its ugly because if you look how low his hands are in the takeaway, its so shallow. Then he drops in inside even more, and then uses all hands to release through the ball instead of using his body. but still it works.
I for one, am a great admirer of Fowler's swing. One of the things I like most is the position at the top of the back swing. Of course it's flat, but that doesn't prevent it from being repeatable. If you have read any of Hogan's books you will know that he believed that a golf swing 'can never be to flat'.
However, the thing I like most is Fowler's position post impact, the perfect example of a full and controlled release (which I regard as the most important aspect of any swing).

A lot of guys can get it around a course low, but still have a back when they are 40 years old. Rickie on the other hand, will not be this luck inless he fixes that hip stall after impact...
Not the best looking swing but im a big fan of using the swing ur comfortable with instead of molding it to a certain swing. Seems the most consistent players follow this and year after year they finish high on the money list.. Players that mold there swing to mechanically have flashes of brillance, aka justin rose and even tiger lately but when u allow urself to swing freely you leave so much more room for mistakes.

He is a low hand float loader. Which makes him a tremendous ball striker. His swing is unique not ugly at all. Actually it is quite impressive. Not everyone has to swing like Ernie Els.
I think he's really going to have a tough time playing well week to week with such a flat swing. There are a lot of things that can go wrong when you swing that far off the swing plane. Sergio is a wonderful golfer, but struggles to play well every week because of how unconventional his shoulder turn is. This kid has loads talent, and the flash to become a star.
Doesn't look one iota like Hogan through the ball. More lag than his post impact pivot can sustain. Flip city. Timing dependant. But then the swing is only one part of the golf puzzle too. If you hole everything you look at you can make almost anything work.

