I learned it in a gym, but without the wooden bar and a soft pit. You should never fall down, if you have a bandage (clothers), which is good to keep your hands. And do not open your hands while do this exercise.
Did you learn this on a bar like this? Or did you train in a gym with wooden bar and soft pit? I badly want to learn this, but I don't have access to a gym, all i have are metal bars like this one.

when your body has a bottom position, you should make a good splash by your lags to the top (see how I start to do giant).

the width should be about 3 centimeters.
the straps will not peel your hands but maybe lettle bit, so you can put any clother between your hand and the strap.
