  • Going to be getting one of these for playing in my house. Such a nice amp! Absolutely excellent review, dude. :)

  • Is this loud enough for playing with a drummer and full band? Anything can be mic'd for a gig but for practice with a band n such would be an important issue.

  • @ThePowrWithn not really. you need in my opinion a minimum of 30 watts to be heard cleanly with a full band.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Awesome, thanks. Sorry about all the questions, just trying to make up my mind. Have you run into the issues I hear about with the effects loop not working with pedals? Or is that only for the 50h/100h?

  • @ThePowrWithn from what I've read, the 22h has a slightly more forgiving loop but even still, the 100/50h loop is fine. It's just line level which means it's made ideally for rack units but still MOST pedals but not all will work in the loop. i've yet to hear a pedal that wouldn't work in the 22h loop.

there's a running list in a dedicated forum thread over at the harmony central amp forum where JCA owners can say what works and what doesn't.

  • @FastRedPonyCar 30 watts is barely enough I'm using a peavey classic 30 through an extension cab with a tonelab le and it's loud enough but barely

  • I appreciate this demo alot, nice to actually see what the amp can do instead of the player...(not that you aren't good by any means!) I am impressed with the gain from this little thing, and for the price, I think it will compliment the Jackson DK2S I am getting :)

    Thanks!

  • @BPKeeper88 thanks man. you know they have a higher gain hotrodded version coming soon? It was unveiled a few weeks ago at NAMM. If you're wanting to do higher gain/metal with the amp, I would consider waiting to see how that one stacks up. I'm hoping I can get one to do an A/B comparison video.

  • has 5 12ax7 and 2 el84s just a kick ass amp all around

  • Are these the stock tubes or have you replaced them? Thanks.

  • @metalfan1212 in this video I think I had a ruby HG preamp tube in the first socket but the rest were stock.

  • NICE DEMO :))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

  • I got the JCA20h instead. I didn't want a lot of gain, and I've always wanted a simple, one-channel amp, so it really works. Also... An all-tube 20W head for only $249? I couldn't pass it up haha. So far I love it. I'm pushing an Epiphone Les Paul Custom through it currently (all stock).

  • @DaveyD327 cool. yeah there are also a lot of mods that can be done to the 20h to improve or change things if you ever want to do that. It's a good time to be a musician with all this inexpensive tube gear on the market.

  • uh....anyone know where to put a 'Warren mod'?

  • Can this amp produce that sort of bluesy, warmer tone without being too dry or too bright sounding? I am thinking about buying it because it's affordable and I like its higher gain, but I want something that I can still play some slower blues stuff on.

    Thanks

  • @DaveyD327 yeah the clean channel with the gain knob pushed will really deliver that type sound. the lead channel is more or less rock and modern rock only.

If you need less gain or an amp more specifically for blues, check out the egnater rebel 20.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Thanks for the reply! I went ahead and ordered the JCA20H just because it's cheaper and simpler (college isn't free haha). Also, I liked the tones you were getting in this video before you switched to the hi-gain channel, and from what I've read online, the lo-gain channel on this amp is basically a JCA20H.

Also, I know it doesn't have a loop... so would throwing a reverb pedal in front of it muck up the signal too much to be cranked?

    Thanks.

  • @DaveyD327 you wouldn't be able to run the preamp gain very high if you had reverb in front. you'd need to get most of your gain from an overdrive pedal.

  • More gain than the jca20?

  • @theoffspringrox77 yeah the clean/normal channel on this amp is the same as the 20H. The lead channel on the 22H is sort of like that on the 50/100H.

  • @FastRedPonyCar Nice, would a boss overdrive pedal help the 20h out a bit? I play metal for a band but i would love to have one of these and 1x12 for the house or practice.

  • @theoffspringrox77 in that case, get that little krank amp. much better for metal.

  • This sounds fantastic. Have you played/heard the 50w head?

  • @metalcore929 not in person but I'm assuming it's just like my 100 watt verison with less clean headroom when pushed hard.

  • @FastRedPonyCar How do you like the cleans on the 100? Are they good for use a clean base for pedals, warm?

