@slickwing No, It is spelled "Styx", I agree with you though, Styx (band) is not satanic and I would be willing to bet that they are not named after the river Styx from the bible, but the the river Styx in Greek mythology. Achilles was bathed in it and held by his ankle making that his only weak point ultimately leading to his death, ( hence Achilles heel) But yeah that's my opinion anyway :D and by the way I am christian.
@TheDKing1718 Correct on the spelling, by the way I all so know Greek and Roman mythology. I am a very proud Christian, nice to hear from a fellow believer. Praise the Lord in everything you do.
man! listen to stairway to heaven in reverse on vinyl, with an old player when we had sound with manual reverse. i kid you not, when the song begins "and as we wind on down the road, our shadows taller than our soul" you can absoluty, clearly hear, "satan is my god, i love satan" i shit you not! i listened to it numerous times, ive let my friends hear it, and they freaked out! lol!!!
FWIW, i dont believe that you can sell your soul to the devil, it belongs to GOD.......
I'm really suprised they even bothered to address the backwards masking allegations. Especially to thier audience during a concert- strange. Killer song! One of my faves, and BTW, I've heard the alleged "backwards message" . If that's what you are looking for and that's what you want your ears to hear, you are bound to find it sooner or later.
@herbertkearse I looked online and it says that he left Styx in 1975 to spend more time with his family and have more creative control on his future endeavours...he died of a brain aneurysm in 1988....he was only 37 years old.
I'm seeing Styx play on Aug. 5 at our County Fair. I'm so excited I"ve liked them since the late 70's. Grand Illusion was the first album I bought when I was 11 years old. I had such a crush on Tommy Shaw too. I thought he was so cute back then. LOL Anyway this show is gonna ROCK! Can't wait!!
OMG Tommy looks like such a baby here, but time goes on and he's only gotten BETTER in every way! Met him about 2 years ago and all I can say is WOW. He's incredibly talented....always knew that...and he's really nice...(I got to play his guitar!)...but guess what gals? He's still got those beautiful baby blues & they're still just as pretty to look at! LOL I love STYX...what's happened to music these days makes my stomach turn!
don't worry kids. your advantage is channels like youtube which never existed in our day. you can look back at the greats without having to rely on your failing memory. although i will never forget seeing randy rhoads or stevie ray live.....priceless,
For those who have seen Styx now....you have seen NOTHING in comparison to their shows of the 1970's and 1980's....they ROCKED back then...Paridise Theatre was one of their best tours going. So was Pieces of Eight. Seeing them now is such a dissapointment. Tommy Shaw so high on whatever he is snorting. James Young is still good, but when you're missing Dennis DeYoung, you're missing the best part of the group. Sorry kids, you missed the best days of Styx.
Funny thing is, all the "Satanic" indicters didn't realize it was an anti-cocaine song, and the controversy just added to their record sales...and Head...how does this suck...because it's not Sum41 or Avril Lavigne? Don't be a Canucklehead.
@headforthetropics No, they actually sounded this good without sequencers, background tapes, or special EFX, it was 1983...they were just that good...had you been around then, before sequencer pre-recording and pro-tools eliminated either backing bands or the ability to play live, then you'd be able to appreciate this.
Well, first I'd like to say that I'm a 22 year old who's seen Styx 2 or 3 times. I saw thenm back in the early 90's before Dennis left and I also saw them after he left. They are amazing live, they do great shows, have great stage shows and sound amazing while live. Second, I just wanted to put an amusing tid-bit in here, this exact concert (intro to this song and everything) is part of a live 2-disc cd set entitled Arch Allies, and is both Styx and REO Speedwagon! (I know 'cause I have it lol)
@jeffuSG Why is it when ONE member of a band is gay, people assume they all are? You ARE, however, right about this kind of talent not being around anymore. No one can come close to bands like this now.
been a huge fan of styx since "cornerstones" album- any styx fans out there.. i need some help james james young released a solo album in 88 with jan hammer can any body help with the name of the album.. thanks guys
this band is so underrated. since guitar hero is giving bands their own game, lets see guitar hero styx. theres plenty of songs that could fill that game. it probabley wont happen, but im hopin. rock on guys!!!

