  • -Bob, you wanna hang out?

  • @willingtotry Hang out where?

  • I wish!

  • Is he Steve Jobs brother? Lol

  • I love how he's so happy and his attitude is very warm.

  • BOOOONNNGGGG!!!!!!

  • How can anyone dislike this video?! Bob Gatzen is the man! He's giving away gold for free here. Thanks, Bob!

  • Hey. I think I might need help with wut to do here. I'm thinking about buying a 5 piece kit to ADD to my 4 piece kit. now the only thing I'm worried about is the fact that the toms that i have on the kit are the same size as some of the ones im planning to buy. What would u recommend? Idk whether to just mess around with tuning, or to sell the same size toms for new sized toms, but when i get it, I really dont think itd be a good idea to sell the toms just bcuz theyre the same size. Thank you.

  • @ACompetitiveHalo Obviously it's not a popular technique unless you hear something INSIDE that dictates LIKE drums. Differentiating in sound between them would be head choices, shell depths, tunings, etc. For sure...i'd experiment with the (2) 12" toms before buying into the SAME- drum technique.

  • @bobgatzen Forgot to mention... ask yourself the question..."Why LIKE Drums"?

  • bob you legend!!! i tried the idea of foam under the floor toms and it made the most ridiculous difference on my 16 inch floor tom, it growls like never before! it didnt really make any difference for the 14 inch floor tom though... any ideas as to why?

  • @residentdrummerpete Thanks so much pete! It should translate the same to the 14". Need more info...When's the last time you replaced heads? Have you always had problems in the tuning the 14" vs. the 16"?

  • @bobgatzen Well the heads on both drums are almost half a year old, and I hit the 14" a lot more than the 16" so that's probably the culprit. Funnily enough the 14" has always been much easier to get a good sound out of compared to the 16", it just doesn't sustain for very long, maybe a head change will fix it?

  • @residentdrummerpete A head change MIGHT fix the issue, but it's probably in the tuning. The 14" tom is a slightly smaller drum, so I'd suggest tuning it a little higher. I'd say give the batter head an extra 1/4 turn at each lug, and an extra 1/2 turn at each lug on the resonant head (assuming you don't already have it tuned higher.)

  • Hey bob, ive got my 12x9 tom on a snare stand and sometimes i have trouble get it to resonate enough. any ideas on how to help?

  • one question 350 z or 370 x cuz i love the both of them also thank you very much i had no idea about all this stuff now im an absolute nazi about keeping my stuff at top performing quality my dad is actually getting a bit annoyed but i told him if you knew what i knew you'd be doing the exact same thing thanks much bob

  • one question 350 z or 370 x cuz i love the both of them

  • like an after school special for drums lol

  • Good video. I like the bit on the snare drum basket. A tip of my own: I've found that if you settling a snare somewhat loosely into the basket so that the "grips" hold the snare rim around the "top" flange of the rim, instead of completely around the entire rim, it "floats" the drum, and a snare will sound more open and less choked. (It works for me, anyway.)

  • @sp3ci4lkpo You absolutely correct...Great tip! I never tighten the snare basket to the hoop.

  • pop woooow pop woooooow

  • @JoeMorris7 I prefer "rmmm...rmmm...rmmm!

  • @JoeMorris7 Its debatable bob

  • bock woooooow, bock woooow. Love it, bob you're the man.

  • @mattydizzle135 BBBBiiiiGGGGG Thanks matty!!

  • hey why are we in bobs car driving aro-.... :O he knows me better than i know myself...

  • @TwoKindsOfRight Yup!! I'm very sneaky!

  • Hey Bob,

I have a Pearl Vision series kit and the floor tom has the isolation feet. Also, as far as pearl suspension hardware, would you recommend the I.S.S. Mounts or the Optimount system mounts? Thanks a ton Bob, Happy holidays!

  • @xthexemoxmuffinx Wish I could help but frankly, I'm not a "Pearl" drummer so I'm not very familiar with their hardward. However, It's been awhile, but I did mess with the SST mechanism... I believe the Optimount was my fave choice. Sorry, wish I could be more helpful.

  • @xthexemoxmuffinx I'd say avoid the I.S.S. It puts a very awkward amount of pressure on the hoops. I'm not even really sure why they make it.

  • Bob you have a brilliant mind of percussion enthusiasm. You really demonstrate how far you can dive into the world of DRUMS! . . . "Little Things Make A Big Difference" - Takes a Pioneer way of thinking to discover them, Thankyou!

