So TRUE!!! When I heard "Velvet Chains" I heard that phenomenal voice, hearing him in person, OH MY, I too do not know why he didn't make it BIG. Bette Midler, I agree, butcher. I have heard Seena Easton, so so or less. Gary, I have always loved you & wish you the BEST forever!!!
Gary Morris sang it first. His version is far superior to any other. I saw him sing this in person and his voice is so phenomenal. I can't believe he was not more popular.
Sorry! I guess al caps means shouting? LOL! Passionate is a better word for it ;-) I could not agree with you more ~ chills is such a great description. The said thing is it is very hard to find his music anywhere anymore. I live in the Phoenix area so If you have some good suggestions, let me know...
NO ONE EVER HAS COME CLOSE TO RECORDING THIS SONG AS WELL AS GARY MORRIS HAS!!! I WAS ABSOLUTELY SICK WHEN BETTE MIDLER WON AN AWARD FOR HER RENDITION OF IT. SHE ABSOLUTELY BUTCHERED THE SONG ~ WERE THE JUDGES TONE DEAF? HE HAS ONE OF THE BEST VOICES I'VE EVER HEARD IN MY LIFETIME! HE SLAYS EVERY SONG HE HAS EVER DONE! KEEP ON SINGING GARY!!! YOU ARE LOVED AND WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!
@juliesenter I agree with you, even if you're shouting at us...lol. I think Bette should just stick to show tunes because that's all she's good at. Gary's version gives me chills & makes me close my eyes and just enjoy the song.
@juliesenter ??????? You think Bette Midler butchered this song?????? I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion.... Well, to me.. in my opinion this version is adequate at best.. I see there is a version by Sheena Easton... so I will go listen to it... but right now... Bette Midler is the best...
Fantastic. O o O I love it. But I prefer sheena. Sometimes you connect a song to a curtain person. This belongs to Bettle Midler. See is a nice a flamboyant person.
This man must have its credit. It really an amazing beautiful strong flawless version!
@littlefuzz4 You are absolutely right. Garys version came out first and was so awesome to listen to. I now cringe every time that Midler sings her version - she butchered it up completely
@lknorris as much as i LOVE gary, he did not compose this song. larry henley and jeff silbar get THAT credit. however, for my money, no one ever performed it like gary. i suggest to everyone to audition the studio recording. it will blow you away. it was that recording that i heard by chance one night on the radio that introduced me to gary. i have enjoyed his music ever since.
I totally agree....Gary Morris's rendition of 'Wind Beneath My Wings' is the best one out there....as a matter of fact, he's one of the best singers I've ever heard!! I saw him in Les Miserables and he was amazing...I LOVE his "Why Lady Why" album which I think would be considered country...it doesn't get any better than that! I wish he'd tour...I'd love to see him again. :)
Me enamoré de esta canción escuchando a Sheena Eston, ella la cantaba con pasión, amor y gran sensibilidad, extraño no ver mas interpretando esta maravillosa canción. THIS Is the best version of this song, although BJ Thomas has a good version too. One of the best voices ever. If anyone could find second hand heart that would be great
Like a lot of other performers, singers, etc., one person is better known but someone else had another, often better version. Didn't Lucille Ball get the credit for being the queen of comedy, when she took a lot of the characterization and appearance of Lucy Ricardo from Eve Arden, Joan Davis and Katharine Hepburn?
Bette might sing good, but it doesn't even come close to Gary Morris, especially when he sings good while playing a guitar. This version is hands down better. Just wish it were better in sound quality.
Someone in the 80's told me of a much better version by a male singer than Middlers, but she could not remember his name. Obviously this is it, she was right. I am speachless! His interpretation and emotion nearly oozes from his vioce. I can not say that about any other I have heard. My only complaint is the quality of audio on this video. Is there better recording available?
Thankyou You know when Momma died everyone asked what are your requested for her funeral? I said she would want Gary Morris to sing. They all after not being there in hospice I might add, said don't count on it. I said you asked, you came! @Sandy2ization Please accept my condolences about your mother. I've heard that great people never forget where they came from, it sounds like Morris is indeed that. God Bless you and your mother! Best Regards.

