  • In his book, regal said that goldberg just wouldn't come at him an didn't really know what to do in a match this long, as his previous matches has all be 1.00 min squashes

  • In El Paso dang I missed it o well lol

  • Damn, Regal actually made a Goldberg match interesting O_O

  • lol I didnt even know Regal was in WCW holy damn crap :D

  • The idea of a technical wrestler throwing a monster who is used to just destroying people off of his game makes perfect sense. Regal gave Goldberg something to overcome and Goldberg did so by showing an ability to adapt. Pretty much an ideal story, even for a relatively short match like this.

  • WCW > WWE

  • Two of my favourite wrestlers

  • Damn! william regal is so underatted

  • I really thought this was a great display of some wrestling ability from Goldberg

  • at 2:07 when Goldberg hits Regal's arm and there's the weird sound I was like "shit, he broke Regal's arm" : D

  • wwe should have more matches like this for the midcarders

  • Who cares about Regal... It's all about DA MAN!!! GOLDBERG GOLDBERG GOLDBERG!

  • Gotta love regal..

  • wow if regal wanted to go off script he might as well should of kicked out of the jackhammer

  • wcw was more real them wwe until they deside to end goldberg win streak

  • This is like playing a video game with all the reversals and made up scripts

  • The thing was Regal was willing to lose(or job)to Goldberg. He had a very different idea of how the match would go:

WCW wanted the usual squash match(as had been agreed to) and Regal wanted a more competitve fight.

Basically he got fired because he decided on his own to deviate from the script.

  • I've watched Goldberg since his first match(I was in High School back then). When I saw this match live I was impressed.Regal's experience showed in this match and gave Goldberg his first true test.Surprisingly, Goldberg was able to hang in there with Regal.I was pissed when PWI made Austin number 1 instead of Goldberg in 1998.He's the only wrestler in history to go undefeated in his rookie year and unify both major titles. Most people would agree that Goldberg would have destroyed Austin.

  • @81carlos Only because WCW booked him to look like he'd destroy Austin.

  • @81carlos are you for real? onli wrestler to go undefeated and unify both major titles? come on man that is easy to achieve wen it has already been decided out, ther is no competition for goldberg to overcome to achieve this as he was just giving it by the bosses

  • @wkaine88 Same thing can be said about Brock Lesnar when he was a rookie.Same thing happened when Hogan came back to WWF in 1984.He was given the belt for 4 YEARS.Besides that. Most wrestlers like Ric Flair,Hogan, and others who had creative control all agreed that Goldberg was The Man at this point in time and NOBODY in wrestling could mess with him! We all know it's a show. But remember,Brock Lesnar was a wrestler too and look what he ended up doing after he entered the UFC....

  • @81carlos exactly the same thing can be sed about them all, what they achieve in a predetermined strory line is not achieving anything in competition at all so the things that you are praising him for are things that was giving to him, the thing a pro wrestler can achieve is fans with his own charisma like the rock or stone cold and im sorry pal but goldberg isnt a scratch on ither 2 for their REAL achievements so i agree with the dicision to make austin no1 ahead of goldberg

  • @wkaine88 How so? Rock played College football.Goldberg played professional football for the Atlanta Falcons. The Rock became an actor full time.Goldberg made appearances in MMA shows like Strikeforce.Goldberg is known to practice kickboxing and has owned a kickboxing gym for the last 10 years(which is why he was so adept at kicking).I honestly would rather have Goldberg watching my back then the Rock.Even the Rock respected Goldberg enough to lose to him and pass him the torch.

  • @81carlos i thort we were talking about STAGED wrestling, not REAL fighting since his achievements in wrestling is all you mentioned in your 1st arguement to put him ahead of austin. of course in a real fighting situation i would hav goldberg with me over ither of rock or austin but bk to wrestling i would still put austin and rock ahead of bill

  • By Regal making him wrestle it made Goldberg look like he could wrestle (positive) at the same time it took him 6minutes to beat someone who realistically hadn't beaten anyone of not in years (negative)

Goldbergs gimmick was he crushes people not wrestle them.

