@MrzBrockz thanx! its a difficult song to sing but we have an amazing choir director who really brought out our potential which really helped us sing this song well.
I am in West Plains Concert Choir and we are singing this song as the first High School Choir to even attempt it in the state of Missouri. And I don't mean to brag but we sound awesome.
@kayjayleh ya it is a little soprano heavy, and the altos r hard to hear, but thats only becuz the alto part is so low. Throughout most of the song the alto line is below the staff. We even had to get a 1st tenor to sing the alto line becuz it was difficult to hear it.
This is quite fine indeed! They sing with beautiful sound and rhythm! The finest versions I have heard are two choirs from Long Island from the early 1980s--Northport HS Choir (Sandy Valerio, conductor), and, The Kennedy Choir, of the original JFK HS in Plainview (Ron Cohen, conductor--who was the real 'Mr. Holland' of 'Mr. Holland's Opus'). Hope someone from these schools posts their audio recordings here at You Tube.
@biegel88 I was in Sandy's choir, there aren't many on Long Island like that anymore! One day I'll get an old hissing tape recording of us up here. There are many videos up here of the Central Islip HS Choir under the direction of John Anthony, very much in the Tal Thayer, Ron Cohen, Sandy V tradition.
yes we did go very fast. not our fault, we were just following our choir conductor. our choir conductor tends to get really excited when we perform in concerts and sometimes that translates into him conducting us at faster tempo.
Quarter notes at 1:40 tend rush...also work on your "noes", they kind of sound thrown. Overall amazing performance! We are doing this for our winter concert.
First of all, I can hardly believe this is a High School choir, they are so good. We are singing this in my choir, as well, and I don't think we'll ever get that fast with it.
haha yea..this was my high school. we sucked at it until our director yelled at us and accidentally broke his pitch pipe bcuz he threw it to the floor. then after that we were SOO afraid to sing it bad/wrong
OMG! MINE IS TOO! we kinda just got to the part where we are getting good, and sounding good. but i'm at the same level as you are with the hatred of the song.
Wow! I sang this in high school and we didn't sound anywhere near this good. This song changed my life in that I first understood the meaning of Christmas because of it. It was arranged by J.P. Sweelink (and I think that is Jan Pieters, specifically.) Thanks for the beautiful rendition!
haha kind of true...unfortunately I am a soprano and NO I do not sing like that! I sing with a straight tone and try to let those high notes be relaxed. lol
it was pretty good, but hard to follow, and I didn't like the "noe noe noe noe noe noe" part, it's like if they were gasping for breath after each noe
matching vowels :/ the basses sound is REALLY swallowed :/ i agree with the above comment..there isnt much blend...and i heard some vibrato up in there...and u said it urself...its a renaissance peice and should have no vibrato :/ ur soprano's are very spread....a very warm and swallowed male sound and a very bright and spread soprano sound does not make for a pretty peice...BUT w/e...not to be mean or ne thing...
The men section is stunning.

This is good! - especially considering that it is a (usually horrible) high school choir. Nice joyful (ie, not lugubrious) tempo too,

@briang350z I loved the sound Sandy got out of his choirs--warm, rich and full.
