  • would you please upload a schematic?

I'm planning on making a pretty powerful coilgun,

but I've been having some issues with the capacitor releasing it's charge as soon as it's fully charged

  • yo can u please make a tut ive been searching youtube for weeks for a gun like this

  • Homemade proof of concepts are awesome!

  • did you remove the flash bulb from the flash circut

  • i'm glad you call it an attempt

NO i'm not a hater, but i've seen better.

    but it will do ;)

  • At school i rearrange the parts in my pen and im able to shoot the spring at my classmates heads.

  • kinda looks like a halo pistol ..

  • make an totourial how to make this

  • haha the coil is several layers... the first thing you should worry about is that it is magnetic wire with the coating, then the number of turns in the coil, then measure the impedance and then calculate the current for several voltages. Calculations and design are more important than the fact that you build some weird looking coil gun.

  • an AC/DC converter is a wall mounted psu, it often looks like a small black plastic block you plug into an outlet and it puts out anywhere from 5-15V. A laptop charger is a good example of a AC/DC converter.

  • The more batteries you put in parallel to the charger the less stress*...

  • @ charliedetroit hi again, what year/grade are you in? Anyway I'd stay away from mains hookups and opt for the circuit I explain how to make on my channel and use a couple 1.5v batteries, the more you use of them in parallel the less stress will be put on a single battery. (better charging)

  • @ConnorXV I'm a senior in high school. The project is for AP Physics B.

  • One more question: what kind of battery or power source did you use? I'm doing a project for physics and my teacher recommended I hook it up to a AC/DC converter. I have no idea what that means or entails. What do you recommend I use for a small single stage gun?

  • What kind of capacitor did you use? Like if I want to make a basic one mounted on a board or something, what kind/how many capacitors would I need, and how many switches would I need?

  • @charlieDetroit hey, in capacitors voltage supplies energy that will be given to the electrons stored in them, so the higher the voltage the more strength a capacitor will have meaning a 100v 10uF cap will have quite alot more energy than a 10v 10uF cap, you want a high (but not too high) capacitance and as high a voltage as you can get the camera flash caps have ratings of 80uF at 330V, this is good but increasing capacitance by sticking many in parallel improves energy load into the coil.

  • @charlieDetroit also, at the very simplest, you'll need a charging circuit from the camera flash unit, (i got a sort of ok video on my channel on how to make a usable circuit out of it) this needs a first switch to supply the battery voltage to the input, then you need a second switch to connect the capacitor circuit to the coil. so that's two switches, one charging switch (which should be an on off slider or flick switch) and one fire switch ( which should be a fast switch like a microswitch)

  • @ConnorXV Thanks a lot dude. I appreciate the advice.

  • Can you tell me the size, coil length and number of layers in the coil? I can only get my projectile (very similar to yours) to go about 30cm with a cap bank of 2300uF at 300v, got any tips?

  • i suggest using that circuit to make aluminum foil "combust" and shoot a projectile. you can test the principle by just short circuiting the caps on a peice of foil.

  • Cool

  • Dude u spend a lot of time alone dont ya?

  • can u send me vid how to make

  • Miniature rail gun?

  • can you make a high power sniper rifle like this?

  • @mrcrazybadaze in theory, yes you could. the system he has in the video would be very east to emulate with bigger ammunition and charge. whether it would have the power required for sniping accurately is another question

  • For those keeping score, I've only seen AAAA batteries come out of a very few types of 9 volts. Totally forgot to mention that(not that anyone would really take 1 apart anyway)

  • Just my 2 cents. I'd definitely recommend revamping the design somehow to get more output.

My only suggestions would really just be to try to up the input power, such as with AA batteries(or a 9 volt), or, reduce the space the batteries take up. AAAA batteries(they do exist), which you can get from an autoparts store, battery store, or some 9 volt batteries(should have 6, if any) or watch batteries probably can get the job done. That would leave you more room for other components/circuits

  • I could imagine making each of these components larger, fixing it onto a rifle frame, then using a projectile made from clips of wire.

  • I really like your idea of keeping the projectiles on the back with a magnet. If I ever make one of these things I will definitely implement something like that.

  • great video, do you have any of these for sale or plans?

  • can you use enamel wire for the coil if you are going to wire it in layers?

