if i got a yamaha raptor that has a clutch lever, do i have to use the clutch lever, or at a stop shift in first without touchin the gas, then go then from there i shift up but if i revved up the engine and let go of the gas could i shift up or down without breaking the engine or? could i drive without using the clutch? how does it work?
@thegarebel17 some of us call everything a bike. Especially down here in the south. 4-wheeler? Bike. 3-wheeler? Bike. Dirt bike? Bike. Bicycle? Bike.
Good video man. But if someone is new to riding a clutch then their best bet would be to use the clutch all the time lol. It's hard for newbies to read the rpms like how we who have been riding forever can
It's not bad at all I do it All the time it doesn't effect your gears I only use clutch in the turns and when I need it. And yea it's the same as a car it's really easy
i got my yfz450r yesterday and it was my first manual transmition bike and i was wonder why every time i would the clutch off the thing would stall so i looked at this video helped me a heap thanks bro
i am 14 and have a 200 cc Honda and it goes as hell, and I thought it wasnt to hard to learn. In the start I was just letting out the clutch to fast. This vid was really easy to learn from :) Nice job
@casteveanerpool you can pull in the clutch when up shifting or u can just let off the throttle and shift then get back on the throttle. I find not using the clutch alot faster and easier
@TheTurkeyhunter13 I dont agree with you. I have been riding my Outlaw 450 for 4 years and rode like that and not had a problem. Some people say it isnt good for it, but im not beleiving anyone until they have a good explanation why.
@ThePolaris4life not using the clutch where's out the clutch plates which will make your clutch start to slip and eventually you'll have to replace your clutch plates. that is a fact that it does do this but some people don't use the clutch, either way it is bad for your engine, even if it takes 5 years for something to go bad
@TheTurkeyhunter13 It is not bad for tranny as long as you let off the gas. There is no stress on the gears as long as you let off while shifting it does not damage anything. There are a few people that will argue that, but i have not heard anyone say that any part in their transmission went bad because they didnt use the clutch while they were shifting. I have my engine apart right now and i have been riding my quad like this for 4 years. The cases and gears have no problems
@TheTurkeyhunter13 Just because you dont use the clutch to upshift dont mean they wouldnt put one on a quad, so that one made absolutely no sense. The clutch is still used to start, stop, and downshift.
@TheTurkeyhunter13 Ur just sounding like a retard. The first post clearly said you can upshift without pulling in the clutch. Never said you should never use the clutch. Ur points make no sense and are just making you look bad.
@ThePolaris4life no i was taking what you said and blew it out of proportion. because you say that not using the clutch wont affect the engine in any way but yes, yes it will. look it up
@TheTurkeyhunter13 I never said not to use the clutch. I said that you dont have to use it while upshifting as long as you let off the gas while shifting. Your the one that obviously needs to look it up because 90% of the people say that it is alright, but there are a few that say it will cause damage. Those few people have no proof that it will ruin the transmission. The 90% have proof because they have been upshifting without the clutch for years and their quads are still running great.
@ThePolaris4life i said it wears out the clutch plates. and it does, and my friend had to replace his clutch plates because of not using the clutch to upshift. that is my proof. don't assume i don't have proof because there it is, i had to help with it and it was a bitch to do.
@TheTurkeyhunter13 Thats not proof. Clutch plates can go bad for many reasons. There are plenty of other things that wear them out. Slipping the clutch and popin the clutch is bad on it too, but people still do it. That could have ruined your clutch plates, not from upshifting without a clutch.
@ThePolaris4life he uses the clutch to upshift now. its been 6 years and they haven't gone bad. i don't see how you can argue this, it is a fact that it does fuck with your clutch plates and it grinds the gears really bad. you are strait up retarded saying that it doesn't do anything, you are wrong. Just accept the fact that you don't know how to ride and you don't know shit about engines. and anybody can through in numbers so i say 99% of people agree with me and 1% don't know shit
@TheTurkeyhunter13 I never said it wont hurt clutch, i was saying there are tons of things that are bad for clutch plates. And it doesnt grind the gears because they are moving so fast they want to move to next gear And i do know how to ride and i actually have videos of me riding, which are from when i started riding a manuel atv. If i was so bad at riding and had no clue how to ride i wouldnt be racing. You dont have a single video on about you riding because you probably cant even ride. I
@ThePolaris4life i was saying you don't know how to ride because you don't apparently know how to use the clutch. and i do have video's on youtube just not on this account. wow your really desperate to prove me wrong.. but you are wrong so it can't be done.
@TheTurkeyhunter13 If i was wrong i would have quit argueing a long time ago. I only argue when i know what im talking about. There isnt a correct way to shift. Nobody said you have to pull in the clutch while upshifting, its optional. I choose the faster way, just letting off then shifting, because i race mx and its alot faster. You chose to pull in the clutch which is totally fine, except you wont be winning any holeshots that way.
@ThePolaris4life so wat ur sayin is tht u dont need to use the clutch to UPSHIFT for neutral to 1st??? id like to see u do tht and try and keep it runnin:) haha, somebody is kinda a dumbass
@ThePineconewarrior Well first off, neutral on my quad is between 1st and 2nd, so i would be downshifting to get from neutral to 1st. But i was just responding to another person asking a question and i was pretty sure he was talking about when he was moving, not taking off. But i guess i should be a bit more specific in the future
@ThePolaris4life how is it any faster not to pull in the clutch? it literally takes an 8th of a second to shift. and you keep mentioning that you race and i got news for you buddy, NOBODY CARES! you race with a piece of shit 4 wheeler as you call it. not a quad a 4 wheeler so idk how that works for ya but whatever. and you are wrong and your arguing because you can't accept the fact that im smarter on the subject than you
@TheTurkeyhunter13 I never said people cared, im saying it takes skill to race so obviously i would know how to shift. And you say im making up numbers? whered that 8th of a second to shift? But the dirtbike/ 4wheeler arguement is all an opinon. You can hate on quads all you want.
@ThePolaris4life i thought it was a four wheeler. and also people that say its an opinion just don't know what the hell they're talking about. and your question doesn't make sense "whered that 8th of a second to shift?" another thing to prove your illiterate. OH WAIT I'll give you a minute to look that one up...... ok? good? alright. now that you know the definition my point is proven
@TheTurkeyhunter13 I was saying where you came up with it takes 8th of a second to shift. Sorry youtube wouldnt let me type more than that. You said i was making up numbers but now your doing it. Hypocrite much?
@ThePolaris4life i wasn't making up numbers. if it takes you any more than an 8th of a second to shift you do not know how to shift. and i want to see the charts and graphs saying that more people disagree with me. you get that, and I'll believe you, and it can't come from yahoo answers or any alike.
