The prices of many basic commodities in the 1980's were very little changed from the 1950's, which meant that anyone could obtain them when they were available.

Obviously living standards declined due to a relative lack of outside trade and limited access to spare parts and new technology, but to many people abroad Albania was a great bastion of socialism at a time when various countries were abandoning it. The description on this video is wrong its not from the 1970s it is from the 1983 May Day Parade and those people arent slaves they are the citizens of the Peoples Socialist Republic of Albania which during the brilliant leadership of comrade Enver Hoxha and the PPSH had no unemployment, no inflation, no foreign debt, no taxes and had universal healthcare for all of its citizens paid by the state.

@FriedrichHeinrich Yes there was no unemployment, no inflation (that's because they planned the economy, not because of economic wizardry), no foreign debt, no taxes and had universal healthcare for all of its' citizens paid by the state. All these things are great, but I would also love the right to criticize Hoxha and the PPSH when they do things I don't agree with, have more political party choice and not to have to live in fear of the Sigurimi.

@rukeye Enver Hoxha did a great job eradication religion; religion has always divided the Albanian people throughout history just look at it now you have churches and mosques springing up like poisonous mushrooms being built by radical religious fanatics from Greece and Saudi Arabia is that really what Albania needs and now in Albania you even have various other religious sects that have never been known in Albania before foreign religions of all sorts coming in to convert people.

The state told you what job to do (literally) and to get the most basic necessities such as milk you had to queue (line up) in the morning and wait for hours...He was a monster and ruthlessly in cold blood killed and oppressed his people. It is due to the long unfortunate rule of Enver Hoxha that left Albania behind in many ways..

At that time everyone had a job and now look all the unemployed people on the street. Healthcare was free and was provided by the state try going to a hospital in Albania now and you'll see that they wont see you unless you pay them beforehand. The prices of many basic commodities in the 1980's were very little changed from the 1950's, which meant that anyone could obtain them when they were available.
I'll happily talk about Albanian history, and I'll provide stats too.
GDP:
1950 – 1.7
1960 – 4.0
1970 – 8.3
1973 – 10.7
And that's just basic economic data.

@flori480 Throughout much of the 1980's Albania was exporting electricity to other countries. There was self-sufficiency in grain. Albania had various international admirers as well. Obviously living standards declined due to a relative lack of outside trade and limited access to spare parts and new technology, but to many people abroad Albania was a great bastion of socialism at a time when various countries were abandoning it. Radio Tirana was also relatively popular in the 70's and 80's.