  • @Cardfold11 Yes, you can...

  • what is a joule?

  • i like it and you can make it better more coils in the coil and more volts

  • do you have a link or b.o.m. for this coil gun that you can provide to me

  • we are now entering the age of magnetism in terms of warfare ...

  • wow that went far i have an airsoft gun that can go through 3 pieces of cardboard

  • Woo airless nail gun!

  • that might make a good dart gun...

  • howd u get away with making that trigger without using an scr? mine welds itself together because the amps are too high

  • looks like two AA cells

  • look its shots electro BBBBZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

  • pretty nice

  • i could say for the back energy why dont you re capture it

  • 2 words = Sniper Rifle

Why? With additional stages you could make the projectile reach 120ft/sec which is enough to kill. With an all electric system it would be silent, w/o a silencer. And as battery and capacitor tech evolves it would only become more efficient and more practical.

  • @HauntingBull, a sniper rifle has no need to be completely silent as there designed for long distance shooting, even without a silencer the range there fired from is usually well out of earshot,i say if it works dont change it,and in any case if a sniper had to be so close to his targets that a silencer was too loud then they would be as well just to use a regular suppressed rifle,

  • @greatestgod Good point. Still echoes happen, as do patrols. A completely silent weapon is harder to detect than one that makes even the slightest 'bang' even when firing from ( I think top range of the newest 50cal is close to 2miles) you can still hear the report of the rifle. And if the poor guy is camped near a patrol and they hear him. Game over.

But I agree, if something works don't change it. But if everything works and nothing changes, how do we make progress towards the future?

  • @HauntingBull, how do we make progress?, well thats obvious,.....we bake cakes, hundreds and hundreds of cakes, delicious scrumptious cakes, then leave them to harden for a few weeks, wedding cakes possibly but the abundance of marzipan makes them inneffective in some situations, then offer them to the enemy with a smile,....when they taste there will be an awkward moment of polite dissapointment, and there will be no need for conflict, and thats it.

  • @greatestgod An intelligent answer as I have ever heard on YouTube. BAKE THEM A CAKE!! However, it has to be a Delicious Chocolate Cake..otherwise The Cake Is A Lie. (Some of you will get this joke, some will not.)

  • hey where did u conect the on off switch ???

  • It isn't that powerful but it is so AWSOME!

  • what the hell is that shit shooting a little toothpick, i dont mean to hate but its not that great

  • @phomie2000 How about he shoot you in the face with it? then you will know if its cool or not :) you try and build a gun that SHOOTS from start.

  • @phomie2000 THIS GUN DEMONSTRATES A PRINCIPAL.LATER WILL COME GREAT DEVELOPMENTS

  • awesome, now just get some poison dart frogs and you have a silent knock out dart gun

  • well done

  • very good and weasome

  • How did you make that? Tutorial please?

  • can u draw up some plans and post em

  • thats probably the smallest hand held coil gun ive seen

  • Is this guy in some sort of institution?

  • How long does it take to kill a piece of cardboard with this ? Also, how long to kill a human , like my little brother ?

  • Fuck... Can you put up a how to video? Pleeeease!?

  • @andyllamanipl

Battery to capacitors to solenoid. Done.

  • My Brother is working on one of these things, Except he's using an electric staplegun coil, It looks much bigger than your puny coil...

  • @TheTrueQwertybeef hahaha. Puny.

  • @trulynot It is puny.. Compared to the glory of my brother's one..

  • @TheTrueQwertybeef Your brother sounds amazing !

  • Where did the rails disappear to?

  • what gauge wire did you use for the coil. Along with for the switches? I keep burning up my switches and they all get fried.

I'm working on trying to make a hand held but having trouble on how to keep all of them situated

  • might need to cover the wires alil more...

  • what do you use for projectiles??

  • can you possibly give me the schematics for this contraption. i have seen this video 17 time just to see the way it was built and i would like to make my own. i subbed. please pm me a response. :)

  • @munkylad545 I imagine you take the circuit board out of a disposable camera and attach a coil to where the flash would go.

Now just add a handle and GG, you've got yourself a ghetto rail gun.

  • And a ciggaret on the botom of the handle for harsh times you know..