@ThePolaris4life anything thats official and there was a poll taken with at least 1000 reply's counts. thats the general number for a confirmed answer. and don't be so specific. just shifting in general not just on atv's
@ThePolaris4life thats my point right there. something with comments is not official. im saying where people took a vote or a "poll". not comments. votes. if you find a pie chart or a legit vote count saying thats its good for your engine to not use the clutch then i will believe you.
@TheTurkeyhunter13 And i want you to beleive me why? I could really care less. I was just proving that i know how to ride and that just because i dont use the clutch to upshift, doesnt mean i dont know how to ride "right"
@ThePolaris4life if you didn't want me to believe you, you wouldn't have made such a big deal out of it. and no, im sorry but you do not know how to ride
@mathieuemi666 Destroying what? Im pretty sure if i was destroying anything i would have noticed while the motor was being rebuild over the winter. Maybe if you kids started learning things and not just "thinking" things are bad you would know what your talking about.
@jackthePS3GAMER yea when ur movein and u want to shift gears u let off the gas and hold the clutch in and push the shifter up and hit the gas then u keep goin =) have fun rideing dude
@famous360modz well i havent actually bought an atv yet i have been riding my whole life but never dealt with manuals since my grandpa always kept automatic stuff but i am looking into buying one that is manual thanks for being a nice person and not your average youtube ass most people on here would call me a fucking idiot for not knowing how to ride one
Clutch is easy u rlly only need to learn the feel for your fourwheeler etc. Every clutch is different. Just slow down get off the gas pull the clutch in kick up on theshifter hold the clutch till u feel it start to rev then let go and so on for the rest of the ride
wow, thats have you drive the atv? you accelerate by pushing that thing? isnt it usually like twisting the handle to accelerate? are all yamaha accelerators like this one?
Next time you do a video like this, block the rear axle up so the tires are just off the ground a few inches. Block your front tires, or put them up against a wall so the quad is less likely to slip off the blocks holding the rear of the ATV up (under the center of the swingarm). Either do this on a day when it's not windy, or do it in the barn/garage somewhere to get out of the wind and have good audio in your vid. Now you can do a much better job making your instructional videos! Peace out.
I know you were just trying to help people, but to be honest, this really was NOT a very good video for teaching the CORRECT way to shift a manual trans ATV. It would be much better if you took the time to show shifting through the gears WITH the clutch, proper downshifting, and more. Bottom line, the problem most people have is starting to move in the beginning. They mostly need to learn how to control the clutch lever and at the same time, gradually control their thumb (or twist) throttle.
@SuperTurboDiesel2 granted he did say he is going to show you without the clutch for only having 2 hands, but i definitely understand you for saying to always always shift with the cluth, atv's, bikes, even cars and trucks, its better to shift with clutch instead of power shifting
Ok, not to bash ya too hard, but it's NOT a good idea to teach most people how to shift without using the clutch every time. Reason is that they will eventually trash their transmission, which ain't cheap! Don't get me wrong, I know experienced people may do it, and do it well much of the time. However, most people that ride ATV's are NOT experienced, and do not have a good "feel" for the RPM's and speed of their machine. Thus, they should always use the clutch when shifting through EVERY gear.
Dude, I think it's high time you do some basic maintenance work to your quad. The chain is too loose and needs lube. Gearshift lever is really loose on the shift shaft (better tighten it up, before it strips out the splines!). The damned thing is low on 2-stroke oil, etc... How hard is it to do any of the above? It's not. Might take you a whopping 1/2 hour at the most, and that's accounting for finding your tools and oil when you begin, and for putting them away when you're done. Just sayin'...
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!! YOUR SOOOOO AWESOME I AM GETTING AN ATV TODAY AND I HAD NO IDEAAAA HOW TO DO THISSSSSSS THANK YOU SOOO MUCH!!!!!!
wait i didnt get this clearly so when ur ready to shift to second you let off the throttle and grab clutch then shift or just let off throttle and shift without clutch... or both ways.
this really helped me because whenever i go to kentucky with my cousins theres only 3 atvs and four of us. but only one of us know how to drive a manual. but i know now so i'll get my own. probably
@SnellBalla some of them dont have reverse, if it does, u either have to hold the brake and kick it down again past first, or there is an actual separate lever that u have to pull and kick it down past first
do u have to use the clutch slowly like how u do in first gear through out the rest of gears. or do u use the clutch kinda fast? also, can u hold the clutch down when u down shift or do u have to keep using the clutch each time u down shift? i was just wondering cause if u have to stop quickly it would be hard to keep using the clutch each time.
@Grend3Whstle well if you want to stop before crashing into something you better let go of the clutch between every gear change, that way the motor brakes the atv/bike as well.
@munkeman95 i sugest you get a dirtbike beacuse thats what i al ways drove on when i was a kid is a regular bycile and now i cant stop riding a dirtbike. but if you like stability and fast speeds i think you would like a quad better. but get a honda.
Let's say if you are gonna crash and you don't have time to pull the clutch and shift it down, and you hit the brakes what will happen? Will something brake or it won't brake if your not in first gear?
i say for the people learning clutch and shifting ride or buy a little semi-auto atv then move up to a manual because with semi-auto atvs, u learn how and when to shift.
I got all the basics fine as I also drive a manual car so its a piece of cake now im just not sure about one thing still and that is, are you supposed to use the clutch when upshifting?
@wagner59270 i know how to shift with clutch really good but its the stopping im not good at with cutch can u make a video on how to stop with a clutch thanks
After I let out the clutch slowly in first gear and I get ready to shift into 2nd and I put in the clutch should I let it out slowly or can I let it out faster when shifting from first to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd and sooo on??
First off, this is a great video. I have so much trouble finding neutral though on my two stroke, is that 'half-shift'/light flick the trick to hitting it??
you sir are awesome....anyone looking to learn how to drive a atv with clutch should watch this. I watched this vid months ago and it help me learn on my 700 raptor when I bought it.
hey man...good video. I am going to get a 03 suzuki ltz 400 and i need to learn. you said that you dont have to use the clutch after the 1st gear. So after you do the first gear, is it just like driving a automatic? Just using the throttle?
if i got a yamaha raptor that has a clutch lever, do i have to use the clutch lever, or at a stop shift in first without touchin the gas, then go then from there i shift up but if i revved up the engine and let go of the gas could i shift up or down without breaking the engine or? could i drive without using the clutch? how does it work?