I would have him stand closer to the ball at address, especially with a driver as seen here. Also if you pause at 0:21 you can see how far his hands have moved outside the line of his eyes from address, this will cause lots of hooks . Otherwise I must as a golf instructor admit that his swing is balanced and has good rotation. When Tiger started out his swing was pretty rough around the edges too, all Fowler needs is a good swing coach.
lol I never realized how terrible that swing actually was until I saw it on here. lol @ him being as good as he is with a swing this ugly. just pure talent.
Not a very technical swing but great balance and he does the same exact movement in every shot so this is just one more example that you don't need a perfect swing to be a great golfer..
I really don't see what's so "ugly" about his swing. It reminds me of Sergio Garcia's, they both make the same move on the way down and no one says anything about Garcia's beside how spectacular it is. He's just creating a shitload of lag which is why he hits it a mile at only 5'9".
He's definitely not a big guy. I think it works for him because he has had a wonderful teacher who has taught him since he was a toddler. The swing has developed as he's developed and is setup to maximize his individual strenghths.
Yeah I mean clearly you don't need perfect positions throughout the swing to be good. As long as you can make a consistent move and you have a good impact position it doesn't matter what you do before that. I think he's swing is pretty badass personally. And they said he's never used video to learn his swing, I thought that was pretty cool.
@vinceo2b Yeah I don't think he actually has a swing coach because he's a feel player and no one taught him that swing it's like Jim Furyk's not people can teach that. He has a lot of talent and he told Golf Digest he taught himself, no coach, never read a golf book, and he only looked in the pictures of one once for fun.
@8cantrell5 Sergio's swing is ugly, the way he drops it on the downswing is so exaggerated. Its the complexity of his swing that is causing him trouple now as he gets older and its the same reason Fowler is unlikely to win a major. Thats just how I see it though.. Others may see pure beauty and I can respect that. Personally I cant watch Fred Couples enough. You cant tell if its a PW or a driver in his hands he swings so consistently..
@ollycopter his lack of being able to make a 8-12 footer is why he is struggling. Sergio is one of the better ball strikers on tour. But yeah, Couples has one of those swings I could watch all day.
@8cantrell5 His swing is what works for him and I like it personally. Has to have crazy good timing! Also notice how as he starts to unwind his hips, the shoulders and upper back are still turning back!
@8cantrell5 people trash Sergio's swing all the time. it is equally as "ugly"... but mechanically sound... which is why they are such good players. furyks swing is "ugly" as well... but hes still one of the best ball strikers ever. i dont think anyone means bad when they say ugly here.
Actually a one plane swing is when the path the club travels back and down, as well as the angle of the clubface at the top of the swing, all match the same angle/plane of the shaft at address. So its not quite a one plane swing. Tiger's in that swing portrait video is a one plane.
His grip is pretty normal, nothing unusual in that department. Anyone with a proper understanding of physics and geometry will know that the flatter you swing the straighter you can hit it. Flat can cost you distance, unless you have a naturally fast pivot. All the great ball strikers tried to be as flat as they could be with their hands as low as possible at impact....Norman, Norman, Knudson, Player, Hogan, Trevino, Faldo (new swing)....the list could go on....
@zenchili I agree. Too many people are critical of Ricky's swing. I think it is really like Hogan's and Ricky seems to keep the club on plane the entire swing, something most pro's don't do.
Just goes to show you there's a ton of ways to swing the golf club. It doesn't get any flatter in the swing plane than that but obviously it can work. The only thing the really matters in the golf swing is where you are halfway through your downswing. All great players are pretty much in the same place.
Most sensical thing I have read about Fowler so far in these Youtube comments. I agree with you. Results are the bottom line. The "rest of the blueprint" counts too but people do all kinds of things to hit the ball well, which of course is the goal in hitting a golf ball.
because we are buds. hes only 4 years older than me, he goes to the same high skool as me, we have the same coach, and we played at the same course as kids. i got his number in my phone, jus wished him good luck tomorrow.
thanks for the video.. i been looking for it for such a long time.. pls post more of this.. especially with rickie striking iron.!!! as everyone say he struck them with authority..!!! thanks..
Not going to happen cervantes8b. He'll be top 25 no problem. But Tiger will not be intimidated by his cockiness. I've seen Fowler dominate people simply by his presence, but the boys on the PGA aren't going to. By the way, tiger already has 71 wins, and he'll eclipse Jack early 2010, and Snead in early 2011. Tiger will break 100 wins before he retires.
I think he's going to do just fine as a pro. It is absolutely amazing to me how flat his swing gets. Although I don't recommend it for everyone it sure works for him. And I think most golfer could learn from it as well. I know I've been a bit too steep but slowly my swing is transitioning to something better.
Ive had the opportunity to play with rickie at least 50 times and he makes the best sound with his irons ive ever heard... i also take lessons from his childhood coach and i would be shocked if rickie doesnt do it on tour... he has the best mental atitude ive ever seen and its all thanks to big b( his coaches nickname)
just from that comment i know that youre a bum. what does it matter if hes flat. he phenominal through the impact zone and his ball striking is amazing. when you tear it up on the nationwide tour as an am then you can criticize
i don't really like the swing either. He also stands really far away from the ball.
Is that recommended?

Rick102667 2 years ago
@Rick102667 He did really well in the fall series when he didn't have his card. He's really talented. I think he'll do just fine.

Its such an ugly swing.
GolfKahn554 2 years ago
i'd like to see his grip
swingtrade2 2 years ago
His grip is pretty normal, nothing unusual in that department. Anyone with a proper understanding of physics and geometry will know that the flatter you swing the straighter you can hit it. Flat can cost you distance, unless you have a naturally fast pivot. All the great ball strikers tried to be as flat as they could be with their hands as low as possible at impact....Norman, Norman, Knudson, Player, Hogan, Trevino, Faldo (new swing)....the list could go on....

Will he be as good as Rory Mcilroy?
Answer. Never.

bergevan 2 years ago
its actually quite amazing that he doesnt hit any massive hooks with a swing that flat!
WestBromSte 2 years ago 2
i was hitting balls next to him on the driving range, he is got some extreme lag in his wrists, and struck the ball pure every time
chakenfangersaregood 2 years ago
flatter than paris hiltons chest
hendrixreborn7475 2 years ago 2
so flat you could balance a glass of on water on his arms at the top
KCGOLFER2010 2 years ago
I bet you guys his swing is pretty short here as well.
Make a swing with a short armswing and yours will look flatter too.
Someone find a face-on...

hav a waorse swing btw!

