in the olympic squat, you mention your knees should be aligned with your feet as you descend. However in the video, your knees always made it past your feet. I also hear people saying knees shouldn't go past your knees. Which is the right form?
Getting below parallel is better for the knees. Doing those partial "power squats" is bad for the knee as the motion must be stopped at parallel (stress on the acl) and started again with the knees. Stay healthy and go ass to grass.
olympic squat is the best, it places much less stress on your spine, and only guys white god core strengh can pull it off it's the athelets squat, his back is too forward on the olympic squat.
Im 6-1 i squat 435 for 6 reps today but i dont go quite parrallel cuz knees plus its dumb no powerlifters are close to that height. They go parrallel with like a 1 foot rom.
great explanations and performance alltho i have seen a few people going deep with the power squat to. its not impossible to go almost ATG or even ATG with the low-bar position
A narrow stance squat does not develop any more quad muscle fiber action than a wide stance squat. A wide stance squat is more functional for sports and everyday use. The narrow stance front squat helps with Olympic lifts like the C & J but for functionality, I'd go with the wide stance power squat.
The wrap on the olympic squat is that it is hard on the knees, but this is wrong. Try an olympic squat and then a squat where you stop at or above parallel (a partial squat). You'll see that the toughest part of the olympic squat motion (when your ass is below parallel) puts less force on the knees.
@djacklowery I have heard Louie Simmons say this but the evidence he gives is anecdotal and I think he is just bias towards his methods and Westside. The Olympic squat will activate more fibers in the quad, common sense. For some anecdotal evidence to support this, look at the thighs of Olympic lifters.
@dp1569 Meh, I've seen the quads of olympic lifters. They're huge no doubt, but I've also seen the quads of powerlifters...There quads/legs are much bigger in my opinion.
I recently switched to a wide stance squat and my 1RM has gone up significantly while still maintaining good form.
Aesthetically my quads/legs have also gained size and look a hundred times better.
i didnt think there was two different squats i just thought thats how people do it i play basketball im trying to increase my vertical which one should i do ?
@oliverrainman u should do both, in the 1-5 rep range to develop nervous system and power, and have a slow tempo going doing and explode on the way up
don't believe everything you see on here. You never want your knees to go forward over your feet, because this puts stress on them and is bad over time and can be dangerous with high weights. You always want your back upright thus causing your knees to bend but not jut forward. At least that's what I was taught.
@Curn1 try heavy olympic squatting with a heavy weight and not having your knees going past your toes, guarantee you will fall over. I've been my coach and I have been squatting this way for YEARS and our knees are perfectly fine.
my balance is actually relle crap, i cant go parallel without falling over, i usually do it as as possible say a few degrees off parallel, is that fine?
I currently squat 425 olympic squat but it hurts the hell out of my knees, I play football would doing the power squat be a better variation? And will I be able to more weight?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Flat shoes + heavy weight = lower back injury, especially if you are not flat footed. No shoes is worse because you have no support for your ankles. Nice form but BAD BAD advice.
@Hunt8rJob ur a moron.. what do u think happens to ur feet and body in general when u lift with flat shoes or no shoes at all? it adapts, muscles strengthen. OMG its amzing i know...
Doing power squats puts more emphasis on my back, so it's only natural that I use my back to pick up the dang weight, but people may it seem as though I'm using most of my back to get it up. That's not true.
God bless your soul!!! That's how I've been squatting for quite some time, but people act as if I don't know what I'm doing. I do Power Squats. I don't do Olympic Squats. I've been so worked over this for a while. My friend told me that I was hard headed and that I needed to swallow my pride, but it wasn't about pride. That's just how I squat. Dang. I squat 555lbs during my first year at college and I didn't have any problems at all from doing the Power Squat. Thank you so very much!

@ibizmoney It's rubbish though. WHY do people accept parallel squats? Would you accept people doing a bench press with the same range of movement as a parallel (half) squat?
Because for a lot of people keeping arch in lower back becomes excessively hard ATG - even the example person here lets his back round bad - his whose power squat is not deep enough to qualify as parallel either btw. For non olympic lifter often parallel gives you the full training effect but less risk of loosening the lumbar tension.
Hey pete, whats the best everyday work out? as in all over body and how many times a week you work out? i do 5 and rest for 2 but just wondering since i hear a lot of different type of ways
i just started trying to work out the other day and I tried to do a squat and threw my back out its been like 5 days and it still hasn't fully healed up so I haven't been going to the gym, should I go back to the gym and keep trying now or wait until I don't feel any pain in my back anymore?
@Ammo1174 No. After you've injured something at the gym don't be in a hurry to go back and re injure yourself if it still hurts. In the mean time you should watch some more instructional videos to fix your form and when you are healed warm up with a lower weight (preferably the bar) and practice form. If you can get someone to watch your form and help you out.
ive been doing the power squat stance but going past parallel, i have got alot of good results from it and get a good pump and from it should i change my stance?
Whenever i squat, my knees go past my toes.. like does widening my stance help this? Everyone at the gym says you need to work on balance and lean back more.
@footballplyer73 It all depends on how old you are, for how long you have been training strenght and what your position and tasks are on the field. Its more important to look at what factors you want to change. Is it mobility, agility, power, explosivness and/or strenght?
@footballplyer73 I think speed is most important for you, cos you mostly need it when kicking a ball. And of course you need aerobic endurance as well, but that shouldn't be a surprise.
@footballplyer73 Maybe Pete will chime in here and give his thoughts, but olympic squats are a much more natural motion, and help to transition to other athletic movements very well. Power squats are a good exercise too, but they build more movement specific strength than functional, athletic strength. Also, olympic squats rae much more explosive. I vote olympic squat. Make sure you get some olympic lifting shoes like he's wearing in the video though if you're going to do them.
@IAMSKILLED He works out like fuck, dude. Working out with weights speeds up your metabolism. He's ripped and lean because he works out so much, so any crap he eats gets burnt off mega quickly because of the increased metabolism from the weight training.
