Alright dude, if you post this vid, you like jazz, if you know jazz, then you'd know this famous song was written by Raskin and Mercer, and this is one of those standards they make you learn in school, by heart, through each and every tone, if you wanna learn how to play the thing propperly, just like Abe does, it is a beautiful song indeed, almost a poem, about a guy who finds the woman of his dreams, but unfortunately, she's only a dream, and that girl gives her name to the song, LAURA
I love Abe's playing. He is a force and has been a powerhouse here in the studios of Los Angeles for years. He is a master of his instrument and brings his creativity and talent as does other players who we all can admire and emulate. I met him once and his advice to me was "stay happy!"

@piquefamily You are right my friend. I didn't intend for it to go this far, but I felt that it's a little unfair to say Jaco will mop the floor with Abe. I have a huge and healthy respect for the genius of Jaco, and he's paid his dues to the world of music, and to bassists for that matter. But I guess they are different in style, but have one common bond - they have made greatl music by pushing and re-defining the boundaries of the role of the bass. I'm proud to be a member of the bottom end!
@ULIGH: this is from an old VHS that Abe did, think it's called 'new bass concepts'. I've got it somewhere! So glad someone's taken the time to convert and upload some of it. I think the name of this piece is 'Laura', but don't quote me on that.
There's a bass and flute duet (feat. Justo Almario) on the same video which is worth looking out for too.
His son is virtually the best drummer around these days. There aren't many drummers in the No.1 spot, but he few that are all stand together in row. Abe, Jr. is fanatical on the skins.
@dave110499 How famous is he?GOOGLE..I've loved Abe since the 80's.He has his own distinctive style. That's what attracted me about Marcus Miller..I heard "Funking For Jamaica" and cried out "Halleluja The Funk Has Arrived!"
Abe Laboriel was born in Mexico City, 1947. Originally a classically trained guitarist, he switched to bass guitar while studying at the Berklee School of Music.
Abe is the greatest bass player of all times. I have seen him live in concert with Koinonia over twenty years ago and it was just awesome. he is a musical genius.
Really, you're bringing religion and the "Lord" giving people talent into this? I hope you know you are delusional and that those things have nothing to do with that religious crap.
@durpadoo It's a fine line, indeed. Have you given it much thought?
His parents gave an opportunity for life, but could they be certain he'd be born with all his fingers, with a great mind?
Abe worked *hard* to become a fine bassist; no one is doubts that, either.
But the *person* that Abraham has become ... it's very difficult to attribute the sum total of all the parts of the man's life to random chance. Abe doesn't ... he'd flat out *tell* you that he gives glory to God. So, go figure.
@miiiiiiikatos I just saw Abe last night at a very small jazz club in los angeles and needless to say, he's hands down the best bass player I have seen or heard live. This is coming from a drummer of over 25 years.
@indiedrmr You're fortunate mate. I live so far away I don't know if I'll ever have the opportunity to see, speak, or listen to him. What can you say of his tone and choice of instrument. Do you know anything about his rig?
@vavaseur Victor wooten is all tricks? You retarded or something? Learn any one of his pieces and I doubt you'll be posting any more of this crap about him again. Next youll be saying Marcus Miller cant play bass!
People who post insulting comments are the retards. I did say that they are amazing players, but Laboriel is an amazing musician. BTW, brush up on your grammar Chris. You'll and Can't are spelt with apostrophes.
@yeebeascurvydawg If Jaco were alive, he'd recognize and give due credit to Abe's talent. Abe can do anything with his fingers. I dare you to show me any bass player who has mastered flamenco on BASS! I tell you if Jaco were alive he would cringe with humility!
You seem to be one of those people who are impressed by technique and base your appraisal of a musician on that. Fine, that's your opinion, I'm not going to argue with you because that's just stupid. I will say however, that mastering flamenco on the bass, while impressive, is not a feat that requires any degree of creativity, just a lot of hard work.
@yeebeascurvydawg You make a weak point when you describe me as someone impressed by technique and as a result bass my appraisal of a musician on that. If you'll be true to yourself, Abe is more than just a technician. He bring a soul and emotions to his music. Just ask any one who has experienced his music. I write in response to your lame and shallow comment that suggested that Jaco would mop the floor with Abe anyday or anytime. Abe Laboriel is a true musician in every sense of the word.
