Sorry but I have to say having listened to the whole show, Gary Husband was the man on the drums. He played the whole two hour set and more without missing a beat.
And I am a Mark King fan lol Yeah he rocked also :D
This is from the 1989 Prince's Trust concert in Birmingham. The backing band is Level 42. A great performance. One of my favourite songs and two of my all time favourite bands. It doesn't get much better than this.
My favourite version........Corrines vocals are great..........and MK's Bass is thumping.
Level 42 as the 'house' band at this princes trust was a master stroke. Check out MK's playing with Mica Paris and also with Tony Hadley.............sublime!!
OMG ray's daughter made it to play the nec just as i went to see this concert, her dad was a bass player in my uncles band who played 60's stuff at pubs n clubs n holiday parks, great and from waltham( grimsby) only act to come out of grimsby lol
All that wank over "girl power" in the 90's!! There is plenty of that in 1989 with Corrine here and Mica Paris in the other set and don't they both look fantastic. You don't have to wear skimpy clothes to look sexy
@jamesg734 Gary played a blinder at this gig. He was awesome. As were all the musicians. Top draw quality. And it showed, or sounded more like. RIP Diana.
not only does mark king play bass on this ,the whole of level 42 were the backing band for the whole concert!! alan murphy(guitar),gary husband (drums)and mr mike lindup(keys)!!
Hey, GBS1043 - thanks for finally getting a confirmation on the thumb's up back to Princess Diana.
That was my guess a couple of years ago when I first came across this video in its previous posting. I figured it must have been Diana from the expression on Corinne's face; also, I thought Prince Charles would be a little bit too "reserved" to be giving Corinne a thumb's up.
GBS1043's right - this is THE definitive live version of "Breakout." The full orchestra and Mark King on bass really takes it to another performance level!
BTW, given how hot the song is rocking (and how it was still a recent hit back in 1989), it is surprising that the audience wasn't more into it - but maybe at a Prince's Trust concert, it's a little more sedate crowd.
However, glad to see at least one member of the audience really getting into the music - 0:27-0:30,bottom of screen.
I said that this was the best live version of Breakout, but the composer (Mr. Wizard) did not agree with me... I still think this is the best live version of Breakout EVER recorded.
Her voice presents natural challenges LIVE, she did a great job. Corrine has a variable pitch with a vocal slide that she has to work very hard to control. Her style is usually found in lounge-style singing, but she has to project a soft tone over the horns and back up singers ...nicely done..
thats got to be from 1986 she totally looks like she did in 1986 i see myself and i do not look like 1986 i wish that it was 1986 she still has 1986 looks i'm glad that she has her 1986 hairdo she looks brilliant
Maybe everyone was just a bit nervous. After all, Princess Diana, Prince Charles and all of the other "big name" talent were watching.. I would have been a wreck.. By the way, the "thumbs up" Corinne gives at 2:17 is a "return" thumbs up to Princess Diana.. That has been confirmed by a band member...
Mark King thinks * ooo this is a funky track that I can play along too, woah I can't believe I didn't write this hit!* - Funny I always imagined that he would always do a good job on this track and sure enough......;P
This incarnation, with King on bass, should be called Slap Out Sister. Damn, his thumbs must be made of something indestructible.

Andy confirmed the "thumbs up" when I saw him last June. He also has said that this is NOT his favorite version of Breakout!
BTW, Corinne wrote the lyrics for "Breakout" for Paul Weller! She had a crush on Paul at the time....

This is really what we call real music! Not like the one our todays world: Too many actions with skimpy costumes for nothing.
Corrine shows impressively how good she can sing without all those modern today's sound effect machine. Respect !
I'm wondering where all those great composers of the 80's are gone today...
