I have to say, while I am not the biggest Björk fan in the world, I am fast becoming a Matt Weddle fan. This guy is amazing. His cover of hey ya and now this. I wish I could have seen him on that America's Got Talent youtube episode. He would have gotten my vote.
This is a completely generic, watered-down version of an otherwise great song. It sounds like Goo Goo Dolls or something. I'm not sure I like it. But good effort, fellow Arizonian ;) Covering songs like this can't be easy.
Que buena version, magnifica!!!!!, mucha gente dira "son solo covers y nada más" pues para hacer un cover se necesita talento, no es agarrar una guitarra y cantar, vas a ser grande amigo....
It's covers like this that make you realise that Bjork's melodies are essentially good pop! She just likes to present it in a way that some people think of as 'weird'. I really like this version, very brave.
This Guy and his band are some of the few musicians that GET IT. Sadly, they well never be thought of as "groundbreaking" but they most certainly are. Any asshole can cover a song....but these guys make it there own. Music has hit rock bottom recently..... But is refreshing that there are people out there doing shit like this. Keep it up Obadiah.... you (and others) will save music for our generation.
@jgodd84 So true bud - we have x factor over here and its a joke I guess you have American Idol - music is nt a product that can be produced and sold as if you are sony selling a digital camera. This guy is amazing - he just makes it work - the hey yah version wow whenever I listen to it I always leave another comment
I'm not sure that making music, artists inspiring other artists, doing cover versions etc is about kicking someone else's ass. Although your opinion is as legitimate as anyone's, I suppose.
I am a HUGE Björk fan! I must say that this cover is awesome. I think it's great that you made the song your own and did your own thing with it. Honestly, being a guy, or just about anyone for that matter, it's hard covering a Björk song to match the way she does it. Björk is such a unique character with an equally unique voice. I applaud you for doing this song and doing it well.
interesting interpretation of the song but in my opinion it completely screws it up. the song doesn't any longer express what the original does. it is so soft and straight, the original impressed me with its roughness and edgyness. this here is merely one in a milion...total mainstream. and anyways, why would you ever change anything that Björk made xD (jj)
while yours is as a legitimate opinion as anyone else's, I don't see cover versions as attempts to 'change' anything made by the original artist. as to the OP's version being "total mainstream", I don't know what to make of it, since the band is still relatively obscure.
well im not talking about cover version in general. i love it when people try to interpret songs in their own ways but covering something doesnt necessarily mean changing everything that made the song what it was, you know ;) i jst think that this way of interpreting the song is shallow. here it doesnt make any difference what this band is all about, im only talking about this particular song, greetings =)
Let's find a better way to appreciate/enjoy/critique this performance. Where was he coming from? Why do you think he decided to cover this song? Why choose this approach to the song? What was he trying to evoke with this performance? Do his motivations need to be the same as bjork's?
@mafurock33 that was my guess all along, but I wanted to see how far you would carry your point. forgive me for having fun at your expense. I know where you stand, and I agree wth your approach.
are these guys big in america - hes got such a cool voice and cool take on the covers he does this guy / band is cool - being great musician is the ability to put that z ie zest into any song and make it better - have you heard the Outkast Hey ya version amazing stuff Bjork is cool too
even though i like the version of bjork better, this isn't that bad as i thought...his voice is really soft, and this is the thing, why i like this song...
I like this version because it helps me imagine my ultimate fantasy which is singing this with all my loved ones around a campfire.
p.s. i like that he did not change the genders here (i know for him its about god and not a lover) but one of my pet peeves is when people change the genders in songs according to their sexuality. i've heard versions where it is changed to "she". i feel it takes away from the purpose/implies an interpretation.
I'm not a big Bjork fan, but I love Mat Weddle!!!! His voice is amazing and addicting. I loved this song, though I wasn't familiar w/ the original. Good job, Mat! You did it again!!
my FAVORITE bjork song. and the bell choir mix IS the best version. AND it IS the one for the video. which is amazing, and what i think bjork does for vacations.
Obadiah Parker is widely known by the covers they do. I know they have original songs, but when is performing covers of other bands reveled as genius? He sure has a lot of talent but talent makes him no genius based on this song alone. Creating a song takes a lot more creativity and genius than just covering one. He is merely taking others peoples work and slapping a pretty sticker on it, which i like, but i don't revel him as any genius like you're doing.
I think the genius comes in the interpretation and the beauty of his voice. Let's keep things in perspective here. During the heyday of jazz and swing artists covered songs left and right. I wouldn't call that "slapping a pretty sticker" on anything. That's how those songs became jazz standards. The music world today is beginning to do the same thing. What's so bad about that?
technically it is not religious but sounds like it. its up to interpretation to what that song means, thats the beauty of art. i;m pretty sure she did not mean it to be religious but does sound like it is about god, i see your point. ; )
Let me make it clear though, that I didn't make the video nor played the song.
Arizona-based band Obadiah Parker did.
