If you read the books u wud know nothing or no one significant is left on reach. It was glassed by the covenant, and the remaining Spartans took a portal to a forerunner safe zone from the planet onyx. reach was an important planet but I wouldn't see why he would be there.

I think they screwed the ending, like its alright, but its not a normal one where we know most things are back to normal. So he's drifting towards an unkown planet, they are making a new Halo, but a prequel and Halo is a trilogy, so no Halo 4 and we will never know what happens to Cheif.