  • @FastRedPonyCar where did buy this from

  • @DReidGuitars they sent me a pre-sale unit to do testing/demos but there are a lot of retailers that either have them or are waiting for new stock. check ebay or musicians friend or maybe sam ash or other large online dealers.

  • Great video Drew. Can't wait to see the next one on this amp.

  • Hey Drew, really appreciate all your cool video reviews etc... 1 question for you. If you could only have 1 amp, to do everything, dirty & clean, home recording & small gigs, cost < 2 large, what would you get?

  • @HuckFoly hands down my nitro. it does everything I need but it's a 1 trick pony... that's the thing. and the clean isn't that great. it's ok for a high gain amp but not as good as the cleans my titan(s) had and honestly not as good as the JCA100 clean either.

playing live and recording are 2 VERY different things though. Ideally, I'd use the nitro live and an axe fx II at home to record with. WAAAY easier to use but oh my god at the price tag of the AxeFX II right now... insane.

  • @FastRedPonyCar I hear ya.. you know, a few years ago, I got a heck of allot out of an old beat up Peavey 5150 60 watt combo, also a 1 trick pony, but you could do cleans at lower levels at home. I did like that JCA100HDM review you did as well. I'm amp shopping, just sold off a Peavey Classic 30, so appreciate the insight and reviews. Will look at the Splawn and also looking at an Engle Thunder 50..

  • @HuckFoly If you can live with just 1 channel, the VHT deliverance amps are the best bang for the buck I've ever heard. There are mods for them to add fx loop and foot switchable low/high gain function too.

  • its about 70% home use. i'm contemplating between the 50w combo and the jca22 head. my main concern is tight, high gain and also having cleans and from most demos and videos, i can't quite tell if the jca22 has cleans and if the 50w has the same type of gain

  • @chickenlittleify gain on the 22H is a little tighter/cleaner and (not shown in this vid) if you raise the clean channel volume really high and then slowly lower the preamp gain from 0, it will stay squeaky clean but be very loud. That's kinda how the soldano "clean" channel's operate.

  • i'm stuck in a bind. I'm considering either this or the 50w combo. will this amp have some cleans as well as really tight, high gain tones or should i spend a little extra money for the 50w combo?

  • @chickenlittleify why not get the 50 watt head? will you be playing with a band or just jamming at home?

  • how would the amp be if i replaced the stock tubes with 6L6's? i play mainly thrash metal. also, would i need to boost in order to be able to get that kind of tone? think exodus - bonded by blood, sodom - agent orange, tankard - beast of bourbon, sadus - chemical exposure, etc.

  • @Metalhead121396 6L6's won't fit in EL84 sockets. EL84's use a smaller 9 pin socket that only they can use.

  • @FastRedPonyCar ah, okay. thanks for saving me from wasting my money on the amp and trying that XD

  • dude great demo...... very nice tone in that amp, what about a footswitch? is it included????

  • @duran2085 yep

  • Would this be a good amp for some Steve Vai lead tones, if you were to put an Ds-1 out in front, with some effects in the loop?

  • @natrat51 yeah but you don't need a boost to get Vai type tones. the FX loop is good on this amp and seems to like line level pedals more than the 50 or 100H.

  • Hey man how do you find the Tokai's? Great playing by the way!

  • @semplen thanks. I've only played 2: mine and an LS85 and they're both outstanding and equal to, if not better than most gibsons.

  • What! this one is almost twice the price of the 20h

  • @maneatingtoilets It's twice as good!

  • @maneatingtoilets Because of an added drive channel, the legendary soldano lead overdrive, which is made possible thanks to two extra 12AX7 tubes thrown in the preamp. It's rare to find a $399 head that'll pump that much gain without crappy fx. It's a well rounded package that can cover a very broad range of tones, that's why it's $150 extra.

  • Thanks to your demo,I just bought this amp on E-bay. I just love it, but when I use the effects loop, I lose significant volume. It also seems to drain the batteries in the pedals. Do you have these problems? Any suggestions? Great demo. thankx Swayze

  • Hey,

I can't seem to find this amp anywhere. Where did you buy it?

