The Maritime and Coastguard Agency says coastguards and lifeboats are sent out needlessly. In 2010 the agency recorded 1,500 flare incidents, of which 500 were believed to be false alarms caused by lanterns, while the CAA says they also pose danger to landing aircraft.
Crops are also at risk; last summer in Oxfordshire, a blaze from a lantern destroyed 2.5 hectares of barley. Litter is also a problem, said the NFU: "The people releasing lanterns wouldn't dream of dumping rubbish, but that's what is happening."
Civil Aviation Authority wants a ban on the sale of the sky lanterns, which are paper and wire hot air balloons fuelled by a naked flame. "People have no control where they land," said Nick von Westenholz, government affairs adviser for the NFU. Dorset and Somerset fire service said it had seen a sharp increase in lantern fires in the past year. Farmers say cows suffer stomach damage from eating the wire of fallen lanterns.
People with a good pair of eye's can tell the difference between these pieces of pointless crap and an orb which fluctuates within different colours and changes speed.
thats nearly 2 minutes u spent pissing about!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! light it on the gas ring...lit and filled with warm air in 20 seconds tops..ready to let go outside.................job done!!!!!!!!!!!
I built my own of these years ago at a party using a dry cleaning bag - I used melted wax and paper-towel for a wick and pieced the whole thing together with tape. We let it off, it floated away, and people at the party thought it was a UFO and wanted to take pictures and send them in to the news - it kind of glows and shimmers in the distance and almost looks like it's morphing shapes. People didn't even believe me when I told them they are looking at a balloon that I lit off.
Skylighters Sky Lanterns are treated so that they will not catch on fire. However they can char enough to get a hole in them and make them unsafe to fly.
They fly until they have run out of fuel. So they will not land until the flame is out.
i love these it was so cool i was on holiday in thailand phuket potaong beach and i was staying at a new hotel gracenlands i think and it was the suncron festible and they took everyone at the hotel and lite about 500 of these and they all went up it was quit a sight
20 mins whats the fun on that, you should just take off the thing where you burn it and put some gray cotton with candle wax wraped around it and cover it with petrolium and it can staiy longer in the sky for like 4 to 7 hours
"One of the many, many paradoxes of the exquisitely mad Thai culture. It's a wonderful spectacle of light when the Khom Fai are released, freighted with metaphorical meaning; and then they lose altitude and come down once everyone is drunk or sleeping or both; they land on the traditionally wooden houses and burn them down. Every year, hundreds of houses go up in flames and many die. The classic Thai response to this chain of events is, "how sad, this bad luck."
DANGEROUS? Are you serious? Do you live to shit on everyone's good time? It's about as dangerous as a sparkler. Yes, if you are retarded and don't handle it with proper care it can be dangerous. In China and Thailand lighting of these lanterns are symbolic of releasing your worries. This has been done for generations and if random fires resulted during their festivals i think they would have put a stop to it a couple hundred years ago.
Of course they can be dangerous. They've been the cause of bush fires, forest fires, house fires and deaths, that's why they're illegal to launch in certain areas at certain times of the year. Think with your head before you get all emotional and defensive over perfectly normal and intelligent comments
"Yes, if you are retarded and don't handle it with proper care it can be dangerous." I just wanted to put the idiot in his place, it'd be like if went to a NASCAR forum and typed - They Drive to Fast!!!! The dick was asking to get flamed if you ask me.
So to reiterate, you light it FIRE people! If you observe proper fire safety it can be an enjoyable display.
And FYI, i'm pretty sure even sparklers have been responsible for "bush fires, forest fires, house fires and deaths."
Sorry, was having a bad day there, you're right though, they look great and in fact I'm making one. I don't suppose you'd know what I could use (as the fire) that would burn for more than 20 or 30 minutes do you?
They are made of a biodegradable paper and are not meant to be reused... but i guess if you had to get it back you could use zwdog's suggestion.... good luck with that though.

they fall down on their own after 15-20 minutes, and are cool to the touch
seph696969 3 years ago
Once they have gone up they burn out after around 20mins, the lantern falls as a parachute and the paper is biodigradable.