@yeebeascurvydawg We're talking of a person whose musicianship spans not only a vast range of musical genres - from classical to hip hop, but also time - 3 decades. Now, it takes a very special musician to stay at the top that long. Please do your homework well. You call mastering flamenco 'just a lot of hard work', well, show me many 'hard working' bass players who have had the discipline to add to their tonal palette. Any true music critic would recognize Abe as one of the greatest players.
@yeebeascurvydawg I'm not yet done with your comments. Abe is not only one of the greatest bassists the world has ever known, but also a real living musical treasure to not only bass players, but musicians. Have you bothered to check his discography? If you did you would reconsider your comments on youtube. I would love to have a discussion with you any day and any time on the complete musicianship of Abraham Laboriel. Show me a bassist worth his salt and I'll point you to Abe.
after reading your comments i have suddenly realized the error of my taste and I now realize that abe laboriel is a better bassist than Jaco, because of your arguments. thank you for explaining this to me, please tell me what else to think as I have no real opinions. you fucking christ faggot suck my balls, you are all alike trying to tell other people what to feel and think. I will reiterate my statement. JACO > ABE LABORIEL. end of fucking story
@yeebeascurvydawg Well done, master of sarcasm. Are we getting a little angry here? I thought we were having a nice decent discussion. Where from all this vitriol? There you are getting all worked up. Now, why would I want to tell you 'what to feel and think'? You should be ashamed of yourself streaming such abuse when some well considered comments would have done. You don't have to descend that low (no pun intended) to make yourself heard. And what did you mean by 'you are all alike...'?
@yeebeascurvydawg Well, in case you have forgotten Abe is still here - a living legacy and testament to great musicianship. Looking forward to hearing from you. Looking forward to hearing from you. Just a reminder to restrain yourself from being profane.
I don't think you know anything about music if you think that Wooten and Claypool are all "tricks" as you put it. To say they are only players and not musicians shows how ignorant you are to their real talent.
it's not taped over. it's original audio that just looks funny + fake because the audio is out of sync with the video...a common problem that youtube causes during some uploads for some reason. happened to a couple of my vid posts too. they are in sync on my end but when uploaded a few got out of sync.
You know, Stanley Clark, Marcus and Wooten are master bassists but somehow, Abe Laboriel is more than a master - he is a seasoned master. His solos are more than show-off, they have some sweetness to them ! The way he plays, the way he moves with the music, 1:55 - 2:01 .. unparalleled !
Whether its Ritenour's Rio Funk, or Koinonia's Valentine, or Herb Alpert's Rise, Abe is the man, a monster of the bass guitar. Hell, his bass line for the song Rise has reached messianic status amongst the hip-hopster-gangsta rapper crowd. The man is the best.
I'm pretty sure Marcus Miller played the bassline to rio funk... I know Abe was on the album Rio as well, but if you listen it's definitely a more Marcus-esque bass sound, though before he had the active shadowsky pre-amp in his J-bass.
Yes. Thanks for pointing that out, appreciate it are so right, my apologies to all. I've just consulted the back of the Rio album, and you are quite correct. Oh well, but hey , it is a great solo nonetheless eh?
Abe does play on Ritenour's Rio album, on songs Ipanema Sol and It Happens Every Day. Koinonia's album More than a Feeling contains some great solos by Abe. Its hard to find an album he's not played on.
At the beginning he's playing the head (melody) of the song "Laura" - then he goes into the solo. At 4:12 he goes back into the melody again and finishes it. It's that simple :-)
i'm a brazilian musician.. i know wht is bossa-nova.. and he was playing some bossa-nova chords on the begining... just pick up on internet some bossa-nova stuff to bass, and see how is the chords...
@heitorcrespo Abe's parents were Garifuna; he was born in some Central American country, I believe.
He studied flamenco guitar technique prior to learning the bass. There's no doubt that you could hear some "Southern Hemisphere" in there, whether it's Brazilian, Caribbean ... Abe's roots often come out, because he's the genuine article, and he plays from his heart and soul.
uhmm is this what they called voice/bass chords?! thanks ol

