thats some sweet shit! and you are right it does need a bigger engine. also, what if you had seperate engines for each track instead of using a differential?
thats fucking cool man, id love to build one of them. i have a 1/16 scale tamiya m4 sherman tank from 1974, dont know if id use it for the steam conversion, where u get the motor from ?
I bought a couple of old Tamiya Leopard tanks off eBay, complete with tracks. The good thing about them is that the tracks are metal, which help give the model grip.
you should really make two independent engines for either tread. then you could have independent tracks for skid steer. then your electronics would only have to move valves, not gears.
In principle that's fine, but for this model that wouldn't work.
The gearbox has a single input shaft and the steering works via a pair of clutches to engage and disengage the tracks. You'd also need to factor in size weight and cost too!
is it a kit? or is it custom built? anyway youd run one boiler, and two engines. youd save weight by eliminating the complex gearbox, and cost by having a much more simple circuit and only two servos instead of three.
It's custom - an old Tamiya tank kit and the body work is cut from sheet metal and tubing. The boiler was pre-assembled, but I didn't fancy messing around with steam at fairly high pressures (40 psi).
the chassis from the tamiya Pershing and a V twin steam engine...
Nice job :)!! I'm getting back into the world of steam engines and i might have a go myself- but with a bit higher gear ratio so it won't get overtaken by snails ;)
Thanks very much. I tried a higher gearing, but found the best solution was a more powerful engine and boiler. Check out the vid of the final version of the model. It uses a gas-powered Regner marine engine & flue boiler running at about 40 psi. Much better torque and RPM.
Cool

Is this the tank the Saudis are purchasing in Germany? It might be underpowered but it certainly looks the business.

@MrKleisterboy Das ist seinen ersten Versuch gewesen, und der Motor, dass er gewählen hat, war nicht stark genug.
And as for the original poster, that's very impressive even if it didn't have enough power. I'm anxious for the new one.

in stead of a bigger engine try not gearing it down so much

People that build Steam RC stuff have always been wicked in my view. Great stuff, looking forward to what is next!
unexpectedresult 2 years ago
Cheers! Have a look at my other videos, I built a version with a much more powerful boiler and full RC. It works pretty well.
questioneering 2 years ago
hey nice job, pple dont realize it but that takes a lotta effort to build, really nice job....it may be slow but does it have torque?
SpiderSnipe 2 years ago
yeah, tanks are supposed to have torque over speed, why do you think they can run over cars and crap like that?

TechUnadept 2 years ago
This is just an idea but did you consider routing the exhaust steam back into the boiler through a one way valve for longer run time?
cedartowndawg 2 years ago
steam powered tanks were attempted and abandoned in WWI for a plethera of reasons.
hwoods01 2 years ago
um, an idea; check out the doble steam car for power unit. conventional steam engine isn't very useful on a tank. doble steam engine should do.