    P.s.

    Nice Car ;-)

  • @Drum4SOS Well thank you so much DR! It's messages like yours that keep me going with the channel. It's been quite a ride!

    Happy Holidays!

    bob

  • Wow bob. I love the passion you have. You are a true inspiration and seem like such a helpful guy. Thanks for all the tips from a fellow drummer in Australia.

  • @nuts351 I love you Aussie's! Never visited... too many hours in a plane!!

My mission is to keep drummers drumming. Always a pleasure... let's stay in touch.

  • @NoSCopes It's best to use both. The only way a carpet will work is if it's a thick pile... which doesn't work so well to stabilize the entire kit.

    hope this helps

  • And why haven't I looked you up before now????

I recently purchased a six piece pearl vision birch set. When I first got it home after the guys at percussion center put them together and tuned them they sounded brilliant. Now they are all dry sounding and weak....and now I know why. Time to do some tweaking. :-)

  • @Practicle24 Sounds like a work in progress... please let us know how your mission plays out.

  • Hey bob, is that a 350Z? nice vid

  • @CrissBlackHawk Yup...I'm driving a 370 Z now... great value! I grew up in gasoline ally... could of been a drummer or a driver... raced cars until I graduated Hartt College of Music. There's a strong connection between the drum set and car environment!!

  • Just keep reminding yourself. "Small details make BIG differences"

  • HOLY CRAP!!! I am now going to have to get pads for my floor tom!! That was amazing!!

  • hey bob, i've been wondering, DW's lugs are HUGE, don't they affect the resonance of the drum???

  • Wow I had no idea ... great video!

  • @ACuttyStom Nice message...Big thanks AC

  • @ACuttyStom Don't ya just luv surprises? I do!! Thanks AC!

  • Everyone knows the only way to add horsepower to your drums is to paint them red. Red adds at least 10 horsepower to anything. Thats why red horses run 10 times faster than any other color of horse.

  • @BangMeLikeAJrum Isn't that the truth!!! LoooooooooooooooooooooL!!!!!!!!

  • 7:01

    "f*ck wow"

  • @WMackbd Thanks Mack

  • is that a nissan z series car

  • @PearLDrummeR1871 Yes...I'm driving a 2010...best Z version yet!

  • @bobgatzen hell yea nissan 370z is beast

  • Do racks give drums more resonant or do stands

  • @snakeeyes5641 That's a good question. Whether you mount the toms on flor stands or a rack system, the difference in sound quality is minimal. Drummers who chose rack system generally are aiming for quick and easy set-up.

Either way, the important thing is to get the weight of the toms and cymbals off the bass drum.

    Bob

  • hi bob i record at home although i have little money to spend i need to quieten down my drums in my room so that my naybers dont complain this would be ver helpfull

  • I have an older Pearl Export which has the tom arms going into the drum shell. What can I do to get more "horsepower" out of my toms? Also, love the videos, they are extremely helpful and brimming with creative tips and tricks! :)

  • @adammanthegreat Same problem that ToOIO is having.

    1. Move the tom up and down the tom arm. Generally there's a spot where the the will resonate more freely

    2. Off the Pearl tom bracket and pick up Gary Gaugers new "RIMS" mount.

    Hope this helps

  • @bobgatzen Thanks Bob! I'll try that out.

  • i have a Yamaha Stage Custom and when i hold the 10" tom on my hand by the tom bracket, it would be beautiful and resonates alot. but when i put it on the stand, both all the way in an all the way out and in between, it sounds dead. Any tips?

  • @ToOlOGT22 Very typical... you have a couple of choices...

    1. Move the tom up and down the tom arm. Generally there's a spot where the the will resonate more freely

    2. Off the Yamy tom bracket and pick up Gary Gaugers new "RIMS" mount.

Good luck...let us know how it works out

  • he has a nissan 350 z

  • @freestylefilmsinc Back when we shot that vid...yes...now I'm driving a 370 Z...luv it!

  • @bobgatzen i have a new kit and i just bought a new Black X snare head and i put moon gel and it stained the head is there a way to get it out ?

  • Hey Bobby,

What about shell matereal. I'm thinking of buying a set of Gretsch Catalina Rock (Bonham sizes) that are used. The shell materiel I understand is Mahogany.

Really nice videos by the way. I've been playing for almost 40 years and I never realized things like the foam under the floor tom legs. Gee, since I teach lessons in the basement of my house maybe I ought to think of doing the oppositte for the sake of my two tenents.