Still a fine little match though

  • Regal has been over looked for so longas were many great talents in wcw cause bischoff & hogan are as clueless as sheep shit about running a wrestling company. Goldberg couldn't wrestle his way out a paper bag. There's a huge difference between being a poower house and being a good wrestler and goldberg was just a power house.

  • I've always liked this match.Nobody knows what Regals true motivates but himself, but this was an intriguing match between an experienced, well schooled vet and a powerful, but green rookie. There were some nice grappling exchanges and reversals and Goldberg came out looking like more than some really strong guy.

  • regal got fired because of this that idiot

  • This was one of the most "real" looking pro wrestling matches I've ever seen.

  • thats all the proof you need, Goldberg himself wouldnt let anyone make him look good haha. if he had worked a little more with regal, that could have been dynamite

  • At the beginning of the show, Macho Man came out and told Hulk Hogan and the NWO. That he was gonna kick Hogan's ass from El Paso, Texas all the way to Ciudad Juarez!

  • I was there that night at Don Haskins!

  • 0:59 "And this has to be among the stiffest tests yet, for Goldberg." So true. lol

  • regal was a vet ,goldberg was a rookie, would magic johnson sit on the bench for sam bowie? i dont think so

  • I like Regal and all but he was being an unprofessional jackass during this match, a large proportion of the WCW's income was made because of Goldberg a lot of people relied on the success of Goldberg for their jobs but Regal was too smashed on somas to care.

  • @StephenAlexWalker thats not unprofessional thats smart,he made goldberg actually wrestle.he wasn't gonna roll over n let goldberg squash him like some jobber,he made him work harder for the victory that he was gonna get anyway.besides nobody wants to see a squash match, thats just boring.he gave the fans an actual match n got fired for it,which goes to show that wcw didn't know what to do with wrestlers with real talent.

  • @MrSFblack He was supposed to let him squash him - that's his job and in a fixed sport it's stupid to try and prove you're the better man in ring when your opponent is relying on you to keep up your end of the show. Plenty of people liked Goldbergs squash matches he was one of if not the most over workers in WCW. Regal was in the position in the first place because the fans didn't care about him - how good a worker he was means nothing if he can't get over.

  • @StephenAlexWalker over worker??? oh c'mon, how is not even wrestling a real match over working?not everybody liked goldberg's squashing, even as a kid i would be disappointed at some matches he had cuz they shoulda been longer.instead they were quick n boring, which i find insulting as a viewer.if i watch wrestling i wanna see a MATCH,which is just what regal gave goldberg when he stiffed him into actually wrestling.firing him for that was dumb,he was gonna lose anyway so it didn't matter.

  • @StephenAlexWalker. Regal said that he kept giving Goldberg plenty of oppotunities to attack him but for what ever reason he would not, so Regal had to wrestle him to keep the match going. Goldberg also apolgised for his performance to Regal and Eric Bischoff had a go at Goldberg for not going out there and squashing Regal like he was supposed to. Years later Goldberg just decided to blame Regal for it. Besides 2 points, did this harm Goldberg's run? No. Who is still at the top today? Regal.

  • @juzt156 He decided to blame Regal for taking pride in the match and making Goldberg look like more than a one-dimensional wrestler? Goldberg should be thanking Regal.

  • And i'm not sure this was in el paso, i live here, i don't think nitro ever taped here, i only know of smackdown in '03 with the famous clip of steph mcmahon in that tiny skirt :)

  • Regal might have been working stiff but it it turned to make a pretty good match.

  • good match but owell for regal

  • I always liked watching Regal wrestle. He's a good technical wrestler.

  • Just to think, Regal had a pretty bad career after this match. I bet he regrets not going into WWF with his English snob gimmick the first time around.

  • @aspectra He had a better career in the WWF/E than he had in WCW at that time. WCW had forgotten him, wasted all the heat and momentum he had in the earli-to-mid 1990's and left him lanugishing in mid-card obscurity. His first run in the WWF/E as the "Real Man's Man" sucked but his second run as William Regal has seen him win pretty much everything except the WWE/World Title and he's been a constant on-screen personality for most of the 2000's.

  • yo goldberg is tha real life incredible hulk lol like foreal

  • Regal looked really sloppy here.