Wikipedia: Wind Beneath My Wings" is the title of a pop song written by Larry Henley and Jeff Silbar.[1] First recorded in 1982 by Roger Whittaker, then a country music hit for Gary Morris in 1983, it was covered six years later by Bette Midler. Morris' original was a Top Ten country hit, and it won the Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association Song of the Year awards that year. Midler's was a Number One Billboard Hot 100 hit which also won her a Grammy Award in 1990.
I like Gary's version but I love Ann Jillian as she sang this song for our troops on a very old Bob Hope USO show in the Gulf War on TV and wow! Ann sings her arrangement of it that makes me cry - she;s awesome! Thanks for posting.
Saw Morris tonight at Threatte Center in Lakeland, Georgia; he gave a great performance and his rendition of his song was phenomenal. He was right-on on all the songs that he sang and a really good entertainer.
This is a good version, although i personally perefer Sheena Easton's version, cried for about an hour after hearing. Didnt at this version, although thats probably beacuse Im all cried out over this song. Love this versionx
sarahsmiffy07: I just watched Sheena Easton's version based on your comment. I agree it is very good. I prefer this one. But i certainly can see how you would prefer Easton's. She does it very well also.
NO ONE can sing this song like Gary Morris, No one!!! It's been his biggest hit for over 20 years, and around comes the new generation to love it too.
NO ONE sings this song with such passion and feelings! Gary is the master! Any cover after him has fallen short...no matter how good it is! I've seen Gary perform many times and would love to see him again! He's the best....with a voice from the gods!
NO ONE sings this song with such passion and feeling!! He is the master! Have seen him perform many times and would go see him! He has voice from the gods!!
I kind of understand what you mean, Whitney has a perfect voice, no doubt. But for those who have listened to Dolly for a while, and have understood why she wrote the song, it takes on a different interpretation, which reveals its' own beauty. Of course, this is entirely subjective so there can be none "better" than the other. I guess thats the magic of interpretation.
This is the best version of the song. Hands down. It reminds me of how Whitney Houston got all the credit for "I Will always love you" when we all know it belongs to Dolly. And also when Willie ripped off "You were always on my mind" and it belongs to the King Elvis, who sang that song so beautifully. Willie chopped it apart. Gary Morris' voice never fails to deliver!
I was fortunate enough to have met gary in 97. These clip don't do him justice. He is an incredible vocalist that can sing full voice and in his head resulting in a dynamic sound quality that is unmatched by anyone trained or untrained.
I agree with you about Gary singing the best version of this song. I think Willie may have written "You were always on my mind". We should cut him a little slack.
I bet that wayne thompson - mark james - johnny christopher jr, who won an grammy as writers of the song "You Were Always on My Mind." might be surprised that Willie gets the credit. I believe the first person to record it was Brenda Lee, then Elvis. Willie didn't record it until long after Elvis's death.
That is an amazing, heartfelt performance! I must say, it's never easy to beat the original!! Much respect to Bette. And that falsetto!! wow...wonderful!
this one is the greatest that i ever heard from either bette midler or sonata arctica. paul potts also gives one of the greatest version that i have encountered in.
It is so obvious this version blows away the Bette Midler version, and it used to tick me off how hers became the biggest hit that everyone knows when Gary Morris is by far the greater vocalist.
I will agree that Gary's version it totally the best by far, but I disagree with those who say Bette "stole" it. People sing others songs all the time, and not for the intention of trying to better the previous or original singer. MANY do it as a tribute and/or to get the music heard again by a different genre or generation.
Thanks for this comment as I agree with you and in particular don't see a reason to disparage anybody else when making comparisons either. I think we can agree the more Gary Morris's songs out there the better.
