Actually if a person who is covered with tonnes of tonnes of insurance policies still have to foot out of pocket money no matter how small the sum is , makes you sit up and think if you are indeed wearing the fool's hat
Reply to cinncinnful: precisely the bill was not cheap but not everyone has as much medisave as mr khaw such that his out-of-pocket was only $8 duh! U have missed the point entirely! Go figure!!
Excellent speech by Prof Paul. You are one of the few who is not scared to speak your part. You are always well liked by your patients and after this you will be well liked by the common people. What you said in your fluent mandarin was true, "You can die but cannot fall sick in Singapore."
I am too from the medical field , the good prof is right on every count sometimes I get this feeling that terminal illness and chronic diseases is what make the medical industries thrived , medical establishments and the health ministry is least concern whether the patient gets well , their main objective is that the patient ..... PAYS !!!
When the good doctor speaks we listen , I know Ananth , very reserve person but I say he really had enough up to his neck to make this speech , we need to change it's no longer the paradise we know of now , it's turning into hell
A heart to heart talk to all Singaporean. Must hear to be enlighten and make a difference with your vote to make this change for the better for all Singaporean.
We are now finally learning to stand up together and be heard!!! What is the use of being No1 in all that we do, but we should also have a true compassionate heart to help our own.
Vote Wisely & do not fear because the true Singaporean vioce have spoken!
great speech by prof! being in a medical social work department in a gov hospital has led me to see how the healthcare policies are lacking. there are so many people out there struggling to pay for their bills because medisave is not enough and they cannot qualify for medifund.
singapore believes in a "many helping hands" approach, but so many people are falling through the cracks.
We need more people like that willing to speak up for struggles faced by the people.
This is an honest speech from the heart. Most Singaporeans r not faced with $8 bills after a major hospitalisation or operation. It is not uncommon that some have to sell their homes to pay for their bills, use up their Medisave for their parents & find that they can't afford it when their condition is congenital (certainly not the patients fault).
it is all in their plan to keep assets within Singapore, after you have build up all your wealth in your home value, in your final months it will flow back into the system, creating immoral greedy specialists charging 25million dollars for patients final years leaving nothing to your children who will then have to repeat the process for them to bleed

It's not completely right as Khaw's bill wasn't just $8 but $25k. After his Medisave deductions and all that then it was $8 cash. Would think that as a doctor you would know this? There's a CNA article on this.
@cinncinnful It's completely right. He clearly said that Khaw Boon Wan paid only $8 in cash. Everybody knows that the total bill is bigger than that, and that's exactly Prof Tambyah's point - Khaw Boon Wan had a generous health insurance policy which no ordinary Singaporean could afford, and Khaw was simply misleading the people by boasting that he only needed to pay $8 out of his pocket when in fact it's only because he can pay for expensive insurance with a million-dollar salary.
as a medical doctor in a gov hospital in Singapore - I can vouch for everything he says. The common man does not pay $8 on average for his hospital bills for a sudden devastating illness. The common man has to sell his flat, families have to undergo the ridiculously stringent and stingy MEANS test, which effectively rules out most families from significant governmental support, and all their children's medisaves are wiped out. Pls vote wisely to ensure policies are changed for the greater good.

Its convincing and rousing cos every word he says is the truth.
Not every doctor will be so willing to speak up like him.
He has touched on almost all the issues there is to regarding the healthcare in singapore.
healthcare budget, loss of local doctors, import of foreign docs, cutting staff pay, loss of primary healthcare in singapore, inequality of resources.
well spoken really.