  • @skunizzi This one is a pre-production unit they sent me to record demos and sales media with. A few stores are getting them in. They're in really high demand so they may be scarce for a while.

  • Wow this amp is exactly what I am looking for, came out just in time. You make it sound great Drew.

  • @spaivxx IT makes itself sound good! haha it's seriously unbeatable for the money

  • Comment removed

  • Drew, can you give details on how this amp changes channels? I haven't seen any switches or buttons for this. Thanks

  • @pupstop1 uses a single button switch

  • So...how much does it cost?

  • @FastRedPonyCar Awesome, thanks.

  • Seems to me that it's a bit misleading (or doesn't give enough information) to describe it as the JCA20H with a drive channel - as far as I can tell, it's more like the preamp from the JCA50H or JCA100H with a 20W EL84 power section. Am I right or completely off-base?

  • @digiscream yeah pretty much. the schematics may be totally different but the overall feel and operation of the 22H vs the 100H is virtually the same to me.

  • @FastRedPonyCar I haven't seen the schematics, but from the feature list it does seem so. I'm considering getting one of these as a home/spare to my 50H...when they finally arrive in the UK ;) By the way, which speakers are in the Splawn cab?

  • @digiscream K100's and V30's in an X pattern

  • Ok - I need to put in my 2 cents..lol - first, the JCA 20H is awesome.. I love the gain, and when I want to get the next level (JCA22H), I use my CHEAP (20 bucks off craigslist) Bad Monkey Overdrive. That solved the pinch harmonics, heavier gain needed, and a boost. So seriously, the original JCA20H, with a decent OD will get you where this is. I do not use effects loops, so that would be other gain with new version. Also, METAL HEADS, run the amp clean, and buy the EH METAL MUFF, serious dist.

  • @Carfo76 My set up is actually pretty simple - I run the JCA through a 4x12 Cab @ 8ohm, and use an A/B pedal after my wah and put my OD pedals after that.. 1 pedal (BAD MONKEY) goes to the JCA20, and my other Amp is a fender hot rod deville. Here is where the Metal Muff comes in... Basically, I love the clean sound on the Fender, and like the OD channel, but it's not the gain from JET CITY, so I throw in the Metal Muff, which has its own EQ , and wham, like having 3 Channels. all sound amazing..

  • Can someone figure out what settings he is using, EQ wise, for the clean???

  • Omg...and I wanted a Marshall...this is...my next big save up :3 DAD CAN MOW THE LAWN FOR $10 PER LAWN!!!! cya guys in a couple months....

  • @DavidTheCheeseCurd I hear ya. I wanted a Tiny Terror until I heard this was coming out. In the Namm demo they said it was similar to having the SLO circuit built in. That sold me. I'm selling my Blackstar and probably my Marshall to get one of these.

  • Time to start calling stores.

  • Have you played the Egnater Tweaker? They are booth Hi gain low watt crunch machines. I'm trying to decide which amp I like better.

  • @Squingelio yeah this amp's overdrive absolutely destroys the tweaker but the tweaker has a bit more clean headroom. I think it sounded best cranked clean with a good overdrive. I would take this over a tweaker any day. The rebel 30 or rebel 20 are better competition.

  • Just played one at my local music store! Sounded awesome!! I couldn't believe how loud it was for only 20 watts.

  • Can you do a short demo with some metal playing? I'm really intreseted in this amp but I'm not sure it's high gain enough to handle metal.

  • Great demo! and always enjoy your playing!!!!

  • How did you come by this amp? I have not seen them anywhere for sale yet.

  • @pupstop1 JCA sent it to me to get some high quality demo/promo media. They use these videos on their facebook and use them to show products to their product dealers.

Doug said that they are in production now and that the first batch of them are already on their way over here so it shouldn't be too much longer.

  • JCA's really aren't built for metal. They are pretty stinking good for blues classic rock and hard rock and 80's hair metal type stuff. The lead channel on every JCA I've plugged into is simply too smooth and compressed to really pull off that tight staccato palm mute chugging stuff

With that said, I'm not afraid to push an amp to it's limits to see just how high a tolerance it's boosted high gain capabilities are. Next vid has high gain boosted stuff.