  • @thegoodemon

regal's not being sloppy. he's stiffing every shot. he was angry that he had to put over goldberg who just knocked through every challenge

since goldberg was a rookie, and regal was a veteran regal stiffed and sanbagged everything godldberg had. as a result, goldberg sold none of regal's moves

  • john cena could choke out goldberg with the five knuckle shuffle

  • If anything goldberg made regal look bad by no selling EVERYTHING - i know at the time he was an untouchable monster - but come on... at 1:30 Regal kicks him in the back with authority and goldberg stands up and grunts at him... Regal wrestles him and exposes goldberg for having no actual wrestling skills

  • that was one stiff match.

  • how many wins was it until Goldberg lost? i know it was ridiculously high

  • @AntiChristTeenager It was 173-0 before he lost his first match, with interference for"big sexy" (big scratchy is more like it-lice) by his partner Scott Hall

  • @AntiChristTeenager It was 173-0 before he lost his first match, with "interference" for"big sexy" (big scratchy is more like it-lice) by his partner Scott Hall

  • @alexp8654 you gave a horrible possible reason for them to possibly be mad.

  • In some ways it was like what Bob Holly was doing to Brock Lesnar on WWE Smackdown. Regal still did the job but he proved a point to Goldberg u still gotta pay ur dues

  • @cmhero85 Looked like Goldberg paid them in GOLD!

  • 2:28 that's the only good thing about Goldberg and his lame ass moveset.

  • Goldberg looked weak compared to his typical lame ass squash. Regal showed him real wrestling skills.

  • @HEATofEAST92 C'MON, PEOPLE! it was a SHOW! Like those "european uppercuts" REALLY HURT Goldberg, or ANYONE ELSE, EVER for that matter! IF it WAS A shoot, then Goldberg STILL KICKED HIS MUCH MORE EXPERIENCED ASS, if it was a WORK, it was only a SHOW, NOTHING MORE. TAKE YOUR PICK!

  • The people who say this made goldberg look bad their wrong. It showed his abilities of wrestling other than power. This match looked like a real proper wrestling match. I like how at the end goldbergs like f*ck it! *spears regal* haha

  • Serves you right Jabroni! Regal shooted on your piss poor wrestling skills. ahahah GillBerg!

  • @StanKingston420 WHO WON??

  • bobby the brain....''goldbergs got attitude,he's a monster, got everything going for him really'' HAHAHAHA

  • i think this a great match for the length it was beacause it feels and looks real. granted the crowd arent fully behind it so it comes off as dull to some but i personally i like it.

  • @acturek As I said before, IT'S A SHOW! IF it was a SHOOT, then Goldberg STILL KICKED REGAL'S LIMEY ASS. If it was a WORK, then it was simply a planned show! NOTHING MORE! NOTHING LESS! GET OVER IT, GOLDBERG HATERS! HIS FOOTBALL TEAMS MUST HAVE BEATEN YOUR PISS POOR TEAMS for you to be SO MAD at Goldberg! SOUR GRAPES!

  • good effort by regel,,

  • This is an actual wrestling match so he looks real good as a wrestler the perfect blend of technical and power, progression was slow and choppy but that was because goldberg was a rookie. all in all it was a good match.

  • And again ist jachHAMMER not jackKNIFE.

Those commentators should get that straight.

  • Quick count or what ?

  • good for Regal.. made him look bad and when for a great ride in WWe

  • I agree with the other commenters. Where does Goldberg look bad in this match? I actually think he looks pretty good.

  • How exactly did goldberg look bad.He looked impressive to me.

  • why is his 30-0 match dated as being 2000 and this one 1998? Also there's a Norman Smiley match listed as 32-0, and the announcers even refer to that WL record too

  • @corrosivecabal Because of negros.

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah i dont see how goldberg looked bad. That first take down he had at 2:29 was amazing especially for someone of that size. The only botch i saw was that weird shoulder block. I think he was going for the spear and missed. Regal did his part. If he got fired for this then shame on wcw. But regal ended up being one of wwf/e better heels anyway. So i guess it all worked out for him.

  • @hellohell77 The botch you speak of wasn't a botch regal put the breaks on; on purpose he was supposed to let Goldberg spear him at that point.

