Sharkfinning is a very cruel action. How about skilling the whole shark first and then cut their fins, would it be less cruel? Humans are omnivores. If we say killing sharks is a cruel action, then human should not even killing cows, pigs or chickens for food; because killing animals are cruel actions. I am not encouraging people to eat anything here.
It is not logical to me that the fact that killing shark, a protected species, is wrong; whereas killing cows, pigs and chickens, which are not protected animals would be perfectly OK and socially accepted. The different here is that cows, pigs and chickens are the norm food supply chain from your cultures/backgrounds and sharks/shark fin are not a norm food from your cultures/backgrounds.
People from different background have different food chains; some have more variety of food choice, some chose to eat only a few kinds. To further the discussion: Plants/ vegetables/corns are living things too, why should we cut its "hands or legs" or even its life to serve humans tummy?
In the end, human should not be eating or breathing. There are also bacteria and viruses which are living species in the air that we might be killing during the respiratory process. We all are predators on this planet to survive.

For the people getting all high and mighty about it being the Asians... yes it is massive in Chinese culture, but a large majority of shark fins come from EUROPEAN fishing fleets, while there are many 5-star restaurants across the US and Europe serving this as a delicacy. There is one scene in the movie where a guy is talking about the "magical" properties sharks have and that shark fins will help protect against cancer. How uneduacted is that? Shark fins are simply cartilage, which is comprised of protein. You would be better off eating an egg, since they are the only known perfect protein possessing all essential amino acids.

I'm so tired of the old saw - this food is traditional. My people claimed that cows, pigs and chickens were traditional diet choices. I went vegan and my family is the healthier for it. I believe that mankind can still evolve.

The United States just declared it ILLEGAL to bring sharks from the Atlantic and or the Gulf of Mexico into port without them being whole and intact. NO MORE SHARK FINNING off the coast of the United States!
Shark species are declining at such a rapid pace that by the time grandchildren are grown, sharks will be viewed only in zoos. We have to stop the long line fishing that kills huge numbers of innocent hungry sharks. We need laws that allow only whole sharks be brought to ports, not just fins. Instead of thousands of fins being piled onto a boat deck, whole sharks take up more space. This will save millions of sharks a year. Universal licensing like the crab and salmon quota's would help most.

Wild animals, and in particular sharks, are subject to very little population control from humans ie. we are very capable of taking from the ocean but how many sharks do you think we have contributed through breeding programs etc. Many shark species will become extinct if this practice continues. Sharkfinning is a very cruel action. How about skilling the whole shark first and then cut their fins, would it be less cruel? Humans are omnivores. If we say killing sharks is a cruel action, then human should not even killing cows, pigs or chickens for food; because killing animals are cruel actions. It is not logical to me that the fact that killing shark, a protected species, is wrong; whereas killing cows, pigs and chickens, which are not protected animals would be perfectly OK and socially accepted. The different here is that cows, pigs and chickens are the norm food supply chain from your cultures/backgrounds and sharks/shark fin are not a norm food from your cultures/backgrounds.

& If you really wish to stop/minimize such cruel activities of sharksfinning.You may consider going to the local ROM office (Registry of Marriage) giving out phamplets/flyers to the chinese bride/groom-to-be educating/advising them not to serve shark's fin soup on their official wedding day (nowadays I also refrain from eating it)

For the people getting all high and mighty about it being the Asians... yes it is massive in Chinese culture, but a large majority of shark fins come from EUROPEAN fishing fleets, while there are many 5-star restaurants across the US and Europe serving this as a delicacy. Hawaii is the ONLY US state that has a ban on shark products. It's not about pointing fingers it's about solving the problem.

I'm not racist, no. And I don't believe that this video portrays Asians as the culprits entirely. I live in the UK and because we are with the EU it is not illegal for our fishermen to do the same work. I understand a dish that has been around a long time being a part of a culture, but I don't understand why there can't be regulations and a specific programme to stop us from wiping these creatures out. The dodo is a great example - men land on island, find bird tasty, bird becomes extinct.

