I recently read an article on various recording techniques started by the Beatles, at Abbey Road studios. One of them was close mic'ing the guitar amps. Which means it's very likely that The Shadows amps weren't close mic'd for those early recordings.
I love Gary's suggestion about using cotton to stabilize the tremolo arm. I have used the tiny Fender spring in the past with decent results, but wrapping cotton around the threaded part of the arm is both simple and brilliant. It really works!!
Very interesting discussion indeed, about the tremolo pook, i dont use plummer tape anymore, i just take a little piece of rubber from the guitar standard an put that into the hole. it works fine I think.
Thanks for posting this interesting discussion on the details of producing 'that sound'. I'm sure it will be of great value to Hank Marvin wannabes, like myself. Rolf brings up a good point about the ability to switch between 'vintage' and 'clean' echoes on the TVS3. I mostly use the 'vintage' position for early Shadows tunes.
As usual, I find your conversation interesting that spans both basal and vital areas.
By the way, I think Gary is on the right track in the spring feature Tremolo system. Simply provide stability to the arm.
I would also like to mention the ability to activate (Vintage) or disable (Clean) feature by pulling in echo / level knob which I think not appeared in the video. I use that feature from time to time.
I will mention your comment about the vintage knob to the boys and we may include it on video 3 which will be a practical demonstration of several tunes.
Very interesting.
