"Reaching for perfection" this might be a reference to the record that the red baron held, taking down about 8 enemy aircrafts before dieing, where the usual at that time was nothing more than 4 or 5.

This might be a reference to the english fighters, as most of them at the time would possibetly be christian and proclaiming to fight with god on their side.

I love this song so much! It came to me the other day suddenly that it must be about the Red Baron (something most people seem to agree on!); after their anti-fascist Crystal Night (a sort of reference Kristallnacht - Night of the Broken Glass) it didn't surprise me at another WWII song. It makes it more thrilling thinking about it being a real person in those dogfights, and it makes it more poignant, especially the last line: "Is it our destiny, killing our brothers?".

all this could inticate the fights he had on the battlefield. these "Shar dressed fools" could be the english or french or who he was fighting.

technically in being air war in general. it IS about the baron more or less, he was the first top scoring ace of his time. air combat pretty much evovled the way it did,becuase of him. and another little intresting fact. he didnt always have an airplane,but it was probably hard to go from horse to plane.yet with no formal training he was the best at what he did.