RecklessStunts 6 months ago
any manual transmission can be switched without a clutch, you simply have to be able to revmatch. obviously you cant do it from a stand-still.

Peace out.
SuperTurboDiesel2 7 months ago 8
I know you were just trying to help people, but to be honest, this really was NOT a very good video for teaching the CORRECT way to shift a manual trans ATV. It would be much better if you took the time to show shifting through the gears WITH the clutch, proper downshifting, and more. Bottom line, the problem most people have is starting to move in the beginning. They mostly need to learn how to control the clutch lever and at the same time, gradually control their thumb (or twist) throttle.
SuperTurboDiesel2 7 months ago
@SuperTurboDiesel2 granted he did say he is going to show you without the clutch for only having 2 hands, but i definitely understand you for saying to always always shift with the cluth, atv's, bikes, even cars and trucks, its better to shift with clutch instead of power shifting
lococuhz 7 months ago
Ok, not to bash ya too hard, but it's NOT a good idea to teach most people how to shift without using the clutch every time. Reason is that they will eventually trash their transmission, which ain't cheap! Don't get me wrong, I know experienced people may do it, and do it well much of the time. However, most people that ride ATV's are NOT experienced, and do not have a good "feel" for the RPM's and speed of their machine. Thus, they should always use the clutch when shifting through EVERY gear.
SuperTurboDiesel2 7 months ago
Dude, I think it's high time you do some basic maintenance work to your quad. The chain is too loose and needs lube. Gearshift lever is really loose on the shift shaft (better tighten it up, before it strips out the splines!). The damned thing is low on 2-stroke oil, etc... How hard is it to do any of the above? It's not. Might take you a whopping 1/2 hour at the most, and that's accounting for finding your tools and oil when you begin, and for putting them away when you're done. Just sayin'...

