You've all missed the point about Hadjidakis. It's about entertainment! The name was not well known back in the 70's so it didn't matter about being anally correct. At this time Greek music was just making it's way onto mainstream television variety shows. The song was done cleverly, skillfully, joyfully while introducing people back then to the culture of the "New Australians" as they were called living in our community. You have to get it in correct context and perspective - it was the 70's!
Actually i don't care where it came from originally, I just love watching 3 class acts doing what they do so well. I love Danny's ability to appreciate music and culture from anywhere and Harry's gorgeous smile and laugh. I love that they all laugh so easily. I cracked up at the "Mama look a boo boo" refererence!
I know the Macedonian version, but I like the Greek version as well. It is realy a good song. I would like to hear it in turkish as well. Probably there is a albanian, Bulgarian and Serbian version as well. Conclusion. Who ever sang it first the turks sprad it :)
This song is of Turkish origin from the days of Ataturk. The Greeks took it, changed the words and spread it to the west (just like they did with the Turkish coffee and named it Greek coffee) Mareshal Tito told the Vardarians that this is their song. They believed him. Just like they believed his lie that their country's name is Macedonia. Macedonia is a region in Northern Greece. Just like this song is Turkish.
@MariaLaGauchita i wouldnt say "took", but the song is "tsifteteli tourkiko" which is = turkish dance. alot of the bands from the early 20th century were mixed, with both turks and greeks. to claim it was turkish or greek is nonsense. it is turko greek. fuck ataturk for his genocide against the greeks. fuck the vardaskans for being the trolls of the world, and fuck tito for his anti capitalist propoganda.

@jessyquedens Yes, you are right. One can not distinguish it from a real Greek' s accent. But then again, Kaye was famous for his abilitries in vocals.

Ah, lovely Mouskori, Old Istanbul where I had friends of Greek, Albanian and Armenian origin. Most beautiful city back than in contrast to what it is now. This song is a product of this multicultural past, unfortunately destroyed by politicans in 50's. The ships in the song scrapped, streets razed, ethnic groups gone with only traces left. I don't even visit Istanbul anymore, I get sick after seeing what survived what's more destroyed. Only those that have seen the old Istanbul knows.
he says "greek song" but the song's name is "tsifteteli tourkiko" ..so it is a turkish song and orginal name is "kalenin bedenleri" or "niksarin fidanları" .
ah this greeks, they are stolen every thing from the turks and says ; this is our :) hahahah
@actionman124: Greetings....i wholeheartedly agree with you my friend....Stelios Kazantzidis made a Greek version of this Turkish song in the 1950's."siko horepse koukli mou" became an instant hit and it is still played at Greek functions to day, long after Kazantzidis died. I am responding to you for the benefit of UnceBobTouchedMe and APMUMBP who is trying to turn this into a political argument. My Best Wishes
get up and dance my doll so I can watch you and enjoy you turkish tsifteteli (bellydance) ni na nai Opa (this is what we say when we get excited dancing or listening to music). we live only once in the false dounia (country/world)we must enjoy a bit (refrain Opa Ni Na Nai). I am Greek and I know dounia is also sang in Indian songs so deep down we have Eastern heritage as well look in Indo-Greek Kingdom
@APMUMBP And when Stelios Kazantzidis made it so popular in the mid to late fifties the Skopian singer that sang it for the first time was not even born....Grow up and stop killing yourself for an identity.
@helios180746 really? WHy dont you check that and get back to me. Cause you sound like an idiot. And they were not from skopje they were from gevgelija. Thats a little more south in Macedonia. Near egejska Macedonia. Dont worry about my identity I know who I m. My great great g/father was fighting the turks in solun for an independent Macedonian state. YES read again Solun. Take a look at a map.
@APMUMBP I, and millions of others call them Skopians because they flatly refuse to call them Macedonians.MACEDONIANS are Hellenes with names like Alexandros,Philipos, etc.NOT Drago and Boris. What a contrast...Gevgelija and Egejska (Slavic) in Makethonia (Greek). Alexandros' half sister's name was Thesaloniki NOT Solun and that is where the City got it's name from. Solun is just another name like Salonica in English.
@helios180746 Gee you could only get millions? That sucks. Cause we have billions that call us Macedonians!!! Let me ask you one thing if Macedonia was greek. Why is there not one map showing that Macedonia or solun were ever greek before 1913? Why when greece made its country in 18whatever they didnt free Macedonia?
@helios180746 Gee you could only get millions? That sucks. Cause we have billions that call us Macedonians!!! Let me ask you one thing if Macedonia was greek. Why is there not one map showing that Macedonia or solun were ever greek before 1913? Why when greece made its country in 18whatever they didnt free Macedonia?
@Ouzotime what? And I m the one thats ignorant. You base your life on putting other people down. And I m not even talking about people outside of your country.
@APMUMBP millions of goats perhaps call u macedonian...how the hell u come up with that figure..u seem uneducated perhaps your little sister is typing for u in the only internet cafe in the mountain u live on..is that your goats calling u again????
@APMUMBP So." Stani mome da zaigras" was performed by the Skopians, long, long after Stelios Kazantzidis performed it in the 50's. And if you wish to continue conversing with me show some respect. The last person who called me an idiot found himself flat on the floor....so don't call people that cannot reach you names!!!!!!
@helios180746 First thing I am glad you speak Macedonian very well. Second thing the song is not from Skopje. Respect? You want to talk about respect. You call my country Skopians which is a term n one but your country calls us. LOL. Give me a fucking break. Respect learn what it means then we can talk.
PS: Enough with the internet tough guys I am sick of them all.
Very goosebumpy!! And since I don't understand one of the postings that is mentioning the word "Macedonia"....well for those who don't know ,Macedonia is an area of northern Greece where Salonica is located. The 'other" place is called F.Y.R.O.M with it's capital Skopia. They haven't even heard of the word "skata"!
haha I'm afraid I've fallen in love with this song now. xD I was singing it at work the other day and got several people addicted to it as well. (^_^) LMAO Love Danny Kaye and that lady was gorgeous and a great talent.
I adored it! Just shows you music can cross all borders and when charismatic people like these three do it... works miracles. Beautiful!!!! Got goosebumps listening to it (guess its my Greek pride at work here too.)
I think we lost one of the greatest entertainers ever in Danny Kaye - so very very talented - in one of his last rare shows in the UK even royalty could not get tickets
I am smitten with their interpretation... It's pitty that there's a crack at 2:05...