I don't have to be an internationally-renowned biologist to tell you this, I'm a student studying this in my biology class, and the stuff they print in textbooks and research papers on the matter certainly isn't crap. Besides, it's common sense. Sharks eat fish, fish eat plankton, krill and shrimps. Sharks gone, too many fish, too many fish eat too much plankton. Too much plankton being eaten will eventually result in no more plankton.

There is one scene in the movie where a guy is talking about the "magical" properties sharks have and that shark fins will help protect against cancer. How uneduacted is that? Shark fins are simply cartilage, which is comprised of protein. You would be better off eating an egg, since they are the only known perfect protein possessing all essential amino acids.
This movie needs to be released in China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Singapore, and Taiwan.

Tthe tuna & slamon industries are drying up because of overfishing as well. The difference is sharks don't reproduce at the same rate as other sea dwelling creatures. Becuz they're apex predators nature has purposefully made it so they don't over-reproduce. Unfortunately Humankind hasn't paid any attention to that. It takes on average 1 shark 9 yrs of maturity to be able to give birth to 2-12 pups/eggs, every OTHER year. Can you see the problem with that equasion & the overfishing going on?

I hate how people are anti-abortion and, say, pro-death penalty. Obviously to those idiots, a foetus has more human rights than a living, breathing person (irregardless of what they've done in life).
The Pro-Life attitude seems to me to be, "protect the unborn but once they are born, fuck em';" as soon as you have personal responsibility, these idiot pro-lifers don't give a fuck.

First, that relies on your assumption that there IS a God. We are part of a system that CANNOT function at current excesses. Yes, we need protein to live, but Shark Fin? Decidedly NOT. In fact the high levels of Mercury found in Shark fin poisons whoever eats it. It's a pure status symbol and highly wasteful. Chop off fins, throw the rest away. Sharks are endangered and as apex predator s are a vital part of the ocean's ecosystem. Seriously though, play the God card again...

I'm so tired of the old saw - this food is traditional. My people claimed that cows, pigs and chickens were traditional diet choices. I went vegan and my family is the healthier for it. I believe that mankind can still evolve.

The United States just declared it ILLEGAL to bring sharks from the Atlantic and or the Gulf of Mexico into port without them being whole and intact. NO MORE SHARK FINNING off the coast of the United States!

Shark species are declining at such a rapid pace that by the time grandchildren are grown, sharks will be viewed only in zoos. We have to stop the long line fishing that kills huge numbers of innocent hungry sharks. We need laws that allow only whole sharks be brought to ports, not just fins. Instead of thousands of fins being piled onto a boat deck, whole sharks take up more space. This will save millions of sharks a year. Universal licensing like the crab and salmon quota's would help most.

Shark Fin Soup is a delicacy and we have to respect that and respect other cultures but the way the sharks are caught and their fins taken while they're alive before they get chucked back in the water is an absolute disgrace and a disgusting practice. The shark dies a painful and relatively slow death and, although they may be eaten by other sea creatures is still a waste. The sharks should not be tortured and the rest of the shark should be used as well and if this is to continue...

Western people seem not to understand that we "farm" cows, pigs, sheep, chickens etc... asians CATCH their seafood from the open sea. The animals have a much better life than any of the "farmed" meat that we eat. Do you know where the meat you eat comes from? You tell me whats better? Wrong buddy. Wild animals, and in particular sharks, are subject to very little population control from humans ie. we are very capable of taking from the ocean but how many sharks do you think we have contributed through breeding programs etc. Many shark species will become extinct if this practice continues. Besides, live finning is undoubtedly cruel when compared to ANY farm processing procedures.

What farmer in their right mind would purposely mutilate their animals before sale, as PETA claims occurs in poultry farms through "covert cameras". Its a joke. I think that this video is racist towards Asians. Shark Fins Soup is a Asian delicacy. Its not like we eat sharks fin soup on a daily basis. And I believe other non-asians also have their own delicacy which might not be liked by other people. For example, americans eat buffalo meat which is not something that Asians often eat.
This is just my opinion so I hope that people would understand.