I dont really like the swing, but if it works for him then he doesnt need to listen to anybody.

seok053 2 years ago
Matt Kuchar's swing is also really flat. But I think Rickie's is flatter.

wow how hes seriously talented to hit the ball consistantly from those swing positions!
edwardreyesboi 2 years ago
He is really talented. I can't even get the club into those positions. I think hogan also had a very flat swing. Most golfers are way too steep.
zenchili 2 years ago
@zenchili I agree. Too many people are critical of Ricky's swing. I think it is really like Hogan's and Ricky seems to keep the club on plane the entire swing, something most pro's don't do.
W0weeZ0wee 2 years ago
Just goes to show you there's a ton of ways to swing the golf club. It doesn't get any flatter in the swing plane than that but obviously it can work. The only thing the really matters in the golf swing is where you are halfway through your downswing. All great players are pretty much in the same place.
sleestak33 2 years ago 3
Most sensical thing I have read about Fowler so far in these Youtube comments. I agree with you. Results are the bottom line. The "rest of the blueprint" counts too but people do all kinds of things to hit the ball well, which of course is the goal in hitting a golf ball.
paulski5 2 years ago
because we are buds. hes only 4 years older than me, he goes to the same high skool as me, we have the same coach, and we played at the same course as kids. i got his number in my phone, jus wished him good luck tomorrow.

Hogan had a flat swing too...his saying goes
"The flatter the swing, the fatter your wallet"
cgasucks 2 years ago 4
well considering tiger has made 1000 times more then both of them with an upright swing ide have to say thats false.
cjcollas 2 years ago
H.H. has actually shallowed out Tiger's swing plane. The evolution of a golf swing.
Paulie661 2 years ago
Well in those days the prize money was much smaller...Tiger said himself that Hogan and Moe Norman owned their swings..
cgasucks 2 years ago
Did he actually say that??

such a flat swing wow!

zenchili 2 years ago
too bad.. but if you happen to have one.. pls post it.. :)
and pls.. pls post more of these good quality vids.. thanks.......

Get ready golf world, this kid is going to rule the PGA/WGC etc and slow Tigers progress to his 70-80 wins. Give them hell Rickie!!!
Cervantes8b 2 years ago
mcilroy owns him
letsloveelp 2 years ago
Not going to happen cervantes8b. He'll be top 25 no problem. But Tiger will not be intimidated by his cockiness. I've seen Fowler dominate people simply by his presence, but the boys on the PGA aren't going to. By the way, tiger already has 71 wins, and he'll eclipse Jack early 2010, and Snead in early 2011. Tiger will break 100 wins before he retires.
pdxwilliam 2 years ago
Hey b4 u start callin Fowler cocky why dont you get to know him a lil bit... like actually meet him or something you know??
nxttw4sho 2 years ago
I think he's going to do just fine as a pro. It is absolutely amazing to me how flat his swing gets. Although I don't recommend it for everyone it sure works for him. And I think most golfer could learn from it as well. I know I've been a bit too steep but slowly my swing is transitioning to something better.
zenchili 2 years ago
Ive had the opportunity to play with rickie at least 50 times and he makes the best sound with his irons ive ever heard... i also take lessons from his childhood coach and i would be shocked if rickie doesnt do it on tour... he has the best mental atitude ive ever seen and its all thanks to big b( his coaches nickname)
nxttw4sho 2 years ago
When you say he has a great mental attitude, do you mean he's cocky or placid or something different?
moreneck1 2 years ago
How have you played with him 50 times?
bogeyhitter25 2 years ago
just from that comment i know that youre a bum. what does it matter if hes flat. he phenominal through the impact zone and his ball striking is amazing. when you tear it up on the nationwide tour as an am then you can criticize
