It is not easy to get hired on with any large department anywhere in the US, FDNY, LAFD, Chicago, etc. it is a tough process. I was declined twice by LA and I have 4 years on a paid department.

Get some friends in the department, especially the officers, and make yourself known, if you can get references and have your EMT-P license, I know their hiring

There's nothing easy about getting hired by the LAFD or any Fire Dept. Just ask the 1,000 or so canditdates who are told they aren't qualified enough to work for the LAFD. Unless you've been through the hiring process with both agencies, you'd just be guessing.