  • I remember being here when I was a kid. My pops saved up so much money to get us tickets to see it. Damn, this is what wrestling was all about, and this brings back so much memories. I'll never forget hearing Goldberg's music when I was a kid, shit was intense. :)

  • first time this pyro was used for goldberg. He used a different pyro once 2 weeks before this........and why does regal look so fat?

  • @Nwildchild

Probabl because Regal eats too much and drinks too much beer.

  • regal is looking pretty flabby there - not that i would have said that to his face haha

  • Regal = fat asshole jealous of Goldberg.

  • This was NOT what the crowd wanted to see, listen to how quiet they are. Regal didn't sell any of Goldbergs moves, blew spots on pupose and stiffed and sandbagged Goldberg making him look like shit. Regal could've asked if they could have a competitive match beforehand instead of pulling this unprofessional shit. The booking was that Goldberg goes over everyone in dominant fashion and the crowd eats it up, not boring curtain jerker gives Goldberg a competitive brawl. Regal deserved to be fired!

  • deserved to be fired because he refused to be a jobber? i guess that IS how the business works,,,but regal is no damien demento...

  • @pa20002000 Personally I really enjoyed Regals ring work around this time 97/98 but he was barely mid-carder status and hadn't been on TV in months before this match. He was chosen to go out there and put Goldberg over, he could've refused to go out there at all (and get fired) or argued that they should have a competitive match and accepted the decision the bookers made, he was unprofessional and went out there and stiffed and sandbagged Goldberg the whole match. He deserved to be fired.

  • @CaptainHowdy187 MEBBE -DO YOU THINK HE EXPECTED TO BE FIRED? i RECKON HE MUST HAVE KNOWN THIS WAS NOT GOING TOGO DOWN OK..

  • @pa20002000 Maybe Bischoff or someone else high up in the company were onto his massive drug problems at the time and he knew his days were numbered so didn't care about going into business for himself in this match.

  • @CaptainHowdy187 I guess a bit of a "swan song" for regal...I think i would have done the same if i was in regal's shoes...unprofessional or not.

  • @pa20002000 Didn't Regal look a bit "Limey" to you?

  • @alexp8654 lard and lime don't mix....

  • this was suppose to be a squash match which regal cause a lot of controversy cuz he was no selling moves

  • Comment removed

  • @Qwertzslayer LEARN FUCKING ENGLISH

  • respect to regal to making this as interesting as possible

  • For one thing, Regal dead-weights him on the back suplex at 5:00.

I would guess the problem was, Regal, without the agent's approval, decided on a longer, competitive match. Goldberg, still in his first year, decided to go along with Regal. I don't think it was a matter of Regal being unprofessional with Goldberg. If Regal stiffed him, Goldberg could've handled his own and stiffed him back. Goldberg did not look frustrated or angry in this match at Regal, just confused at what Regal was doing.

  • Look @ around 5:10. As Goldberg whips Regal, I think that was suppose to be the spear off the irish whip. AND I think that's why Regal was fired, for not finishing the match whe it was suppose to happen. Great match though... GOLDBERG IS THE MAN!!!!!!!!!

  • @SuperSonicHot Yeah I think your right about that, at least that's what it looks like to me too.

  • This really made both wrestlers look good and it made Goldberg more convincing and not just a two move wrestler.

  • Regal sure can work

  • haha i was there :D

  • He Can't wrestle but he handled himself well against an accomplished all world grappler. If anybody in WCW could have beaten Regal in a "Shoot" it would have been Goldberg or Meng.

  • A lot of people talk bad about this match, like Regal made Goldberg look really terrible. I'm not seeing it. This was a good match. And Goldberg didn't look bad. If anything, it made him look better because he's doing something besides effortlessly smearing some other guy across the mat, and still comes out winning. He even had some good reversals, and Regal is a damned good technical wrestler.

  • @Elusareth Agreed. Whether or not Goldberg knew the match was going to go like this, he actually handles himself fantastically. Regal really is one of the best technical wrestlers there is, and for Goldberg to hold his own here showed that despite what some people say, Goldberg can actually wrestle.

Have to say, this was one of WCW's best matches, if only because it looked set up to be a squash at first.

