By this time Fela's voice was completely gone, his sense of harmony also in doubt. Like most western Nigerian musicians who started out playing in foreign modes his Yoruba rhythms were becoming predominant, but without any disciplined harnessing of their possibilities. Still, Teacher dont teach is one of the most hypnotic of Fela's songs.
@Outreachat Thanks for pointing that out. Fela music came to me by way of an accident about 10 years ago, but since then I can't get enough of his music.
Right now i have about 20 of his albums and still looking for more. Peace.
@Outreachat I think what you confuse for a lack of "his sense of harmony" is a result of the effect of playing on a large stage. You might need to listen to the studio recorded version of the song to truly appreciate its seduction. It is surely one of his best arranged songs, and the studio version vindicates this fact.
@kolatubosun: Believe it or not, my comments derived entirely -- exclusively -- from the studio recording about which you talk. I listened to it when it first came out in 1989, over two decades before my comments on youtube, and came to the conclusions which I expressed in those comments. I grew up with, and also on, the music of the Fela generation; I have benefited from that rite of pasage, but I've also been lucky to be able to tell when even the best of them were on the decline. Fela remains an icon even in death. He was a prophet and was tormented by the evil forces that rule Nigeria. He spoke it as it was during his time. He was there when the Igbo people were being slaughtered by the Nigeria armies and spoke out against the evils of the british empire against people of Nigeria. Fela still speaks from the grave even now.
