In an interview with Martin Scorsese,he stated that Travis (De'Niro) actually did all of this,it wasn't a hallucination or dream as some think,Travis did attempt to kill Palentine and then succeeded in killing the three men in the apartment complex.He later recovered and went back to driving his cab,and in the end scene he has a look that Scorsese said was showing that Travis wasn't a hero,it was just a matter of time before he did something like this again and then he may be in the wrong.
