 7 guns. That's plenty modernized for any ventures into WWII, wouldn't you say?

  • @AmericanThunder Those are what I like to call, "crowd pleasers".

  • @kaine977 Oh yeah

  • @AmericanThunder Are you sure that it's "F/A" ? anyway, the charm of the F14 is unreachable, just the most beautiful fighter ever designed. This film is very underated, very few people knows, nowadays, about it's existance. I doubt that they'll ever do a remake, but it will be awesome, id you ask me. Just my 2 cents.

  • @ComandanteJ I think it's only worth remaking with a different ending, where they do alter history. We already have the first movie, and it's great, so something new should be done if it's done again.

  • Yeah I couldn't believe it when I came across this movie on 'DVD! One of my all time favorites from when I was a kid. I'm just so thankful for the business that gave it the 'DVD treatment. The director's commintary kind of boring. The extra materials portion of the 'dvd are sadly sparce. I was just hoping for more more more behind the scenes kind of stuff. But it had been 20-years and the director struggled with remembering much beyond the scenes that made it to the final cut.

  • I was stationed in NAS Key West .... where they actually filmed most of this movie. It was cool seeing the zeros and f-14's both on the same flight line.

  • @alienaircrew I was there too. I got to work as an extra in the 1st scene. It was weird to see the NAS Pearl Harbor sign.

  • The U.S.S NIMITZ declaring war on the japanese empire? Awesome!!

  • Is that Orson Wells speaking at the beginning?

  • I love this movie about an American carrier going back in time!

I seem to vaguely remember a book which did the exact opposite: a Japanese WWII era carrier (history books lists it as sunk) sent decades forward in time after a major 2012 type catastrophe hits Earth.

  • If you ever remember the name of that book Please let me know!

  • The dialog that took place between 1:58 and 2:20 was not in the movie or any theatrical version that I'm aware of.

  • The Producer and Director of this movie blew it. This movie had tremendous creative possibilities. If done right, it could have led to a TV series. Instead, they limited it to a few 'static electricity' scenes with the Carrier, a dogfight and the capture and interrogation of a Jap pilot. Pretty sad but good for only a very little kick.

  • @onthemoney90 Potential like mega-blockbuster. This is a perfect remake opportunity. It's like a burrito; keep the basics and fill it with whatever else you want.

It needs a big budget, but still needs to be story/character driven.

The only problem is nowadays, people aren't quite as patriotic I think.

  • @RodCornholio Unappreciative prosperous people may not be as patriotic, while a person with nothing to his name, like Gustus Bozarth, who recently made the news, still is.

  • I was on the Nimitz from 1977 - 1981 and actually watched them make this movie! It was awesome to see! I see my friends in the movie each time I watch it. I was actually 10 feet behind Martin Sheen in some of the scenes. I will never forget watching the make this movie!

  • @Advertise2Thousands

and you didn't change the pearl harbor issue??????LOL

  • @Advertise2Thousands WOW cool awsome dude im in canada i love the film :)

  • @Advertise2Thousands WOW cool awsome dude im in canada i love the film :)

    the what if factor :)

  • @Advertise2Thousands did you talk to him at all? what was he like?

  • @Advertise2Thousands cool stuff

  • @Advertise2Thousands I was there from 1978-81 as well (E-2 DIV.); I too remember them filming onboard - really got an education on how long it actually takes to set a single scene up, practice, film, then break it all down again. On top of that, that particular scene may end up on the editing rom floor!

  • @Advertise2Thousands I too was onboard during this same timeframe (E-2 DIV); I really got an education on just how long it takes to set up for a scene, practice a couple of times, film that scene, then break it alldown again. On top of that, that particular scene, which might've taken half a day to complete, might only take up 10 seconds or so in the finished product, or end up on the editing room floor !

  • @Advertise2Thousands That is so awesome man. What was your job on the NIMITZ?

  • Comment removed

  • @Advertise2Thousands I was living in Princess Anne Plaza as a teen about 2 direct miles from NAS Oceana, falling asleep to the beautiful roar of some of the very planes on this carrier, haha. One of the best time travel movies ever made.

  • I was 10 when i first saw this.. Saw it at walmart and bought it, watched it 3 times already lol.

  • Crazy,..I was 8 when it first came out and thought it was cool as hell to think of the possibility to change what happened at Pearl Harbor. Been looking for it my damn self so now I know to go hit up Wallys for it.

  • i saw this at a drive in theater in jax florida, when i was 8 years old. i love this movie.

  • this movie has F14 therefore its good

  • lol, f-14s vs WW2 zeros, this was a great book, i wonder if i can find the movie anywhere

  • Hey linkxsc,

In case you have not found the DVD yet, it is available from BLUE UNDERGROUND DVD. They redid it and gave it the deluxe treatment. It's also now on Blu-Ray, too!

It's a 2-disc set with loads of extras like interviews with the pilots from the Nimitz's Jolly Rogers squadron, VF-84, that filmed the flight sequences. It's AMAZING! I've been a huge fan of this film since seeing it in theaters in '80 when I was 14. The revamped soundtrack is also available on CD. Good luck & enjoy!

  • actually the nite that I wrote that comment, I was at the mall with a girl and as we walked by the movie store, and saw the movie from over 200 ft away and zeroed in on it, the girl was like WTF? y r u flipping out?

    it was a lol fest

  • Where have I been???? I read the book---never realized they made it into a movie. I must see this. Thanks for posting.

  • Still my all time favorite movie. I was the Aviation Supply Officer on NIMITZ from 81 to 83. My best professional day was the day 2 F-14s out of VF-41 splashed two Libyan jets. We would play the theme from the movie during approaches on breakaways from underway replenishments.

  • классный фильм

  • Я согласен!

  • This movie takes me back in time. love it. thanks youtube.

  • I grew up on this movie, it's one of my favorites. I think it's one of the most under-rated time travel movies ever made.
