I got to work with Pine last August when he came through town. What an afternoon and night.
Regular guy---no ego, just plays, sings and visits. It was like I was talking to my grandfather. Cotton, Willie Big Eyes and Stroger waited until the last 30 minutes of the concert to bring him out 'cause of his age. He came out and knocked the crowd off its feet. Amazing talent and sweetest guy in the world.
RIP Pinetop...it's time for the Late DiscJockey E. Rodney Jones the "Bluesologist" to speak about Heaven's Grocery...just put the info below in the youtube search...enjoy
E. Rodney Jones at Church Service-Heaven's Grocery Store(Rare)
Was lucky enough see him live at the Double Door in Charlotte probably 12 years ago. He needed help to the stage but killed when he played. He drank a Heineken. RIP Pinetop.
Hey guys be sure to buy Pinetop Perkins new album called, Joined At The Hip: Pinetop Perkins & Willie "Big Eyes" Smith. I bought it in June when it first came out and love it!
Now, in 2010 he turns 97, and will be in Minneapolis where he will be appearing at a free Blues festival, during which many people will be celebrating his birthday . Amazing!
now this man has got real soul in his blood. It's as if he and his close buddy, Willie Big Eyes Smith, have been put on this earth to stand the test of time.
The first time I ever walked into antones was pinetops 96th birthday, out of nowhere james cotton showed up and the memories of that show still give me chills.
God bless you Pinetop. I was just turned onto your music yesterday by the guy that cuts my hair. I told him that i would check youout on you tube and I am now a fan! I can only hope that I have half the energy you have at your age.
Oh my sweet pal, how I wish you peace and comfort as time goes on. I fondly think of you and our good party days and quiet times in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Rest Easy, my friend!
I'm going to see Pinetop play live in Tampa, FL in an hour. It's awesome to see someone my grandmother's age keeping on, staying well, and still playing the hell out of the piano.
America has much to be humble about - a history of slavery and discrimination, an intellectually crippled president, imperialistic hubris, etc. We are fortunate to have a few citizens who are admired the world over. Pinetop is such an American. May he live forever.
