well, I am atheist and think mindfulness being sold as a religious ideal is one of few reasons that it fails as a life skill that should be taught to everyone in middle or high schools. Aside from religion, in mental health, it is part of an FDA approved treatment for borderline personality disorder, which is a cluster B personality disorder, related to ASPD or NPD and to most people equate to "asshole" regardless so it is looked at a certain way and it could be taught in schools and help many
A UU minister lecturing on Stoicism introduced me to mindfulness: after prompting his audience to attempt to count to thirty, and to realize how quickly thoughts rise to the surface when we attempt to focus, he pointed out that this meant we weren't exactly in charge of our own minds, and then suggested that perhaps we [should] be.
Thanks for the video: this was a humorous take on the same idea. :)
Good point, Dalpaugh. Two points: 1) Mindfulness doesn't necessarily involve meditation. 2) With our illness, any extended retreat of any kind (Buddhist or not)involves considerable risk, especially any retreat with an all-night component.
To readers: The Buddha preached a middle way, away from extremes. If meditating, moderation is best.
You may want to be a bit careful about recommending Buddhist practices for mood stabilization. Last year while attending my second 10-day meditation intensive I snapped. The practice sent me into extreme psychosis that persisted until hospitalization over a week later. A bit of research has led me to believe that "meditation psychosis" is not uncommon. Much as I wished Eastern spirituality to be of benefit to me, I'm afraid it is forever tainted by my experience.
This video made me feel good after a long time