  • @spercoco Thank you very much coco! Shell types are tricky in that most drummers have little or no experience with shell design. I could on and on about maple vs birch vs multiple wood combos...my best suggestion is to "audition" different styles of drums (in-store)and go for the the sound that strikes your fancy and forget about the shell design. This is why purcahsing on-line is an issue.

  • @bobgatzen Thanks so much for the response; and I haven't heard "Coco" since I was in high school. My last name is Percoco and I got a lot of "coo-coo for coa-coa puffs". I think your comment goes with my natural insticts but coming from you gives it much more weight. Fortunately I am going to have the chance to play these drums before I decide to purchase.

  • @spercoco Always my pleasure to help out...good luck on the new kit!

  • Your videos are very interesting and serve to reinforce some of my assumed ideas of the physics related princples of drums that I have had for years despite having a very cheap drum kit. With a lot of patience and your tips I have made that kit sound (in my humble opinion) quite good. Even though it is rusty and cheap, I love it very much. Probably for that reason, a lot like my car too really :)

  • @ercucchaio I agree, It's easy to become attached to your personal drum environment regardless of the quality of the kit. I am guilty of that myself. But there is another side that works for me...to keep things fresh...I constantly remind myself....Break the Rules!!

  • oh yea im convinced

  • Oh does it have any special perfermance tune ups im 11 so i want one :)

  • The new Z's are faster and handle better. My dad owned a service station so I grew up in gasoline alley. Raced go-carts when I was your age... started playing drums @ 10 years old and raced cars until I graduated from music school. Stick with the drums... they're safer!

  • Nice 350Z

  • I'm driving a 370Z now. I was a gearhead before I was a drummer... they relate big time!

  • thanks Pearl!

  • Hey Bob, I was wondering if putting foam under the floor tom legs will help the sound if your rums are on carpet? Thanks.

  • Actually a thick carpet works well depending upon the thickness of the pile. I suggest experimenting with the carpet by itself then compare it to the foam blocks.

  • Hi Bob,

I have only just discovered your vids and have found the tuning tips useful. I play a 1995 Pearl Export kit that I bought new: 14" tom (in Pearl snare stand) 16" and 18" floor toms, 24" bass. I thought it sounded like the ultimate rock kit until I placed the floor tom feet in foam.... Now it sounds FAT and LOW!!!....GREAT!!!.

  • Cool! Always happy to help out.

  • Bob thanks so much i was literally about to burn my floor tom cause it was just a dull attack with no resonance or tone so i got some foam and wow it's amazing thanks you so much!!!

  • I'M FEELING YOUR EXCITEMENT!!! Glad it worked out for you.

  • Hey Bob how about the old trick getting the bass drum spurs as high as possible in turn getting most of the shell off the floor while making a huge improvement in the sound of the bass drum. I think bass drums should come with two sets of spurs so you can elevate the entire shell off the floor. I remeber the old Slingerland drums had that option. IIRC Ludwig too.I think the curved Ludwig spurs would work the best.

  • Raising the front height level to match the height of the pedal works best. The issue is in the pedal hold-down clamp. If the bass drum is "tilted" on a n angle towards the pedal, the hoop will be distorted under tension which decreasing low end frequencies

  • What do you think of a snare stand for my 12" tom. I use a top of the line pearl snare stand 1000sd. it works fine. However i have the option of a y.e.s.s mounting system or a snare stand. What do you think??

  • NG... mounting a tom on a snare stand is a disaster. Best to pick up a double tom stand and suspend the drum. The snare stand will kill resonance. However, snare drum is unaffected due to hi-tension tuning.

  • A snare drum is affected. It depends on how much you tighten the basket. I just set my snare in the stand and tighten the basket just enough so the drum stays on the rubber ends of the basket. There is no tension on the drum shell.I figured this stuff out in the early 80s running a Sonor Phonic Beech snare drum. It sounded horrible tight then I took it out and hit it and viola great snare drum sound. IGreat vid Bob.

  • Right on!! Thanks Mike

  • i just noticed this when i removed the toms of there tom arms, and they sounded sweet ! and when i putthen back, they sounded like paper, so i just ordered the RIMS system! cant wait! thx for ur help , my drums used to sound like shit, now they sound better!

  • There ya go... that's why suspension system are so important. Shit to better... it's good start!