  • @Elusareth AGREED! I think they had one match canceled before the start of the show, so they used this one to drag out some of the time.

  • @Elusareth This is not the match you're being told about. The match so many of us refer to was Goldberg initial match when he first started, Regal beat him like a rented mule on a Saturday night taping, and then laid down... where I have heard he was fired on the spot for kicking his ass so bad.

  • @Elusareth regal is one of the best wrestlers of all time ...goldberg wasn't gonna walk through em

  • @Elusareth well said. AND LOL@ WILLIAM REGALS MUSIC :D

  • @Elusareth He made Goldberg look like gold, no pun intended.

  • @Elusareth

I agree man. This match was the first one I've seen where Goldberg actually looked like a wrestler instead of just a tank who barrels over every opponent.

  • I liked this match

  • i remember this. regal was VERY stiff with goldberg that night. didnt he get fired or fined for this?

  • gold berg was trash just a body a body isnt wut wrestling is about and this is the problem with society no the wrestling company we want big guys who destroy thats not wut wrestling is about dumb fuking people in this world

  • @bizzybez problem with wrestling now is people want one thing when theres too many diffrent things in Wrestling....they want it THERE way instead of just watching the damn show

  • Goldberg had it in his contract where matches did not go beyond 2 minutes. Also, he was suppose to squash all of his opponents. He never sold for anyone and regal was shooting on him which pissed him off. he was totally lost in this match.

  • When you think about it, Regal was smart here. He put himself over as being a tough test because he was more established than many of the midcarders Goldberg had squashed up to this point, yet still made Goldberg look strong during many points of the match. Too bad Regal got canned because of it because I think it actually put Goldberg over stronger as opposed to a 1 minute squash

  • @BrandonTheBeast83 I agree. I thought that both men wrestled exceptionally.

  • @BrandonTheBeast83 Well if he got canned because of it, then it wasn't very smart, was it?

  • Fascinating match to watch knowing that Regal is shooting.

  • How much weight did Regal carry back then?I know he had drug issues though at the time.Yea it did seem that Regal was trying to shoot on Goldberg when you watch this,Goldberg looked a little confused aswell as if to say this wtf?

  • yeah regal got a bollocking for working too stiff goldberg didnt know this was gonna happen it was meant to be a squash

  • Yeah I remember, it wasnt too long after this match Regal ended up in WWE for a short time, he got fired the day after this match

  • @BassFace2008 he's a man lol good times

  • Regal was shooting on Goldberg to haze him by showing him up

  • Regal looks sluggish in this match. I honestly dont think he is completely sober here.

  • this is shockin! like they dont know what theyre doin!

  • william regal? haha i forgot he was in the wcw xD

  • I like this match because it's a good example of the fact that amateur wrestling ISN'T as useless as people think in terms of actual fighting.

I mean, just look at the fact that Goldberg is so much younger and stronger than Regal, and yet there are a few occasions (3:36, 4:47, 5:22) in this match where Regal legitimately takes Goldberg down using leverage and mat skills alone. And yes, Regal was 'shooting' to an extent, even though Goldberg will debate this to the death. XD

  • The only legitimate take down Regal had was the judo throw at 3:35 which can be done fairly easily, especially to people who are not trying to fight it. But stuff like 5:22 Goldberg was cooperating.

  • I have to strongly disagree with you on 5:22 - I have a hard time believing that fall was deliberate on the part of Goldberg. Wrestlers aren't taught to land on their arms.

  • @Suckfest83

I honestly think Regal was shooting on him cuz of heat, i honestly think he did it to try to make Goldberg a lil better and bring him to skool, alot of vets do dat

  • goldbergs the best wrestler

  • regal showed in this match, that goldberg is not a good wrestler, after that match he got fired from wcw because of that..

  • I could have kicked out of the jackhammer haha. well maybe not me... but regal could have....

  • I think Regal was great here. He put over Goldberg stronger than what a 2 minute squash would of, while also portraying he was a serious threat

  • anyone notice alot of goldberg's early matches have him totally botch the jackhammer? like with totally no delay its pretty much a turning suplex

  • He does that with the heavier opponents like Big Show.

