I think this might have to do with The new law on oil, it doesnt have the same levels of zinc and alot of people with flat tappet cams have noticed this. Try using an additive when you put in a new flattappet cam. Just a thought.
@peacemaker50cal I use Lucas oil treatment. I have done some studying and found that ford had oil delivery issues on these engines.. No big deal though. Thanks for the info.
My 460 in a '91 ford f250 did the same thing on the same lobe at 59,000 miles. It had nothing to do with the valve adj. as there is none. Ford admitted there was a problem with lubrication on the lifter galley and I got a new engine with a high volume oil pump. (It is NOT in all cases the valve adj.)
@Armistice023 Ya I have done a little research and have determined the same thing. I have 190k on it now, and I did this vid about a year ago. Surprisingly enough the same lifters on the same side are ticking again. I am just gonna drive it like it is... oh well.
In all cases like this the valves are too tight. You haven't proved the metallic composition of the lifter, so how do you or anyone know it's defective? If you have pedestal rockers, they must be adjusted precisely. They should slide sideways with a light drag with pumped-up lifters. You didn't mention how you adjusted your valves either.Perhaps the 460 has weird valve installed angles, but it was made that way for a good reason.Oils are calibrated for all engines new, and old.
@seapeddler I didn't adjust the valves because I didn't need to. I adjusted the rockers according to my Ford factory shop manual.. And I know these lifters were defective because they failed in less than a month. This failure of course was after all proper adjustment procedures were followed. Sorry I didn't mention the way I adjusted things.
My 460 did the same thing. The machine shop said that they have been having a lot of these issues lately because the oil companys have cut back on the zinc and other addatives in their oil. The newer motors don't need as much. So older engines are getting ruined.
@LakemaryDeuce That's interesting, I will have to research that some more. I wonder if they make a zinc additive. The interesting thing is that my engine is ticking again... Oh well. I also read that 460's by nature have an oil supply issue, the cylinders are larger than the valve train can keep up with lubrication wise..
@RoadWarrior72 i'm not sure if you know this or not but cams and lifters have a break in period. your cam and lifters are good you just didnt let the motor run enough. i put a new cam and lifters in my car and it did the same thing. 500 miles later (now) the lifters and cam are smooth.
they have a coating of some sort of pot metal over them, its normal for this to happen
@dnl5649 I had two lobes on my cam that were completely flat and I had at least two lifters that were obviously ruined. I am well aware of the break in period for the cam and lifters but the break in period was not the problem with this.
@dnl5649 Well I think what happened with me is that I put new lifters on an old cam to begin with. I honestly don't know how many miles the pickup has because I have owned it for a year and a half now and the odometer has only moved about 10,000 miles. I do that much easy in about 4 months... Plus I'm pretty sure the two lifters were bad out of the box.. Interestingly enough though, the same lifters are ticking again.. Now that's weird. I will do a vid maybe..
@RoadWarrior72 i did the same, i used old lifters on the new cam. i knew you were supposed to replace them together because they wear in together, but i didnt have enough money and i was too excited and wanted too see the motor running as soon as i possibly could. so its my fault i ruined the cam.
i'm going to post a video of it soon, and maybe try and make a picture slideshow
did you pull the motor out to switch the cam or did u leave it in cause im putting in a new cam and redoing the heads on my 460 and i dont really want to pull the motor out
No you don't have to pull the motor out. What I ended up doing was pulling the grill out and slightly bending the middle support bracket for the radiator support out of my way to get the old cam out. I was able to re bend the bracket back into place when I got the new cam in.. It was fun. I would have had that footage had I not lost my camera.
I put in a new cam, push rods, lifters and new rockers. I lost my camera that had the footage for part three of the video but when I got my new camera I did a summary video call 460 Cam Replacement Completed.. I would never have put new parts in with old parts... except for the mistake I made putting new lifters in with old cam... that won't happen again..
You don't mention whether you put new lifters on a used camshaft or vice versa, or if this was a new camshaft and lifter set. It's generally not a good idea to mix new and used valve train parts, especially getting used ones out of order.

@343ofFDNYsfinest Hmm.. Number 1 should be at TDC but you should also have timing marks on the cam and crank gear.

@dnl5649 thats weird, okay in your case its not normal then. it there sand or grime in there that could do that?
if you didn't put enough assembly lube in there it could be under lubricated and burn from friction.
im not sure, the same thing is happening to my car now, and i did everything right.
my new cam is completely scratched up and ruined! somethings wrong here

@dnl5649 Actually let me correct myself. I can do about 10,000 miles in about 5 maybe 6 months...
