You should look into pacsafes. LOVED it when I went backpacking in CR.

Best piece of advice I can give is watch those bus schedules. lol I wouldnt worry about food though. During a 4 hr ride you usually make pitstops. If not, people will try to sell you stuff through the windows that tastes amazing. :D Enjoy!