Yeah, this whole album (except she cares) is great. Doesn't Dennis look so bored when its not one of "his" songs? I like Dennis, he was Styx, but dude, the others wrote some awesome tunes!
i agree about the album; i have my own reasons why i like she cares though. ive never had a problem with dennis's song, but between him, tommy and jy, they all contribed to the legacy of styx. and honestly, i like jy wen he sings. he doesn't have the vocals dennis does, but his voice had an interesting touch to any song he sang that ive heard.
James(JY)Young and STYX, played the Verizon Amphi Theater in Maryland Hieghts,Mo on 7/11/2009. JY lost a pair of designer black denim jeans while here. I found them, the designers name is Ray Brown, "It's a Ray". After contacting Ray Brown, he told me who they where made for, Kinda neat huh.
Styx is so underrated. ive seen them many times over the years and i have never seen a bad show. JY will always be #1 in my book, just listen to Queen of spades and you'll see what i mean.
At the time of vinyl LP, there was a trend of putting messages that could be heard by positioning the needle at the end of the record and spin the turntable backwards at a given speed manually. But nothing to do with evil...some marketing...there was a Beatles record where we could listen that Paul McCartney was dead...So many years after, these guys are in great shape mentally, phisically and professionally!!! The lyrics are inspiring...
During the late 70's/early 80's there were rumors that every rock band, starting with Led Zeppelin, (Stairway To Heaven) had inserted a backward "satanic" message into the track via "back-masking." In order to hear it you had to take an LP record & spin it backwards to hear the so-called "backward message." I couldnt disagree more. I saw them at the the world music theatre in Tinley park with Kansas. I have to say they sounded better than ever. Mind you it was the last time all the original players were there. But non the less great song great Chicago area band.
I saw Styx 3 times in the seventies; if you didn't see them then, frankly, you really haven't seen Styx. I never saw them after the "Pieces of Eight" tour; they lost their sound after that. I remember seeing James Young and the rest of the band at Peaches record store doing a promo in Milwaukee as their breakthrough "The Grand Illusion" album was just getting popular.
I'm so jealous of you. I'm 18 and really missed out on all the good music. Styx, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin; I can never see them in their prime. It sucks so much.
@SignusMelko Amen to that...I managed to see Queen + Paul Rodgers in 2006. NICE, but God, what I wouldn't give to have been old enough back in the day to see Freddie. Was able to see Styx in '96 and '97...but THIS tour would have been something to see! My father saw it, said it was the loudest concert he ever went to!
dear princeof.... i saw styx last week and i'm pretty sure they're in their prime if not somehow above it. and anyway my band is this style and workin toward our prime so you'll be around to see us!
@Princeoftrombones08 join the club man, thats why us young'un need to put out some killer stuff, or elseus true music lovers will be relegated to a generation of cover bands...
@Princeoftrombones08 I really pity you my friend, I was just coming to the age to understand music when those, and others were developing.
You can re-live the era though by watching DVDs, sadly I never got to a Floyd gig but I was rocking at The Valley twice when The Who were there. If you really like this stuff get into Black Sabbath, Ossie's singing and Tony Iommi's guitar solos are something to behold.
@Princeoftrombones08 I'm 15 I totally feel the same way. I totally love seeing styx now, but I wish I could see all the great bands in their heydays :/
What's cool about Styx is the fact they don't need backing tracks or anything. What you hear in these videos is what you hear in concert; not adding or touching up. I saw them in August and they were incredible.
I absolutely love this song. The second side of "Paradise Theater" is so cool with that rainbowy picture. At first, I thought it was a ton of fingerprints. :-)
I'm sorry to burst your bubble.. Styx didn't tour in 1994.... 1991 is when they stopped with Glen and then picked back up in 1996 for a tour... With Tommy....
agreed scanline. he should have sung and done so much more with styx or someone else or even on his own.could go low or high. very versitle, even more than anyone in the band. takes a good ear to know that.
Sold out stadium concerts as in football and baseball stadiums, those were concerts. Too bad ticket prices are so high this is not feasible today. You youngsters will never know what you missed.

Was able to see Styx in '96 and '97...but THIS tour would have been something to see! My father saw it, said it was the loudest concert he ever went to!

Never cared for JY's singing all that much but I do love this tune.
Saw him open for ZZTop with the James Young Group on ZZs Antenna tour and it was ok, but it wasn't anything to write home about.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble.. Styx didn't tour in 1994.... 1991 is when they stopped with Glen and then picked back up in 1996 for a tour... With Tommy....

agreed scanline. he should have sung and done so much more with styx or someone else or even on his own.could go low or high. very versitle, even more than anyone in the band. takes a good ear to know that.

james youg had a very powerful voice he could have done much better then styx but we were not ready for a voice like that till the late 90's
