I've driven with the night vision from the older cadillacs. The newer technology of the BMW gives a much clearer image.

cadillac started this, with the first car thermal imager..merceds went near-infrared, and i hear japanese acura RL's use thermal. Oh, and of course the BMW uses thermal imaging tech, saw it today..Oh, i hear LExus uses a near-infrared system.

Popsci did a article wayback, and noted that while near-infrared appears more similar to normal lights(naturally), normal headlamps will inferfere via "bloming" from NIR lakage. Thermals dont undergo headlight blooming, and people are more obvious.

Mercedes started this infrared night vision thing in the w221 S class in 2007. lol.

The 7 series has cameras on the side tho to see upcoming traffic so thats cool

The system warns you with an acustic signal an shows the Night Vision at the screen if it's activated and there's someone or something on the street. (Don't worry about the driving help systems of BMW ;-) )

It's a beautiful piece in every way. But for a swede it's a bit confusing as well, 'cause it sounds a bit like Swedish but it isn't. I guess the writer must have borrowed random words from the Scandinavian languages, predominantly Swedish, Norwegian and Icelandic.
