  • Soooo...in two weeks I'm about to be the proud owner of a D5000. I was a little skeptical about its video feature at first (I was looking at a Canon), but after seeing this video, I'm confident about it's film capabilities. Thanks, and keep up the good work, your vid is awesome.

  • I like what you've done! I'm learning too & you've already helped me learn something new!! Thank you!!

  • very nice, i have the d5000 as well and the film test really help me, this one fer sure.

  • Did you use a program or anything :3 . i really wanna know...If anyone knows how to upload vids from D5000 please help a fellow youtuber :D

  • Was this shot with the kit lens? I ordered this ANC us coming sometime next week:)

  • @BubbleProductions11 Hey, I think I shot this with only the 55-200mm Nikor lens and I think the camera normally comes with an 18-55mm one. I normally use both, but I prefer the softer, and kind of more cinematic, look of the longer lens.

  • Beautiful shots! Nice work. I shoot with a D5000 also, still working out the kinks of low light. The auto settings are terrible.

  • Very cool! Very peaceful..

    Make another? :]

  • whats the song? :)

  • nicee!

do you think the manual setting of focus is better then the auto focus

how do you work with the manual setting? just work with the lense?

how much are the 50 200 mm lenses

    i NEED help:$

  • gorgeous video filming & editing!! x cant wait to get this camera this christmas!!

    Thanks for sharing!! xx

  • don't worry too much, it still has good cinematography.

  • can a nikon p90 record the same as the start of this video? blurry then clear

  • This is a real beautiful evocation of winter !!! Thank you, nice work !

  • This is a real beautiful evocation of winter ... Nice work ...

    Thank you !!

  • i like it, it's very beautiful, I get the feeling. nice

  • i have a video with my d5000. just began film and photography bout 1.5 months ago. theres a couple blurry photos but it was my first shots. and the vide has a couple blurry spots i faded out b4 focusing on what i wanted, other then that i guess its ok, ive seen worse, any ideas or tips would b helpful

  • This is so beautiful ;]

  • make some more vids mate...excelelent photography n choice of music!!!!

  • I'm a total newb. This was EXACTLY the type of footage i was hoping to see with the d5000 and it's 55-200mm lens... why didnt you use the lens that came with it? the 18-55mm?

  • That was very well done. Beautiful!

A friend sent me to this video because I'm looking for a camera for shooting my videos for youtube and family still shots. I see this is from 12/09....so do they make a new model of this camera? Any advice would be very helpful. I need to buy one later this week.

Thanks for you help, and sharing this beautiful video!

    peace,

    Tim

  • @chessdude67 d5000 is the best for its budget. if budget is not the issue, go for d90!!!

  • I have a question. You know how you film, and it starts off blurry and then goes in to focus, how do you do that? I need help thanks:)

  • @xStevieVentura that's just slowly turning the manual focus ring. This camera only allows you to change your focus in the manual setting for video which I personally like since it looks more natural than using an autofocus. It might take some effort to get used to it though. Hope that helps.

  • @crevine HEy, ty so much! :D it's me Stevie BTW

  • cool!!! I'm also planning on making movies when I get the nikon d5000 :D

  • Hey mate, I am using my Nikon D5000 to make short films on here but the file type (.avi) for some reason isn't compatible with windows movie maker. Can you give me any information on how you got it to work? I am a complete and utter amateur with this stuff so any information would be valuable. Very nice video as well, I wish I could capture something like this myself, I certainly hope to soon. Anyway, thank you :)

  • @heyspacebeard Hey, I only used it for this video but didn't have problems importing avi files. I opened the program up to see if I remembered correctly and it worked. It even says in the "help" menu that avi files are compatible. Sorry I can't be of much help. Hope you figure it out.

  • @crevine Heya! Yeah it was my first time using the program and I did what I usually do and panic as soon as I can't figure it out within the first five minutes and end up googling it or something, or as with you, on here lol :-) But, just after I messaged you I worked it all out and have made a couple of videos since, but i've not uploaded them onto youtube as it's got music on them and I'm not sure how to get past the copy write thing on here. Thanks for replying though buddy :-) yaaay!

  • One thing I'd not figured out was how when saving the file as a video clip, how I kept the quality high like you have. It always seems to degrade on mine.

  • @heyspacebeard some music will slide while others won't. This video had a Flaming Lips song and youtube just completely removed the audio so I had to do an audioswap with their list of music. I used a Zero 7 song for a different video and it works but the video is blocked in some countries because of it. Make sure you hit "publish" in movie maker and choose the quality you shot it at. This video isn't actually at its full quality (720p) because I didn't know what I was doing at the time.

  • wow, very beautiful. amazing

  • The cat is beautiful.

  • nice job. @1:10 cat wants to be a star. lol

  • man, this is very good stuff. did you also use any kind of ND filters during the footage?

    nicely done!

  • no filters or editing effects (color correction, contrast, etc) except for black & white

  • wow this is an awesome video, almost like a pro..this video is kind of whimsical, love it!

  • what lens are you using pls?

  • I only have the two basic lenses. This was shot entirely with the telephoto one: Nikkor 55-200mm lens

  • your first time? wow! your a pro. this is great photography! 5 stars man.

  • whats the name of music?

  • Really good video

  • "A Meaningful Moment Through a Meaning(less) Process" by Stars of the Lid

  • i love the song!! whats the name

  • beautifully

  • BTW your framing is beautiful. I love film through shots (I don't even know if that's the official term).

  • nice work! Did you do the stair stepping removal?

