wait!, then how do i stop breathing from my chest and use my abdomen more often because i know that a peson just doesn't stop using their diaphram bcuz they will die if they don't; but how do i stop using my chest area from moving everytime i breathe?
does anyone get this question? if so can you please answer it?
@charlie5698isdabomb A easy way to understand, for me at least, is to focus on your belly. Really let your belly increase, never being ashamed of looking fat while at it, coz it's just in the beginning
I breathe from my diaphram naturally now but excersizes are still helpful :) thanks for posting this. vidoes help me stay motivated. alot of people dont 'realize that while some people maybe natrually talented in singing it still takes alot to maintian a professional sounding voice. alot of artists sound awesome but end up losing thier voice because of singing incorrectly or not warming up first.
I'm not saying never breathe through your mouth, sometimes you have to. But breathing through your mouth will dry your throat and that's an inconvenience while singing, why do you think singers always carry a bottle of water around? Plus, it doesn't look good on stage haha... I say breathe through your nose and if you have a problems doing that you probably wanna go get that checked by a speeche therapist or an otolaryngologist.
I got to 35, these are really helpful, I've heard of these excersises but I'm self taught, so I don't go to classes or anything like that, I don't even excersise my voice I'll just start singing or sing something easy to warm up a little but I don't excersise or warm up properly, but now I have to start!
I think the lesson is great but a little tip for singers, don't breathe with your mouth cause the mouth is not meant for breathing. Always breathe through your nose.
@little0boots, I know, My abdomen goes IN too, when I'm not concentrating on making it grow out. I have a feeling this is going to help...I'll try do this.
to anyone who has trouble holding long notes like whitney houston and susan boyle can, i learned if you inhale through your nose instead of your mouth when preparing for the "big moment" it makes it so much easier to do it AND still sound great!! x
This video is very informative for teaching beginning singers correct breath management. The only bit of information I would add is that singers should try to maintain the initial expansion they feel throughout a phrase (whether it involves phonating or simply a breathing exercise). Overall great video. I'm actually showing this to my high school classes today. Also, don't worry about ProVox. Your video is targeted towards beginners, not advanced pupils and gets the job done efficiently.
this is actually very helpful to beginners. Although counting on a high note could mean more mistakes to people who doesn't know how to sing. Your back will not expand much to be felt by your hand though. It expands but not to that extent.
This is called "belly breathing" and is not the way professional singers breath for singing. Babies are not singer, and they are not yet fully developed. And this womans voice is not very good at all. Get your breathing for singing exercises from a professional voice teacher, not people like this.
all voice teachers will tell you to breath from your diaphram. All of them. If she is teaching elementry school music, then she was tought while in university to teach them in this way. Even my vocals teacher tells me to breath like this. Get your facts straight.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
No, all voice teachers do not tell you this. And just because she teaches elementry school, does not mean she was taught, or taught well. An since I have a master's degree in music education and vocal pedagogy and performance, I have the facts straight. Now, go get an educated voice teacher that was trained in modern vocal pedagogy.
yes, but here it isn't a university it is a simple guide. I don't sing professionaly and I want some basic instructions. If someone wants proper training he will go to lessons not watch videos on youtube!
Wrong is wrong. Simple, basic... doesn't matter, right information can be simple and basic. If I told you 1+1=8, that's simple. It's wrong, but it's just as simple to tell you 1+1=2. You also have to look at the ethics of people who are obviously not educated enough to teach a subject, but does it just to get attention. Always remember, there is no shortage of people that can sing, we just have a shortage of trained voice teachers that went further then just being a singer.
I have a master's degree in vocal pedagogy and performance from a university and I teach, this is not the professional way of breathing for singing. Many "schools" use anybody to teach singing. Professionally trained, modern singing specialist, like myself, are the top experts, and can spot a "poser" a mile away. Oh and anyone can open a "professional music school" which one do you go to?
And I am mostly talking about the baby on its back analogy. When we lay down, our rib cage muscles rest and since we are resting, we just lower the diaphragm and let it recoil back. When we sing, exhalation is the most important part of singing. When you teach breathing for singing, you teach how to set up the exhalation process and how to meter/control the air and air pressure during exhalation/phonation. Anyone can breathe in, but breathing in for singing is different.
yea i know... babies can't control their breathing for 'Singing' but the way they breathe is the ideal method, which is to breathe from the diaphragm. I know what she's talking about, like if you look at a babies stomach you'll see that it moves back and forth and that's how it should be. Ofcourse this lesson is a beginner's lesson. I did these excercises when I started singing.
It is not the ideal method, and 'v heard your singing- get an education and stop beleaving the first thing you hear on youtube. I have a master's degree in vocal pedagog- spare us all you uneducated backwards opinions. Some of us actually went and got an education on this subject. And quit getting your information from morons and babies.
oh thanks for checking my cover :), but I just started taking singing lessons this year (you can't really expect someone to be that good in a short amount of time). Nice, congratulations for your master's degree. Yea I believe you that you got an education, but would'nt you agree that a good breathing technique is breathing from your diagrahm and seeing your stomach expand, right? we don't need to fight.
No, you concentrate more on expanding your (lower) ribcage, and while you are singing, try not to let the ribcage collapse too much. You need to find you an educated voice teacher- not a failed singer; you deserve not to be yet another generation of misinformed singers.
Funny, cause thats how i naturally breathe.

@Bayww1
No.. you do not "hold your breath" you are suppose to release your breath slowly counting how long it takes before all the breath runs out.