  • whats stronger a coil rail or gauss gun???

  • @IchigoCrash Coil guns and gauss guns are the same thing, and they have their limitaions because they need additional stages for increased power. Im pretty sure that rails guns are more powerful just based on how they operate differently than coil guns

  • @FrigginSmift

It's easier to squeeze a LOT of projectile velocity out of a railgun, but coilguns are more reliable and require less maintenance. At least that's how I understand it.

  • @FrigginSmift Actually, coil guns and gauss guns can be considered the same thing, but it really depends on your definition of a gauss gun. A gauss gun can be the same thing as a coil gun, or it can be something completely different working on the energy given by permanent magnets (usually made of neodymium).

  • @FrigginSmift but a rail gun would wear down much more quickly due to the increased friction compared to coil guns

  • @IchigoCrash

Mr Gauss was a German scientist...but he wasnt into weapon-developement. EM guns should be called Lorentz Guns. Would be more appropriate.

  • @IchigoCrash

watch my video its powerfull that one i made,

  • @IchigoCrash Gauss is a generic term for any Gaussian type gun and a coil gun is a Gaussian type gun.

  • @IchigoCrash Yea FrigginSmift is right, to have a powerful rail gun or coil gun you need a large amount of power and large capacitors. A coil gun is a Gauss gun but a Gauss gun isn't necessarily a coil gun, you see a Gauss gun is any gun that uses electromagnetic or magnetic means to accelerate a projectile. At most power levels a rail gun with usually be much stronger than any type of coil gun because a coil gun actually pulls the projectile towards the coils while a rail gun

  • @IchigoCrash Is basically a giant electromagnet and one rail is positive while the other is negative and the current flows from the power source through the positive rail then the projectile then through the negative rail this causes the projectile to become an electromagnet that opposes the rails which unlike a coil gun that attracts the projectile a rail gun repels the projectile. Also because of the energy that flows through the projectile it causes it to heat up to extreme heats.

  • Fun with magnets.

  • Awesome nice job! You might want to make it a little more sturdy though it looked pretty fragile.

  • lol that thing looks like a redneck ray gun from another planet.

  • @trafficjam10 haha. for shooting alien pigeons for stew

  • @trashbob LOL

  • Increase the barrel length to 30cm, add a coil every 3cm, and stage the pulse as the projectile leaves the barrel, so it is being accelerated faster just as it gets to the next coil. Exponential curve for timings. You will need a fair whack of power in a series of capacitors, matched in stages to the coils, and a computer adjustable timing program. But if done right, with a pointed projectile, it should have excellent range. Add initial stage rotation to spin projectile it'll be accurate then.

  • you are "friggen" smart!(like me!)

  • @OrangeLightBulbCat Make a video of it, or you're just a liar.

  • attach 2 hair clips to an elastic band, grab a pen place the elastic band over tip of the pen, grab old of the hair clips, pull and release it will go through a bit of cardboard like tht from 10m's away

  • or just push the metal through the cardboard

    JK

    Pretty Cool

  • It's a nice design!

  • Oh and I also sold one for like 2 dollars profit

  • I made something more damaging in grade 7 (bent paperclip with 5 rubber bands for bow)

  • how do u make the projectiles?

  • impresive

  • it cant shoot through cardboard? sounds kinda weak but still kinda cool

  • a metal body is not a good idea

  • nice pistol :D im planning on making 1 for myself, which capacitor should i use: 400V from finlands radioshack or should i buy a camera and take it apart?

  • make a video on how to make it

  • looks like a makeshift pistol

  • Nice. Though if youre not charging it with 330V your capasitors are too high voltage and too little uF for it.

I suppose you could use a converter to put 330V on 2-3 of these and youd have 3 shots with significantly more juice.

I also think you could do really well with perhaps 2 or 3 coils and have them blot activated with a small timing delay to accellerate the nail further.

  • Lmfao @ the pencil hanging out of the bottom

  • Awesome dude!

  • very nice! I tried to make one a while back. but I ended up shocking myself because I wasn't being careful... hahahaha...

but yours looks nice good job :O

  • um how many FPS?

  • i want to try this someday.HELPME

  • how to make it

  • tutorial?

  • ever tried usin cellphone batteries?