"Laura" by David Raksin

You know, Stanley Clark, Marcus and Wooten are master bassists but somehow, Abe Laboriel is more than a master - he is a seasoned master. His solos are more than show-off, they have some sweetness to them ! The way he plays, the way he moves with the music, 1:55 - 2:01 .. unparalleled !

The song is called Laura. It's an old jazz standard.

The man is the best.
rothko70 2 years ago
I'm pretty sure Marcus Miller played the bassline to rio funk... I know Abe was on the album Rio as well, but if you listen it's definitely a more Marcus-esque bass sound, though before he had the active shadowsky pre-amp in his J-bass.

Yes. Thanks for pointing that out, appreciate it are so right, my apologies to all. I've just consulted the back of the Rio album, and you are quite correct. Oh well, but hey , it is a great solo nonetheless eh?
rothko70 2 years ago
no worries, jus thought i'd mention it. and yea, Abe is friggin' awesome, pity he's not more famous tbh.
NPjazzsaxmusic 2 years ago
Abe does play on Ritenour's Rio album, on songs Ipanema Sol and It Happens Every Day. Koinonia's album More than a Feeling contains some great solos by Abe. Its hard to find an album he's not played on.

I didn't understand the first part of the solo, but then it started getting really funky, nice...
taufoofar 2 years ago
At the beginning he's playing the head (melody) of the song "Laura" - then he goes into the solo. At 4:12 he goes back into the melody again and finishes it. It's that simple :-)

This comment has received too many negative votes show
he plays good but he over did it... some places its 2 flashy should of stuck more to the melody.
irkman123 2 years ago
It's a solo. He is supposed to"over do it". Absolutely gifted. God workin.
TheKingharris17 2 years ago 3
It's a solo, dude... ever listened to Victor Wooten? Flashy, but they're all solos. That's how bass is supposed to be by itself.

heitorcrespo 2 years ago
this tune is a standard i believe it's laura and he's playing it like a ballad mixed with some bop lines..the first 4 minutes no indication of bossa
jazzin4bass 2 years ago
i'm a brazilian musician.. i know wht is bossa-nova.. and he was playing some bossa-nova chords on the begining... just pick up on internet some bossa-nova stuff to bass, and see how is the chords...
heitorcrespo 2 years ago
bossa nova refers to the rhythm and feel of a piece, not the chords
gtyler7292 2 years ago
bossa-nova isn't just rhythim, watch some tom jobim stuff, like the music luiza.
the people that played bossa on 50's "discovered" a lot of new chords, and if you listen to them you wiil see, that just appear on bossa-nova songs
heitorcrespo 2 years ago
this music is brazilian.. is bossa-nova
heitorcrespo 2 years ago
@heitorcrespo Abe's parents were Garifuna; he was born in some Central American country, I believe.
He studied flamenco guitar technique prior to learning the bass. There's no doubt that you could hear some "Southern Hemisphere" in there, whether it's Brazilian, Caribbean ... Abe's roots often come out, because he's the genuine article, and he plays from his heart and soul.

This guy is too good. Seeing this makes me regret selling my Valley Arts bass, had one just like it. Oh well.

the 'some famous song' is Laura. Check out Charlie Parker's (w strings) version sometime. Abe is amazing!
