First of all, the playing is great, nice phrasing very crystal clear technique but sadly and this is something I miss in almost every performance of this piece, it lacks fire. Are they all afraid of the piano?
@masterofsynapsis Check out Khatia Buniatishvili's recording on Sony Classical. She has a great supporter in Martha Argerich (who herself has a lot of 'fire' in this great piece). Khatia's performance is my new favorite and benchmark performance. She is really into the emotion of F. Liszt and intense as ever I heard with the Sonata in B minor! Plenty of color and light & shade as well!
8:23 Heh, some Alkanian deadpan humor rather than the usual "intensity"... kewl!

I like how he plays slight accents on the weaker chords at 03:20, making it sound like "bass - chord - bass chord" :D

Fantastic playing ,close to the Arrau version. Both of them never disregard "the big line".

@masterofsynapsis Check Cziffra's performance, or Horowitz's from the 50s, but I suspect you already have. Perfs with ballz.

Heard this, now going straight to the record shop. Hopefully this video will induce others to do the same.