I remember watching Nashville Now about 1989 and Gary Morris was the guest host and the writer of wings was one of the guest. Well offcource one of the main topics was Wings and Midlers rendition, and I think Gary was sortta ofended that Midlers won big awards and Gary then asked, but whos version made more mony. Well the song writer just sat there looking at the camera like he didn't here the question. I couldn't beleave that Gary asked that Question. Gary's is better ofcource.
It's wheter Gary' song nor is it Bette's. The original and best version is from Roger Withacker. But i like them all - also Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version is great.
WOW!!! I am SO glad to hear others agree that this IS Gary's song and Bette Midler stole it and hers is terrible!! We saw Gary in West Palm Beach in the early 80's at least three times at Country Fairs and I was blown away!! I told everyone that this man belonged on Broadway and I surely was right. I Adore him and do not respect Midler at all for trying to make thisd her song. It belongs to Gary Always!
Title of this needs to be changed to Wind Beneath My Wings. This is NOT the theme of the movie, this is the original singer and vesion and should not be connected to the movie. As a matter of fact, Gary gets pretty upset when this song is connected to her and the movie.
When Gary appeared on the Johnny Carson Show he sang this song. That version on the Carson show was without a doubt the best. He sang it purrrr-fectly
@michaelr595 i share your anger and frustration, but this is the world of "song stylists". they record songs written by other people. frank sinatra was a song stylist. in this case, bette midler was the more successful artist. gary has been ignored consistently by the industry throughout his career. unfortunately, the most talented artists are not the ones who succeed.
Looked it up and the song was first offered to Kenny Rogers around 1981. Both Sheena Easton and Roger Whitaker had 1982 versions with little success. Lou Rawls, Gary Morris,B.J. Thomas, Perry Como, Michael Ball, Lee Greenwood, Willie Nelson, Kiki Carter, Nana Mouskouri, Sonata Arctica, Judy Collins, Colleen Hewett, Kris Shay, Gladys Knight & the Pips and many others. Midler cut it in 1990.
Actually, the 1st time I heard this song was in 1983 when Johnny Bench retired. When Johnny was being paraded around the ballfield, this song was blaring on the PA system. The singer was Lou Rawls and it starts out with Lou talking then picks up the pace. Quite a bit faster than Morris or Midler. Give a listen to sometime.
Thank you so much for posting this. There is nothing like Gary and just his guitar. Talent. How I would love to see him singing again. This is wonderful. If you have anything else of his PLEASE post them. Thanks and God bless.
Gary brought this out in 1983 it reached #4 in the billboard country charts. The recorded single did not have the melodic pace and falsetos, Gary perfected the song through concert performances, it is still probably his most remembered song although he had many chart songs chart higher and five that climbed to # 1 . Bette didnt record the song till 1988 and I remember the first time I herd it on the radio I said whats she doing singing that Gary Morris song it stinks. Lee Greenwood did it to.
Thanks for the accurate history hokahey63. I know when I taped this performance, at that time, Bette Midler had her version out. I agree, Gary's is much better.
pctdad: He did this before Bette? I did not know that. I know this is the first video I taped (VHS) when I started compiling a library of videos. THat's interesting. THanks for the information. mtrott1
You know, the thing about this is that he performed this version when the song was still "Bette Midler's". It shows his true talent to take that "Standard" and put this spin on it to make it his own while Bette's was still at the top. Sorry Bette, but this is much, much better. Bette Midler is extremely talented in her own right, but Gary wins the gold on this one.
This is his song - and he is the very best!!!

Simply the BEST. This performance really takes me back. Incredible voice.

I used to belong to his fan club years ago. Such a sultry voice. Doesn't get any better than this.

He sang it purrrr-fectly

this is his song not betts. he did this long before she stole it, like shes stolen every song she does.

Gary won both the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music Song of the Year Awards for this song... in either '83 or '84

THanks for the information. mtrott1

Actually, Gary recorded this long before Bette did. I love her but this is the definitive version of this song!