  • is that a pencil on the bottom of the handle?! :O

  • Isnt this just a little hilti gun/ nail gun?

  • Isn't easier and more efficient to crack a baseball bat over someones head?

  • Ill give you $50 for that

  • gay

  • please make instructions

  • What do you use for the charge? Is that a flash from a disposable camera? Do you happen to have a schematic for the circuit?

  • cool gun, but gay design

  • 1 take a dep breath

2 think of somebody you like

    3 press f10 five times

4 send this to 5 youtube videos

    5 look at your background

  • Oh, great gun!!

  • Make a long array of this very circut. Like atleast 3 feet. Then use it to fire 20mm steel rounds. Or railway spikes.

  • @peptobismol9 Falllout 3 much

  • you made a nail gun...home depot son.

  • did u just put card board all around the assembely

  • What did you use as a trigger switch? Using just metal contacts always creates sparks for me... Also, what gauge wire is the coil?

  • ca u plzzzzzzzz make a tutorial

  • i say go for a car battery >=|

  • looks like shit, but shots nice. thumbs up

  • how does that work? what is that makes that bullet be fired? is the bullet made out of magnet? and their must be a better way to maximize the force on it

  • @BillionNames The projectile is place inside a coil that has a current sent through it, which induces a linear magnatic field which is constantly changing. Essentially, the current creates a magnetic force which pulls the projectile along in a straight line at incredible speed. The benefits of this over convention explosive propellents is high projectile velocity and increased accuracy, due to lower recoil once you no longer have explosions going on inside the weapon.

  • Thats pretty sweet, thats the cleanest, most self contained unit ive seen. If you make the coil thicker or longer will it add to the acceleration? Will that require more power? Keep it up dude, make a full size, full power, rifle version

  • im making one now with 600uf but cant find one good video telling me how to make it, i understand how it works but i dont know what the curcuit is yet

  • Nice, what is its range?

  • It's ugly as hell but an awesome build!

Haha I'll need to make one.

  • dude, work more on it - i'll be buying one when its ready

  • isnt that electromagnetic powered

  • Comment removed

  • Very cool!

what coil did you use? Im going to build a coilgun myself, but with more coils, so that the acceleration is better.

  • thats awsome

  • its realy cool you should put some money into it and make it not so crappy lookin no offense XD

  • I once got shocked from one of those camera ones... it hurt );

  • das macht man besser mit lego aus

  • die sieht dumm aus echt scheiße die waffe du kans sowas nett

  • Simply scaling up the gun will make it fire faster, in making a rifle type thing with an experimental barrel reload mechanism. ( Gatling - revolver ) which will hopefully allow for constant refill unlike box magazines, and a repeated single fire unlike bolt actions/ muzzle loaders. PVC all the way! Lol

  • Instruct-able please???

  • @weeconnormac thats kinda meen :(

  • Congratulations. You've made a magnetic nail gun in a compact form.

  • that looks mighty dangerous hahah

maybe u should look into some electrical tape?? :P

    nice work though, 5/5

  • i would put some rubber or plastic over it so i dont shock myself

  • @sora4502 i doubt that two AAA Batteries are able to shock you

  • well you never know it would be safe to put rubber or plastic on it tho cus i wouldnt take the chance of giving my self the tiniest electrical shock

  • DUDE IL BUY IT!!

  • @canihave2bucks you mean you will make it... its not that hard

  • Very neat.

So the coil creates a magnetic field which attracts the nail through it...Powered by regular batteries.

But what other components are inside?

  • @Michel0555 hey man, just replying to your post i have made many coil guns all vary in power and size lol there are actually very very few componants all you need to make one is a switch, some used dispsoable cameras usually 4-20 is enough and your coil....and housing is u wanna make a pistol like in this vid but yeah it work exactly how you explained it buuuut the important thing to do is get the posative and negative correct way depending on which way u want the nail to come out haha

  • Thanks bud, but can u explain what the disposable cameras are for?

And why do u need so many?

  • Comment removed

  • makes me wonder if a railgun or coil gun is superior

  • I figured this out when I was 15

  • holy shit man ur a fucking genius!!

  • Hi,how many µF ?

  • 330V @ 480uF

  • @FrigginSmift and the coil,how many turns ?
