  • This guy is a inhuman monster. I was in reform school for 4 years and I believe every bit of it. I saw all kinds of abuse, physical, emotional, sexual. They would make us fight each other. I have been under the care of a psycologist for years now. I sometimes just can't stop crying. I can't get the screams out of my head. I saw a boy hang himself. He was 12. They didn't even help him. My life is terrible and I have wanted to kill myself many times to end the pain. May God help us all.

  • Cruel and Unusual punishment. He just admitted enough here for these boys to receive a settlement from the State of Florida. Come on Florida, do the right thing. Whipping boys with a leather strap? Come on.

  • Especially when that strap is at least a half inch thick and has a piece of steel sewn in the middle (might have had holes too) and was swung with the force of a pitcher throwing a 90 mph speedball

  • It would have been great if the attorney could have got him to lose his cool -- that would have been awesome to hear the guy yell something like "I did what I was told to do and I ain't the slightest bit sorry for any of it -- I ate little bastards like you for breakfast and beat 'em till they look like I ran over 'em with a goddamn tractor"

It probably would have been the only honest thing said other than his date of birth and address

  • Trying to establish a psychological profile on these people involved...

  • When you say "aroused" how do you define that? (I'm just not sure your definition here -- it sounds like you were saying he was was getting his rocks off on it so much so that he had a heart-attack -- if so that is the epitome of sadism)

  • You the guy who got all those blows for simply saying something like Harvey Hoot-Owl?

  • This man is guilty of torture and child abuse! He needs to spend the rest of his life in prison!

  • He should have had to look in the faces of the boys he beat, hear them recount their stories, and then answer to each story individually. I mean in law if one accuses another of a crime, don`t they have to be in court to face the one they accused?

  • That would kind of rely on the assumption that Mr. Tidwell actually gives a crap about the suffering he caused. For all I know he may feel everything he did was perfectly okay, either because it was the rules, or because quite simply he was a sadistic fuck with no conscience

  • It appears that he feels no wrong in what he did, but I still think those he abused should have been given the chance to look him in the eye, tell their story, & then let him speak. He would either break & have to admit his wrong if he had any heart, or he`d deny everything & die w/a evil heart. Criminals always have to face their victim in the court of law. This is good & can be healing. Even if he could care less, the victims need to be given the dignity to stand before him w/their stories

  • I think the guy is so hardened, either due to simply lacking a conscience or due to decades of a job which sanctioned him and others beating the crap out of and torturing children and teenagers (and eventually developing an enjoyment of it) that he simply is not able to be "moved" by people looking him in the eye and telling him all the horror he put them through.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm not sure.

Regardless it would seem that the worst of the people at Marianna was Robert W. Hatton...

  • R.W. Hatton (I have almost no information on the guy other than him being an assistant superintendant and that he was rather tall, at least six feet) seemed to be the most sadistic and gave the harshest beatings of them all (though some say Tidwell was the worst).

I should note that R.W. Hatton is dead. I am glad he is dead (Sure I wish he could sit on the hot-seat and answer for all the shit he did) for he can never harm, abuse, or torture another kid *ever* again.

  • Hattan`s face should be published & any video of him should be published too b/c I think ppl should see normal ppl can do this. I was amazed that Tidwell came across as an ordinary man, not an angry, mean, evil, harsh acting man. I shouldn`t have been surprised since a Khamer Rouge torturer came across as friendly & shy not evil. I`m sure the priests & nuns who tortured kids in industrial schools seemed pious. It`s good to remind ppl that "normal" ppl are capable of hideous abuse.

  • Do you know what I think the worst part of all this is? Nothing changes! We had the industrial schools, then America had its reform schools, now we have foster care & juvenile hall. The stories I hear of foster care are horrific. And from what I hear of juvenile halls, there are still rapes & beatings. Special & mental health care also does the same to its patients. All I can say is parents hold on to your kids w/your dear life. Never let them fall into an institution.

  • That's true, I have a cousin who was hospitalized (bipolar disorder) and he told me once how they abused their authority and how he was put in the quiet room once how they not only wrestled him down (restrain, and then inject with sedative before putting the person in the restraint bed) but one of the workers kicked him in the ribs and nearly knocked the wind out of him after the others already had him down (granted he did spit in a staff member's face, but ironically not the guy who kicked him)

  • I did a search in the Social Security Death Index with the name Robert W. Hatton, and Marianna. I found an entry...

Date of Birth: August 3, 1912

Date of Death: April 3, 1995 (Age 82)

I think this is the guy...