  • Bob, I hope you're not speeding through a residential area like some teenage jerk with a loud car, begging to be noticed in all the wrong ways and for all the wrong reasons! Ha ha, but seriously did you run over any dogs or children in the making of this video? At least run over some kid's ball or something?

  • I was very careful to scope out the scene. I'll let you in on the theatrics, the tires screeching is a sound sample. I never exceeded 45 mph. I may be crazy but not out of control...heh heh

  • hey bob i have ben playing drums for over 14 years and u know its never hard to admit there is other drums just as or better than me. but as long as you play drums its all good right ??? love it

so to the ponit i was wondering what does it take to be endorsed by dw pdp

  • I agree. Endorsements are all about "value". It's a 2-way street, a true business relationship. Promoting product through your ability and reputation is what companies are after. You need to convince them that you are a "valued" resource. My approach is..."What can I do for this company versus what can the company do for me". This ethic has proved successful throughout my career.

    Hope this helps, good luck!

    Bob.

  • get a virgin bass drum. also a drum rack or tom clamps that attach to cymbal stands.

  • Hi Bob, I'm having a problem with my 12" tom. If I hold the hoop it sounds perfect but when I mount it, it looses all resonance :( it sounds like the drum at 3:44 when it was on it's side. I have an L arm mounting system which has 2 arms in one (it attaches to my bass drum) and the weird thing is, when I take my 10" tom off the other arm the 12" sounds fine. I've tried changing the position and I've even put the arm upside down but with no success :(

If u can help Bob I would be very greatfull

  • You need to purchase a floor stand and get the toms off bass drum... like you see on my videos. Also, this will improve your BD sound... it's win-win investment

  • Your tuning tips have really helped me a lot. :] Thanks you for all of the videos. And by the way, I love the finish on your drums.

  • BIGTIME Thanks! tj

  • 350z sorry

  • 350z

  • Comment removed

  • not only does he have an awesome drum kit.....from the looks of the inside he's got an awesome car too!!!!!!

    thanks

  • Yes, The "RIMS" mounts have a universal plate for all toms all tom brackets to be attached.

  • The Gauger, "RIMS" mounts will work fine with the Pearls casings

  • DW's suspension system is not universal, it's designed strictly for their drums. yes, I believe they make Gold version for kits with gold hardware.

Gary Gauger's "RIMS" mounts are a standard in the industry.

  • Bob Gatzen, I have watched like 25 of your videos and they all helped me now I know how to tune everything to a very good pitch. Thanks Bob Gatzen.

  • Only 25...lol!! Thanks skater

  • Well I was just estimating lol.

  • Love the Zildjian 'Z' On the steering wheel!

  • lol!!!! I never thought of it that way. The Z is the name of the car. I gotta tell Zildjian...thanks mag!

  • My Snare Sounds Better than ever! Thank Bob From QUEBEC CANADA!!!!!

  • Bravo! Thanks for your success story. Here's a snare drum tuning tip that i find helpful...

Begin by tuning the snare & batter close to the same pitch. Start by tuning both heads to an "A". Than raise the batter a 1/2 step up at a time (Bb,B etc) while listening closely to the variations in sound. You should notice the sound getting changing from a snary-type sound to more of a pitched tone as the batter head is tensioned upwards.

  • "With great power comes big responsebilty" :) I"ll try every trick you show.

    Greetings from Poland :)

  • Bravo! Now that's an original message...thanks!

  • Master...

  • Thank you so much but please call me Bob...master scares me!

  • lmao!

  • oooh I don't know about genius... ingenious perhaps at times

    Either way...THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

  • First i just want to thank you for doing what you do. THANK YOU BOB GATZEN!!!!! <3

Hrhm.. second I got thinking while tuning my drumkit with lot of help from your tonal tuning technique and it sounds so much better and took a lot less time than it used to do for me!

Well what i was thinking about was that you really seem to love resonance and I wondered how Tama's "air ride snare mounting system" would work for the snare?

And also Im wondering why don't you use it?

  • First of all... thank you very much for the genuinely nice comment!

I haven't had a "hands-on" with the Tama drum so I can't give you an honest opinion. I endorse DW drums so I use they're snare drums almost all the time. However, I have have faves I use on certain occasions for instance, Noble & Cooley, Zildjian Snare drum and some vintage Ludwigs.

  • bob.....u made me kiss my sweet toms and respect my drums evn more and more

  • Ahhh, music to my ears!

  • i didnt git it bob ......any way can you please tell me wats the main reason of putting the drum set on a carpet and thnx>>>>

  • To anchor the drums from moving around during performance

  • Mr. Gatzen you are the professor..

