If it's a close friend that says "fuck you in the neck" then I can take it as friendly banter (unless yelled at the top of his lungs with a scarlet face, as I might get worried for my safety). I don't like it when someone accuses me of adopting my philosophy part and parcel from someone else. It happens rarely (because it's a difficult charge for anyone who knows me to make with a straight face), but when it does it's almost always because they are flabbergasted at my not agreeing with them. When I declared I wasn't voting for McCain because of his choice for VP I was accused of taking all my views from the 'liberal media,' to which I now reply "Fuck You in the Neck!"

It depends, really. If it's a close friend that says "fuck you in the neck" then I can take it as friendly banter (unless yelled at the top of his lungs with a scarlet face, as I might get worried for my safety). If it's a stranger saying it then I just get the impression that he's a rude person in general, not worth paying mind to and maybe even get a sense of superiority. If someone questions my core values then I just take it as an open invitation for a debate and questioning his own values.

I think you have to take into account that a stranger who may know nothing about you may not have the same understanding you do when you say FYITN. If it were me I'd feel confused; maybe I didn't realize the ramifications of my words. I think what this comes down to is a question of what you're trying to communicate; Interpreting FYITN is a bit of a challenge if that person already doesn't understand where you're coming from. I would favour a more literal approach, to be told about my wrongness.

Well, since I don't really believe in verbal obscenity 'fuck you in the neck' is really just a bit of nonsense that says 'hey, I don't like you.' so I don't see the need to be but so upset about it. You could have qualified it with a counterargument or an explanation to give it more validity. I would be quite insulted to have my opinions dismissed as immature ramblings, however, and quite pissed off. So although you could have handled it better, I don't think you're reaction was inappropriate.

Let's put it this way.... Penn's response was on a maturity level equal to something expected from a drunk frat boy. The original statement was, oh, a quantum level more mature in nature. I think that means it qualifies as "reasonably mature". In comparison, at least. Besides, Penn's rant wasn't about the original statement, it was about the responses he got to his statement. And the responses he got were appropriate given what an ass he was.