  • thanks and no, I didn't use stair stepping removal. I had to look up what you were talking about and I'll probably be looking around for more information about how to do it just to see the difference. I have this in 720p on my computer and dvd and have been impressed by the resolution, but I'll probably try to use stair stepping removal to compare it. Thanks for bringing it up.

  • Wow, then I am impressed. How do you like the D5000? I am considering it since it is so inexpensive. Is it difficult to focus with the LCD? I ask because the LCD of that camera has a fairly low resolution. Also, what lens did you use? Thanks for letting me ask all these questions!

  • It's my first DSLR and although I know it's still kind of an entry level camera I really love it. I got it to take photos for drawing references but have been using it a lot lately for video. I haven't had any real problems manually focusing that I can recall. I shot this entirely with the 55-200mm lens (I only have that and the standard 18-55mm lens), although I regret it for a few shots at the end since I had difficulty rack focusing smoothly completely zoomed in. I need to practice more.

  • sorry i didn't say what type but it's a nikkor lens

  • How far in were you zoomed on the cat? Looks like you did decent hand held with the VR on that shot. I am going to go get this kit with that lens I think.

  • I think I was zoomed in nearly all the way and I think it was a bit difficult with that shot b/c I had to raise the camera above me b/c of the range of that lens (that's why one of his eyes isn't in focus - should have used the 18-55mm for that shot as well). The 18-55mm Nikkor lens can provide tighter framing for objects within a shorter distance like that shot. The first two shots were the only hand-held ones & were shot earlier when I wasn't planning on making a video.

  • @crevine what song/melody did you use?

  • I think I was too lazy to search for it in the audioswap when someone asked me earlier but I did manage to find it pretty easily. It is a really nice minimalist song. Song: "A Meaningful Moment Through a Meaning(less) Process" Artist: "Stars of the Lid" Length: 4:32 (in case you plan on using it with a video). It's in the Easy Listening section of the audioswap.

  • this is amazing! :) i just got the D5000 my self! and im loving the camera! i will post videos on my channels as you do, some short cool shorts, im new to the video thing :) i was woundering what music is that? that was amazing! :)

  • I'm not really sure what the music is because I had to do an audioswap since I originally used an instrumental song from The Flaming Lips. And in response to someone's earlier comment, the resolution of this video is not actually as good as it can be since I realized that I rendered it in a lower quality than 1280x720. I have another version on my computer in that quality and it looks even better.

  • I'm trying to reply to allanobe with this comment but it wasn't showing up as a reply. Anyways, someone else asked me about the song and I actually took the short time to look it up if you're still interested. "A Meaningful Moment Through a Meaning(less) Process" by Stars of the Lid (it's in the Easy Listening category for an audioswap). Sorry for my lazy reply a while ago

  • thats okay! :D thank you soo much for your reply! i love music like that you see :)

  • nice shots. I got this camera a couple weeks ago and used the same program to edit my test video , check it out when you have the time dude. Once again good job. I'm also still learning all the tweaks of the camera.

  • Really nice : )

  • yo what do u use to edit..?

  • I just used Windows Movie Maker for this which is really simple. It was unfortunately glitchy, which I'm not sure is my computer's fault or the software. My friend and I are currently testing out iMovie, although I just got Sony Vegas Pro 9 (expensive! but professional) which I'll most likely be using on everything moving forward. If you have a Mac and just want to edit something like this I would definitely suggest using iMovie (I have a Windows).

  • really excellent results for the first effort. some interesting shots.

i'm buying this camera in 10 days and this kind of video is exactly what i want it for. videos between 2-4 minutes with very little camera movement while shooting.

    thanks for uploading.

btw, how is the image quality from pictures?

  • The picture quality is excellent and professional looking so long as you know what you're doing. Even though I know a bit about the manual settings, I'm not confident enough yet to break away from the point and shoot settings (although there's a lot of settings for whatever subject you're shooting).

  • Thanks Crevine!

  • wow. nice man! i just orderd my nikon d5000 a couple of days ago. cant wait to make videos like you!

  • Good Video, Good Edtion!!! wooow Crongratulation!

  • good work!! I have this camera too. How did u edit this one? What software? What is the resolution? 720p or 576? How did u manage to edit this on your computer? Because mine was lagging. Thanks!!! good work!!

  • Thanks for being the first to comment. In the info section I wrote about using Windows Movie Maker which is pretty basic but nice for a simple project like this. Unfortunately, my videos were lagging in the editing window which I think threw off at least one or two edits that were supposed to be rhythmically matched to a beat with the original song that I used (not the one in this video). I used the highest video quality setting which gives you 5 minutes (720).

  • I should add that if you're still learning about this camera and the video settings as I am, you should lock the exposure when shooting video. I didn't figure out how to until after I shot this, but this video wasn't affected by it since I didn't use camera movements. What I mean is that when you pan or the lighting changes (especially noticeable around windows) the camera constantly auto adjusts for the lighting which makes it look amateurish. Hope this helps.

  • Yeah, that looked great! Thanks for the tip about the exposure. But how do you lock it? Do you activate it by pressing it once or do you have to press it in throughout the movie?

  • In the normal setting you would have to hold the AE-L AF-L button but you can change it so that you only have to push it once and it'll lock throughout that shot. Go to the Custom Setting Menu and then the f Controls menu. Go to f2 Assign AE-L/AF-L Button and then select AE lock (Hold). Start shooting in the video mode and click the button to lock the exposure of the shot to whatever is in the frame at that time. Hope this helps.