Your tips are very helpful for me and my drum..

I have a question for you, i have a premier classic modern series snare drum, 14x5.5 .. the question is, what is the best pair of drum heads to get a warm but punchy sound.. Cheers..

  • Oh Please call me Bob... no formalities on my channel

Depends what you mean by "punchy". I think of punch as a form of density in tone. The Evans ECS-RD batter with a Hazy 300 snare has it but with a bit of metallic toneit's got "Ping & Punch" all at the same time. Another batter that has different kind of thing is the new "ONYX" batter and finally, the Powercenter-RD has a fair amount of "density" at specific tunings. Hope this helps

  • Forgot to include this set-up... The Evans Hazy 300 snare with the Genera Dry or the Powercenter-RD along with a Min-EMAD Muffler attached to the batter and snare side for a drier tone. Please let me how it works out for you

  • hey Bob

do you recomment that i take thelegs of my floor toms and buy suspention brackets for them

  • No not necessarily. Floor toms with legs are easy to position and make the drum feel very solid @ the stick. If you "cushion" the legs they sound as good if not better than mounted. Check the "Quik-Tips"...there's a demo on it.

  • Wow, you are a true drumdoctor hehe.

    Greetings from Holland !

  • My mom always wanted me to be a doctor. Hey Mom, wherever you are... you got your wish!

    Thanks danny!

  • Carpet can work depending on the pile thickness. Commercial rugs have very little give. Try the foam and compare...just gotta experiment.

  • Thank you so much bob ill try the foam

  • That floor tom tip was really interesting and makes a HUGE difference.

  • Interesting.... in the connection between Floor Tom and the word HUGE!... heh heh

  • Hi Bob,

I think you should be awarded a knighthood and referred to as Sir Bob. For the first time in my life I have been actually enjoying tuning and the sound I am able to achieve. I did purchase one of your videos a number of years ago however however after watching your clips recently things have really clicked. I can't do much to improve the performance of my old rusty ute but thanks to you I feel my drums are sounding great.

    Sincere thanks,

    Greg (Sydney)

  • Thanks so much that's wonderful to hear. I luv your suggestion but I don't know about Sir Bob... kind of intimidating. How about just plain ol...Bob. It's always worked well.

  • I've seen much drumming videos about techniques, classes, rythms, but nothing even close to your attention to details about the essential part of a drummer, the drums.

Thank you man, you're the best. A hug from Colombia.

  • Same back to you. Messages like yours fuel the fire... thank you!

  • Thanks P. I can't tell you how much I enjoy positive feedback. Right now I'm buried in R & D. I'm hoping to get into new vids by mid-Feb. so hang in there!

  • Yeah, Pearl has a reputation for simple hardware fixes.

  • Thnk you soo much you have answered so many of the questions I have asked my slef after watching like 30 mins of your lessons superb!!

p.s 350 Z sick GTR super sick THXs again

  • You're very welcome and thanks for taking the time to say let us know about your success.

  • hahaha "here's the cool.... BONGGG"

best snare basket snapping noise thing EVER

  • Thank you again Bob, your advice is completely invaluable and set out in a way that is easy to digest yet isn't patronising. Fantastic!

  • Wow, how nice...I do my best to simplify what can be a confusing mess for many drummers. Thanks!

  • thank you bob, you are unique .... SEND TO SANTA CLAUS PEDALS TO ARGENTINA TO BOA! ajajajajajajajajajajajajaj

    greetings

  • you are amazing bob...

    cheerssss..happy new years

  • Thanks so much... good to hear from Argentina. I'm still amazed with the worldwide connections on YT

  • pot woooooooooooow!!! lol

    7:08

  • if i put it on a carpet is it the same?

  • to a degree, yes, depends on how thick the pile is.

  • 350 z

    love it

  • Me too. the 370 is coming out in 09. Faster, smaller, lighter... fits my profile just fine

  • how do you get the rim off?

  • Not sure what you mean by "rim off' Where is it on the vid?

  • it's at 8,19 ...I was also wondering : at 1:45 there is this little kind of cymbal on the top left corner..I was wondering what sound it produces and what is it for? Does it sound exactly like a ride bell? i dont think so. .. by the way do you work for evans?

  • They are custom-made 8" heavy A. Zildjian's set up as an X-hat.

