Top musicianship and storytelling from start to finish; everything about this truly evokes the West. My personal favorite version of tihs tune, dreamy and eerie.
@SirBasildeBrush My parents had a small recording company named Gravodisc here in São Paulo (Brazil) before they got married in 1951 and I was born listening to piles of 78 rpm's of various artists some Brazilian classics but mostly Americans (Dinning Sisters, Peggy Lee, Bing Crosby, Les Paul, etc.) and Riders in the sky were one of my favourites due to soft voice of Peggy Lee and the back supporting instrument keeping up the rythm (was it an Ukelele?). I was fascinated with it posted here.
Peggy Lee sings this better than Judy Collins, who just recorded it on her latest album, but no better than Nelson Eddy, who really bites into the words. And if you want to hear a really great version, in Italian no less, listen to the great tenor Mario del Monaco, on youtube. Thanks for posting this!
The woman that can undress you with a song.....what a great unique voice...this is a new gem to me.....and in Texden no less.....you've done it once more OLD chap!!!
i love this song so much!!!

Peggy Lee (1920-2002) was a great singer. Good art doesn't gets older. I live in Brazil.

Peggy's rendition is as good as Vaughn Monroe's, both superb, as only they could do!

@rodolpho979 Thanks for the interesting comment. Could be a Ukelele, or you could get much the same effect by soft finger strumming a spanish guitar.

I like it, but it seems weird to hear Peggy Lee doing a country song.

A good version but I think the Vaughn Monroe version is still the best. His voice just suits it so well and the slower pace too.
hawkmoon03111951 3 years ago
Monroe's version has a good 'galloping' orchestration, but he's a bit too baritone for me. I prefer Frankie Laine's '63 version.