  • it wasnt that goldberg botched the jackhammer. if you watch regal no sells the entire match. the second goldberg lifted him up, regal swung his legs backwards to avoid putting over goldberg and making him look powerful

  • The only problems Regal had was that he tried 2 go 4 the single leg takedown but he couldn't get Goldberg off his balance. Regal tried 2 wrestle Goldberg 2 the mat but Goldberg countered Regal's moves which the announcers stated that Regal looks perplexed. Regal was gonna lose regardless cause WCW was pushin' Goldberg as a steamroller but it was a good test match since it went 5 minutes Nstead of the usual 1 minute.

  • William Regal lässt sich nicht von Goldberg dirigieren - darauf wurde er auch von der WCW gefeuert.

  • The more experienced wrestler should always be the one to direct the match if hes with a rookie. Regal did an aweful job in this match although he did have personal problems at the time.

  • i remember this match, man am i fucking old

  • I remember when WCW came my hometown El Paso at the Don Haskin center. And of course this is were former Raw and Smackdown GM Vickie Guerrero and Chavo Guerrero lives here.

  • Goldberg quit wwe. Because him and Vince did not see eye to eye.

  • and because of goldberg wasn´t a good wrestler.

  • The idea that Regal got fired because he fooled Goldberg with wrestling is horseshit. It's obvious Goldberg stayed RIGHT with Regal the whole time.

  • Fail. Regal tried to wrestle but Goldberg couldn't. That made him look bad and they fired Regal. Wrong decision.

  • You watching the same match I am? Goldberg was matching Regal with moves. Regal also wasn't fired for about three more months after this, and he had drug and weight issues at this point.

  • Goldberg actually can wrestle pretty good when he wants, he's not like Cena and Hogan, although he did rely on a small arsenal of moves usually...as for Regal being done 3 months afterwards, I didn't know that, I always thought he got his notice as soon as he went backstage

  • Goldberg wasn't matching him. Regal was countering his own moves for Goldberg. Regal had been told to do this, to make it look like Goldberg could actually wrestle, but apparently no-one had told Goldberg. It may look like Regal is shooting at times, because he legitimately has to take Goldberg down, as 'berg has no clue what to do.

Regal got blamed for this and was eventually fired, although I agree with you that the drug issues must have played a large part.

  • @DaveMcAllister how you know that?

  • @WillJPalmer

Because it's the internet and everyone likes to think they're an expert. I'm less worried about stupid details and more interested in having fun. Watching Goldberg is fun.

  • @Mahbu yee too right he was

  • @JohnACorp782 it actully made Goldberg look good imo lol

  • @JohnACorp782 Regal was kinda outa shape in this period of his career.

  • @wwekane2468 True, but he still could wrestle.

  • @JohnACorp782 just the truth!

  • Once again I will say...I wish the WWE would have know what to do with Goldberg. The guy was the complete package. As opposed to 4 moves we get from Batista per match Goldberg could actually wrestle.

  • FOUR?! That's about three more than Batista REALLY knows.

  • It doesn't matter if you don't like someone like Goldberg getting a push instead of you. You go out there and get squashed. No I'm not a Goldberg fan, I just don't like Regal at all. Pretty funny though, Regal gets fired and almost ends up o.d.'ing and Goldberg is at the top of the wrestling world alongside Austin, Rock and so on.

  • That's true Xkerry, pro wrestling is a performance, I mean if you're on Broadway doing Cats, you don't go out dressed as a dog! You gotta keep the show moving as a team, but it certainly makes for interesting viewing when wrestlers do things like this, especially for the entire match! Maybe it was the only way Regal could get his voice heard in WCW, we all know now what things were like backstage if you weren't one of the big stars

  • Ha ha Regal stiffed the snot out of Goldberg, then got his ass sacked!

  • wow I see that 0_0

  • Regal shoots for most of this match (goes against the 'script') because he didn't like seeing Goldberg get a massive push. You can see it on Goldberg and the ref's face that something's not right! Anyway Regal was fired from WCW immediately after this match :D

  • And darnit, it was the best thing that ever happened seriously to Regal.

  • Definitely, Regal has some mad mic skills aswell as being a hell of a wrestler, maybe a little underrated actually