  • hi bob im ariel from argentina very far away... jaja, i bought a yamaha stage custom and i play punk/hardcore music, but also i like to play jazz, latin, etc...so my question is.. what kind of drums heads can i get to develop an alternative sound.. i was thinking on remo emperor heads, but well i hope that you can help me. by the way you are such an inspiration for me cause you explain everything in such an easy way thanks man! bye

  • You're very welcome!

Heres a good head combo for aggressive music.

TOMS- EC-2 clears or G+s clear or coated For the reso the EC-reso..

    BD- EMAD 2/ Emad reso

    SNARE-PowerCenter/Rd or ECS-RD w/Hazy 300 snare

This set-up is a good starting point, especially the toms where you can switch off batters only for new possibilities, experimentation. Evans new EC-reso's work great with any style batter head.

  • bob your the bomb, man you have forgot more than most will ever know.i always learn from your vids.the way you explain things helps dummies like me,get the best out of the kit i have.thanks and keep'em comming

  • Ahhh... great timing... just what I needed... a little inspo goes a long way Thank you!

  • Hey Bob, I've tried some of these ideas with good results. I have a question which I'm not sure where to post, but I feel this is a good spot. Anyway, I'm researching drum kits for purchase in the near future and I'm realizing wood selection is playing a huge part in my decision. I'm familiar with bugdet drum sets that use "select hardwood" and especially poplar wood. But what can I expect from Maple and Birch and even Ash wood drums. I'm sure this will help others as well. Thanks So much.

  • There are so many other factors beyond the type of wood that come into play, making the definition of sound difficult. My DW kits are maple (red flame) and birch (blue). The maple kit produces more sustain in the sml diameter drums and vice versa in the larger drums. Go figure? Heads, suspension systems & bearing edges impact tone. Sound is subjective... My philosophy is, if it sounds good to you, it's a good sound. . Audition and experimentation is my best suggestion.

  • I understand all "outside factors", but I always thought of wood as the foundation of the sound. Like I mentioned I played poplar wood drums, but a freind of mine had a birch kit (of the same brand, and that I would tune)...it always sounded so pure and recorded very well. I was just looking for your imput on maple drums and especially ash wood which is pretty rare.

Thanks again and I hope you keep this up for all of our sake!

  • bob, first i wanna say that your awesome, but im young and my drumset is generic. and im having so much trouble tuning and finding a nice deep rich sound. i have evans clear g2 genera heads on the top and stock heads on the bottom. it makes me so mad that i cant find a sound that satisfies me. it usually is so bad i stop drumming for weeks bc i get so mad. im happy with my paiste cymbals, but i absolutely hate my drums. and right now i cant afford a new one. please help me

  • Thanks Paiste. Best to view the entire "Tonal-Tuning" series on the channel. It's about training your ears to hear pitch and pitch relationships (intervals) from drums. It's a method that works. Take a look and let me know how it works out for you.

  • Your resonate heads should probably be swapped out as well. Those heads have A LOT to do with your tone, and could be the only issue your having.

  • yea i know, since then i've tuned over and over and found a sound that i like, but instead of getting resonant heads, im buying a new set all together, and it comes with remo's on top and bottom.

  • Bob, I've played a seventies Pearl kit of questionable quality for 14 years. Your video will help me get the most out of the Ludwig Legacy Classic set that's coming my way! The rack toms come with RIMS style mounts. The 14x14 and 16x16 floor toms are on plain old legs though. Should I try to get RIMS mounts for them? You said there are commercial products available that can isolate floor tom legs. Can you name any, because I'm not having much luck finding them?

  • Pearl makes a rubber tip that acts like a shock absorber. Not sure if they sell it as a accessory but worth checking into. I believe legged floor toms that are properly cushioned resonate more than rim-type mounts. it's a weight thing. I have my large toms mounted but considering changing back to floor toms.

  • Hi Bob, great stuff.

    TrashTalkingGuy:

My floor tom is on a really thick rug and the difference is still quite evident. What you want is to isolate the drum from anything solid. Rugs don't isolate as well as foam.

  • Thanks TT. I agree.

  • That was me, responding to TT. Thanks for the info though Bob, you're an inspiration and your videos are great to watch.

    Regards

  • Hey Bob I have a question.

You demonstrated how the floor tom's dynamic range is affected by the foam it's laying on.

Would laying the floor tom on carpet or sponges have the same effect?

  • Yes, to a degree depending on how thick the rug pile is.

  • ...the man even has a drumshell clock if look carefully :)

  • Yes, you are correct...I am a "drumhead"!
