This simulator very clearly has the camera view fixed to the chassis. Not like most modern commercially available racing simulators that mimick the head bouncing around in the in-car view. And personally I've always found the fixed view to offer a better feel, sort of a visual sense of balance if you like. Any thoughts?
This looks sooo cool! I was at an event in NYC recently and they had rented an F1 simulator (from Amusitronix). It was the most popular thing at the party and I stood in line 3 times. Now I really wanna have a go on the pro rig.
This simulator is made by BRD simulation, and is probably running the same engine as netKar Pro. Stefano Casillo works for BRD, and is the creator of netKar. Look up who BRD are on google. They advertise right on the site that they made the simulator.
Except that Jaap Wagenvoort, a guy who is part of the netKar Pro developer team, has said that NKP has no relation to Williams F1 team. That "Official Licensee" could just mean that they (BRD) can brand their motion platforms with Williams logos and so on...
So you're suggesting the British GP last and this year was staged on a some other track that just looks like Silverstone but it happens to have also red curbs?
Silverstone has had blue and white kerbs for years, I guess they changed it for the Santander sponsorship, the last time I went there in 2007 to the motogp they were definitely blue and white.
I'm not sure how a circuit changing the colour of their kerbs doesn't make the track accurate?
Don't let the "developed by real F1 team" totally blind you.
I don't know if you play any racing sims (sub-genre of racing games, yes they're still entertainment and "just video games"), if you do, then you should see that the steering inputs and how the car actually looks on the screen in this video - is not that amazing compared to what 50 $ game can already achieve. And I'm not talking about the graphics - that's totally irrelevant.
Search for "force dynamics 401" video here youtube and you'll see what "just a video game" can achieve when connected to a less than 50,000 $ motion platform. I'M NOT saying that is better than this, though.
I think most of the millions (!?) spent on this simulator has been put to the motion platform and how to collect data. I bet the real steering wheel and the monocoque already costs quite a lot.
And by the way, Hamilton's comment before Brazilian GP last year when asked if he had trained himself in the simulator: "I don't gain physically or mentally from it."
You don't know what you're talking about, the computers that run these simulators are outside what you can buy anywhere, and all of their power is dedicated to physics. There is just no point in trying to compare.
The real reason why simulators are not popular among drivers is because they don't provide the feel of the car (you can't simulate 5 Gs of force).
Renault has the worse simulator out there and the drivers said it's "almost as bad as a PC simulator".
"I doubt there is a supercomputer running this sim. If you read all of my comments, I wasnt actually making a direct compare."
The video from Honda Racing F1's website shows the computer that they use and it's huge. Not only that, they have multiple screens and guys looking at their telemetry and at how the air bends around the car.
The other teams OWN crappy sims but they do RENT better simulators from specialized companies that also build sims for the air force and military.
I have not seen this video you mention but that ("how the air bends around the car") sounds very much like a wind tunnel. But wind tunnels are different thing than real time driving simulators.
Well that McLaren simulator wouldn't exactly fit in my living room and since it has been developed with NASA, it might be a little too expensive as a Christmas gift!
funny that they make him wear the race overalls but not a helmet...

Your Playstation can model physics closely enough to do true development work with a cutting edge F1 team?

I doubt there is a supercomputer running this sim. If you read all of my comments, I wasnt actually making a direct compare.
Not popular for other reasons too, Coulthard once said "My two laps on a scooter probably told me more than 100 laps in the simulator." :)
According to some news sources only Williams and McLaren are claimed to have sims, rest have no sims or just "better versions of Playstation"

....I know what a wind tunnel is. I mean that the program models the the air dynamics in real time. Like a lighter, real time version of CFD.
darfunkelidas 3 years ago
So? Was that then connected to the simulator or something? and speaking of which...
...I went to Honda website, found the "Honda TV" video player, what video were you specifically talking about? the name of the video, I mean :)
FormulaOneSpy 3 years ago
It was a video with christian klein from 2007 but i cant see it on the list anymore. It looks like they only keep the most recent ones.
darfunkelidas 3 years ago
Well if i compare PS3 with rFactor, it's already two worlds. So take this level times 4 and you'll have a Idea how a f1 car must be.
