Steve, I'm getting back into car audio after about 8-10 years out. What are the benefits of the computer (mini mac) as a head unit? Don't you lose a lot of sound quality compared to the high end cd units like P99 and Drz9255? What other applications can you use the computer for?

I gotta agree with skaterspwn, man. I work for a data recovery firm located just south of Cincinnati. You get that bass pumping and it's going to mess with the read/write heads in the drive. Solid state drives are pricey but for a true media center Mac in your Tahoe, you'll want to get one.

The most significant drawback to hard drive storage is speed. It takes time for the drives to spin up to speed and to physically move the drive heads to the necessary locations on the drive. This is one of the primary reasons why it takes a computer system a while to boot up. Much of this time is spent synchronizing the drives to read the data.

i have a mac mini. THey are awesome for their size, and price. They are good for minor to small gaming.

I use mini for just music (12,000 songs), pictures and videos. It is great for all that and internet surfing.

Otherwise if you want to play games. I'd go for a iMac.

thats exactly what I thought. The shock of the bass wouldnt damage the drive. Its a possibility with a spin drive.

Keep a good backup of this thing because as hard as you bump I would not be surprised if you go through hard drives really fast on this. Sector errors probably. You may have to convert the mac mini to an SSD Drive.

If it's wifi make you an ad-hoc network on it and use your iPod as remote to change songs, volume, and don't even have to be in the truck to control the music

if your gonna mostly use windows u should put on vmware instead of parallels. you can run both OS's at the same time or just boot straight into windows for better performance.

This is a good point, the magnetic balance of regular harddrives is likely to be thrown off by not only the typical g-forces of a car in motion, but all the vibration from the soundsystem.

Changing parts in that little locked up thing is going to be next to impossible though. :(