@APMUMBP And when Stelios Kazantzidis made it so popular in the mid to late fifties the Skopian singer that sang it for the first time was not even born....Grow up and stop killing yourself for an identity.
helios180746 1 year ago
@helios180746 really? WHy dont you check that and get back to me. Cause you sound like an idiot. And they were not from skopje they were from gevgelija. Thats a little more south in Macedonia. Near egejska Macedonia. Dont worry about my identity I know who I m. My great great g/father was fighting the turks in solun for an independent Macedonian state. YES read again Solun. Take a look at a map.
APMUMBP 1 year ago
@APMUMBP I, and millions of others call them Skopians because they flatly refuse to call them Macedonians.MACEDONIANS are Hellenes with names like Alexandros,Philipos, etc.NOT Drago and Boris. What a contrast...Gevgelija and Egejska (Slavic) in Makethonia (Greek). Alexandros' half sister's name was Thesaloniki NOT Solun and that is where the City got it's name from. Solun is just another name like Salonica in English.
helios180746 1 year ago
@helios180746 Gee you could only get millions? That sucks. Cause we have billions that call us Macedonians!!! Let me ask you one thing if Macedonia was greek. Why is there not one map showing that Macedonia or solun were ever greek before 1913? Why when greece made its country in 18whatever they didnt free Macedonia?
I will be waiting.

@APMUMBP millions of goats perhaps call u macedonian...how the hell u come up with that figure..u seem uneducated perhaps your little sister is typing for u in the only internet cafe in the mountain u live on..is that your goats calling u again????
Ouzotime 1 year ago
@APMUMBP So." Stani mome da zaigras" was performed by the Skopians, long, long after Stelios Kazantzidis performed it in the 50's. And if you wish to continue conversing with me show some respect. The last person who called me an idiot found himself flat on the floor....so don't call people that cannot reach you names!!!!!!
helios180746 1 year ago
