had my third today, tried to be relax and breath. the first pass through the esophagus is bad, but than really just breathe normally and be relaxed (muscles) and it will be ok. it takes just like 4 minutes. good luck!
I had one today. They put me to sleep so I felt nothing (Just the BIG needle in my arm), I wanted to see how is the procedure carried out. By the way anesthesia is freaky, I mean they can do ANYTHING to you while you're asleep and you can't fight with the sensation, is just a total blackout
I'm getting this done tomorrow, without sedatives probably... so as I hear here, it will suck... blegh! but then again, i've been sick for four months now, every day.. so be it....
I have had this done yesterday... It seems so easy on this video, but I will never ever do it again without being sedated. I have been gagging the whole time through and now my body feels like it has been run over by a truck.I guess from all of the gagging my muscles were very tensed. My throat is realy soar now as well.I'm sorry for those who have to go through this still. But maybe the advise of putting your chin to your chest and finding a way to breathe through your nose would help.Good luck!
I had it last week. The day before it I read the comments here. Huge mistake, I was scared even more. Almost evebody's exaggerating. I wasn't sedated but it didn't matter too much. It's completely bearable as long as you are calm and breathing through your nose, the only real unpleasant moment is when you have to swallow the endoscope...and yes, you'll have sore throat for a couple of days
I think it is irresponsible for BUPA not to detail the risks which are very real. Like a colonoscopy, this is a much overprescribed procedure (expecially by private hospitals who need the $)
@johnster1964 What if you need one on the NHS ? I must admit it does look scary but surely most hospital tests carry risks , and if you've have to deal with symptoms for years , looking inside is the best option as you might finally receive some relief.
first time I had it 2 years ago oh my god the doctor numb the back of my throat by spray I felt like I was suffocating than after few second follow by telescope I felt it moving inside my guts I would cough and cough I kept gaging nothing came out they told me to keep breath I thought I was dying. After the procedure was complete I was still gaging like 30 minute and my speaking voice change a little bit. I had bad experience and I told myself I'll never do it again.
yeah ppl this stuff is nasty if they don't put you to sleep. I had this done like 5 times already. Its easier to get through it if you focus on your breathing.
I had one 1 week ago. They didn't put me to sleep. It was very unpleasant(almost unbareable) till I learned how to get trought it - be calm and steady, breath rythmicaly trought you nose, pull your chin to you chest. Also try to lay yourself as comfortable as possible and think positive, it should be ok:).
people theres nothing to be afraid of...they put you to sleep...when you wake up, you wont even know what happened!!!...i had one done 2 weeks ago, i was scared as hell...but it turned out to be a piece of cake...if i ever had to do another i wouldnt be scared at all...believe me you wont feel or remember anything!!!
@reliablethreat23 I know right I was so afraid! It turn out to be all right. I thought it was going to be bad but it was good. Not all hospitals put you to sleep. For example at my hospital they don't put you to sleep. I had to get up at 4:00 o clock and drive for two hours for one of the best hospitals.
It only looks scary but in reality it's saving you from a laporotomy or helping to make a definate diagnosis so that you get accurate meds for that. Think of it as a blessing in desguise
if you think thats bad i had the same thing done today only its called a Pneumatic Dilatation thats where they put a ballon in there and blow it up to stretch and rip the muscle. the nurse it there to hoover your tears not your saliva
i completely FREAKED out before it, so much that i had all the top doctors doing it on me lol :P they sedated me quite heavily i think because i cant remember a THING. I had a sponge thing up my nose for oxygen and just before they sedated me they gave me the throat spray. I didnt have it done with bupa, i had it done with the nhs :) I had about 6 biopsies taken. The results were normal....all that trouble for nothing -.-
@jenniferthechoice I have to do this next week and they told me they're gonna put me to sleep because it's scaring me. Im in my very early 20s. I think im getting all that you're doing. I dunno if I'm getting a biopsy taken probably.
@2write2sing2dance you will be fine :) just make sure they sedate u properly and they actually wait for it to work because i had a colonoscopy done a few weeks before and they were in a rush so didnt sedate me properly :S
and yerr u will probably get some biopsies taken, i think its a routine thing :) It doesnt hurt or anything :) good luck :) xx

I had one of these and it was the most painful thing ive ever endured. moreso than the stomach surgery i got followed. And now i gotta go do it again 2 years later ;/
The dr had some other person doing it, they were learning and i think they did it wrong ;/ all i got was the numbing spray and i dont think she lubed the cam up.. i felt everything. it was horrible. hopefully its better this time around. def demanding sedatives lol.

OMG, I have just come from the hospital after having this done...
NASTY, Uncomfortable, I was gagging, felt that tube poking around in my stomach, Ughhh :(
I could only have the throat spray, cause silly me thought I would be brave and go alone, The sedation wasnt an option because no one was there to take me home.
I recommend, taking a friend and have the sedation option.
The only side effects i have now is major sore throat..
I did mine only this morning without any injection. It felt horrible from beginning to end but everything was finished in 3-4 minutes and I could go home.
Do Not Worry am Only 19 & I was crapin myself They will asked you to go into sedation which is a Very Light Drug to Knock you out. Its your Opition To take it Or Not. I said Yes I'll Take it, You will have a Needle In Your vein and Salean ( water & salt ) into your vein and when you go into the room thats where they will give you the medication to knock you out. You don't feel a thing and its like a 5 minute procedure. My result came back Normal. Most likely they will do a Bio-opcy.
how bad is this cause i got to get one done tommrow am like scared out of my mind cause i heard it can rip tissue ( on a rare occation ) when the scope is going down or there taking tissue from you
is the endoscope lubricated first b4 use ? i did this today and the doctor inserted the endoscope tip into a bowl of transparent fluid . i hope it wasnt othe patients saliva ?

You would ask yourself in a world with all this technology that there is no alternative for this barbaric examination. The medical world is retarded.