how do yuu put a shifting four wheeler in reverse?/
SnellBalla 8 months ago
@SnellBalla some of them dont have reverse, if it does, u either have to hold the brake and kick it down again past first, or there is an actual separate lever that u have to pull and kick it down past first

do you need to use the clutch for every gear after 1st and 2nd ???
ryandixon123456789 9 months ago
do u have to use the clutch slowly like how u do in first gear through out the rest of gears. or do u use the clutch kinda fast? also, can u hold the clutch down when u down shift or do u have to keep using the clutch each time u down shift? i was just wondering cause if u have to stop quickly it would be hard to keep using the clutch each time.
Grend3Whstle 9 months ago
@Grend3Whstle well if you want to stop before crashing into something you better let go of the clutch between every gear change, that way the motor brakes the atv/bike as well.

@munkeman95 i sugest you get a dirtbike beacuse thats what i al ways drove on when i was a kid is a regular bycile and now i cant stop riding a dirtbike. but if you like stability and fast speeds i think you would like a quad better. but get a honda.
ZombieSlayer1200 11 months ago
what should i get dirtbike or quad and why? what kind?
munkeman95 11 months ago
Let's say if you are gonna crash and you don't have time to pull the clutch and shift it down, and you hit the brakes what will happen? Will something brake or it won't brake if your not in first gear?

i say for the people learning clutch and shifting ride or buy a little semi-auto atv then move up to a manual because with semi-auto atvs, u learn how and when to shift.
r0ckzxvids 1 year ago
I got all the basics fine as I also drive a manual car so its a piece of cake now im just not sure about one thing still and that is, are you supposed to use the clutch when upshifting?

answer to your question 3 pull the clutch start hittin the brakes and start shifting down
jeengelking 1 year ago
3 questions
1. how would you go to a normal complete stop from a higher gear and lower gear
2. how do i stop really quickly from any gear(preferably high)
3. can you get into neutral from any gear
Ive actually driven a manual transmission car but never an ATV before

fox259 1 year ago
hey man...good video. I am going to get a 03 suzuki ltz 400 and i need to learn. you said that you dont have to use the clutch after the 1st gear. So after you do the first gear, is it just like driving a automatic? Just using the throttle?