  • THE CLEAN ON THIS AMP IS USELESS! Why put out a 2-channel amp and not offer the ability to get a decent clean?? Only Crunch and Lead?? You can use a pedal to boost the Lead. VERY DISAPPOINTING. Was hoping for a great clean channel to go with the awesome Jet City crunch. No versatility with this amp! What a waste.

  • @DistortionTherapy I'm glad it's crunch and lead i'm very particular about my clean so I have Dr Z dedicated for it.

dude just swap one of the 12AX7's for a lower gain tube.

  • Hmmmm.... I actually prefer the original channel. It's way more open and crunchy to my ears; less bright and compressed.

  • Thumbs up for a metal test!

  • @Den1sVengeance Oh yes Drew please do a video where you plug a guitar thats been detuned to the key of "bowl movement" then plug into an amp that was designed for a mid voiced instrument (ohhh like a guitar perhaps?") ya thats it.

Then I'll post a video of me trying to pull a trailer of logs up a hill with a fucking Ferrari.

  • @bornburied you make no sense... srsly stfu

  • @Den1sVengeance Unless you meant old school metal @ A 440

  • @bornburied You spelled "bowel" wrong.... Your knowledge exceeds that of my neighbor with Down's... His name is Billy. Sarcasm that wasn't provoked blows, doesn't it?

  • @KillswitchEngage42 Can I buy a vowel for bowel?

It's called pre-emptive sarcasm, 90% chance of being on the money -based on observation and experience.

Go back to your eight string and your pedestrian djent riffs

  • @bornburied I don't have an eight string.... I'm a double bass player. Djent swing?

  • @KillswitchEngage42 mmmm ok but how aboot sum djent rockabilly?

  • @bornburied I play jazz, not rockabilly. I'll satisfy your stupidity with a nice block.

  • @KillswitchEngage42 You mad bro? ; )

  • @bornburied ;)

  • ITS NOT A CLEAN CHANNEL!!! this amp has NO clean channel

It's the lower gain or CRUNCH channel

    CRUNCH and LEAD

There is no dedicated clean channel you can lower the drive to nearly nill as you show in the video and get a cleanish sound but thats it.

  • that was actually a fast 12 minutes, good demo!

  • sweet!

  • Hey Drew, so you were running the head thru your Whitebox cab? Sounds great. I guess it just looks good on the Splawn. LOL I might get busy one day and put one of the Vintage 30's in my Egnater 2x12 Cab just to see what it sounds like. I didn't know you played Bass also. Nice demo.

  • what tubes do you have? i have the stock ones in my 20h, this sounds a million times better

  • @Linqua2112 This and the next demo I'm editing now has the stock tubes.

  • @FastRedPonyCar are they still using Sino stock?

  • @Linqua2112 could be... generic chinese that's about all I can tell. I'm not schooled up on ID'ing tubes based on plate/internal structure.

  • @FastRedPonyCar hahaha neither am i man. it actually took me a while to ID my tubes, but i finally found the logo for the Sino company. grangeramp dott com /shop/images/categories/sino.gif

  • @Linqua2112 yeah the power tubes have the sino logo on them (now that I see that's what the S is for) and I'd assume the 12ax7's are the same.

  • Great sound... but is it the head humming on CH2 that we hear when you're not playing..to the point that you have to switch back to ch1 cause it is annoying..I was ready to get this thing but this totally kills it ..bummer :-(

  • How do your record those heads? Through a port? Or ???

  • Man should I get the JCA50H from guitar center for 582$!!!

  • @GuitarRazze That seems like too much for the JCA 50 honestly. Online it goes for $499, and with free shipping. See if you can price match it, Musicians friend and American Musical have it listed at $499.

  • @NicholasRandFnR but in euro its 402. which is the cheapest i can find, and guitar center ships to finland!

  • awesome vid man, love the Jet CIty Stuff, I think this is the one to buy for home use and recording
