NOW..imagine clowns never existed to you, and...you're in a roman stage, and then you see gladiators come in, and hear this music for the first time...yeah..pretty pumping :D
I guess it was originally meant as a joke... here come the gladiators, oh lol it's the clowns. Plus as soon as you play this on a calliope it sounds goofy.
Obviously the concert version. This old trombonist wouldn't have to double tongue the runs at this beat. Usually I have trouble keeping up at the circus version.....
Glad you like it! Now remember to vote next November so those slimey little aged lizards, Richie Rich Boy Vulture Capitalists, Goody-Goody Homophobes and Gold-Standard Doctor Do-littles don't get in the White House! @dandis92
I just realized it is my birthday 8 days from now, I wonder if that had anything do do with my sudden urge to listen to this type of music. I will be 22 years old! LOL, oh well... Carnival Music is always fun! :D
Holy shit, THIS is what this piece is called/who it is composed by? Never heard of either before :L also, was it only me who found this guy's surname mildly amusing/misleading? Minus culture points for me :(
I used to play this whole piece on a 32 note steam calliope...Pretty tricky to arrange when you only have 32 keys to work with, but I managed to pull it off. The arrangement I worked from was in C, and the first F major part was the trickiest to arrange. I tried to play this on the Delta Queen, but the low F whistle was dead, so I skipped to Ringling Brothers' Grand Entry.
@prorrie For your information, Prorrie, I played the steam calliope on the Belle of Louisville from 1997 to 2004, and I know exactly what I'm talking about...I have the audio recording of me trying to play this piece on the Delta Queen's calliope while struggling with a dead low F whistle...I had to stop playing the Fucik piece before the F major section because the tonic bass note was dead, and I started playing Ringling Brothers' Grand Entry instead, because I knew that I could do it.
@CentaurusOfLight Come one... There no point of comparison between modern circus and the gladiatorial games, except the fact that they take place in a "circus" (which is actually inacurrate too, as the circus was used for chariot races and not for gladiator fights, which took place in arenas).
@AngelOfTheLastHope First off, I did say that the charioteers raced in the circus and I know that the gladiators fought in the Colosseum. Second, it's easy to compare the gladiators fighting animals to performers acting with them when you realize how much time has passed since the fall of Rome.
@CentaurusOfLight You did say that the charioteers raced in the circus, but the way you formulated things led me to think that you were mixing up circuses and arenas. If you don't, that's alright, but a clarification may be necessary for some people. And I mean no offence, but I think comparing gladiators to contemporary performers is a great lack of respect for the former group, as they were almost gods in the eyes of most people and risked their lives much more than today's performers do.
@AngelOfTheLastHope Plenty of great things have been watered down by time. Performers are one of those things in this instance(there are still a lot of great performers though). And sorry if I sounded a little defensive, youtube comments do not convey emotion very well.
@CentaurusOfLight There are, of course... But, to cite only the most obvious exemple, I don't think you would find a Spartacus among today's circus performers. And no problem for the defensive part ;)
So if i where a gladiator.. does this mean i have to use this as my entrance theme like in wrestling? but wait, isn't wrestling fake? So does that mean my battle as a gladiator would also be fake?
@budbuddingdingMUSE I know. Its just easier to go to both of you to stop the arguing that way one of you doesn't keep making jabs at the other. Oh and I know he is a dick. That's why he is complaining about another persons grammer on youtube. And if FranzAttalee is reading this, this next part is for you.
Just because you think he wasn't a great composer doesn't mean he ist to someone else. You should have better things to do than correct another persons grammar. Get a life. Peace out!
Isn't it amusing how self-appointed critics proclaim a certain composer "average" when facts belie that assessment? Julius Fucik studied at the Czech Conservatory and took lessons in composition from Anton Dvorak, who was not too shabby himself. Fucik wrote over 300 pieces including orchestral marches and his music is still being played today. There are knowledgeable people who equate him to J. Strauss ll. Pretty good for an "average" composer, wouldn't you say?
@FlierFrank172 Objective facts have no way of attacking subjective opinions. The fact that Fucik studied with a great composer, wrote a lot of pieces and has been thought to have been great by other people does not mean he is in my eyes. In Orwell's words, 'sanity is not statistical'.
I can't keep from associating this with the circus. It just isn't possible for me and the fact that it was suposed to be about gladiators blows my mind.
@FranzAttlee dude just shut the fuck up, both of you! Its an insult to a great composer to be using a youtube vid of his song being used as a forum for your petty arguments.
@82ravens If by 'both of you', you mean me as well - I never started anything. If you see my top comment, I was against people coming here because they thought they 'saw a swear word' - The top comment before hand was "Like if you clicked because you thought 'Fucik' was something else". Hence 'immature imbecile' is what I call them.
Then this other guy, FranzAttlee or whatever started correcting my grammer etc... being a total dick. So please don't think I'm insulting the composer - I'm not all
@budbuddingdingMUSE "Seriously some people nowadays!" You're right a question mark SHOULD finish that sentence, but that does not mean by consequence that no other punctuation should occur. A comma belongs after 'Seriously', it's good English.
@FranzAttlee Okay, I admit I misunderstood you there and thought about the wrong 'seriously' but I still don't need you to correct me thank you very much! I'm aimed for an A* grade at English GCSE.
Also I noticed you've said "he wasn't a great composer" and you're right in that you have the 'Freedom of Speech' but if you think it's that terrible, then one thing, which links to what you said later on in that comment - If you don't want to listen to the song, then go away
@budbuddingdingMUSE I didn't say I didn't want to listen to this, which, incidentally, is not a 'song'; I said I thought Fucik was an average composer.
@budbuddingdingMUSE 1) Song: Words set to music to be sung. No orchestras involved. Entry of the Gladiators: An orchestral march. 2) Who said you had to rate a composer highly to want to listen to one of his many pieces?
@FranzAttlee I'm not saying that. Just you said he is an 'average composer' which means you don't think he can compose to a standard of your liking. So why are you here listening to it, is what I am asking? It's hard to explain what I mean. Like I feel that rappers are average composers, so I just don't listen to them.
Also, I know that's the definition of 'song' but I just don't agree with it xD Song sounds right to me and I cba to change my vocabulary after years of saying mostly 'song'
@budbuddingdingMUSE Faulty logic. Saying one wouldn't listen to the work of someone because you general think they are sub-par is like saying I don't think oranges are the best fruit in the world and so I will never eat them, or I don't think France is the greatest country in the world so I will never go there.
@FranzAttlee France and oranges are two totally different things.
My bad, I used a bad example.
Music is different, If you think somebody is an average composer you aren't really going to listen to their music are you? E.g. I like Arctic Monkey's first two albums, but I listened to the two new ones and thought they lost composing quality compared to their previous work, so I don't listen to those albums.
Therefore if you find Julius Fucik an average composer, why are you listening to him?
@budbuddingdingMUSE It is irrelevant that they are totally different, the principle is the same. Just because I may think Fucik was generally a sub-par composer, that isn't to say I think all of his work is sub-par. That would be like saying generally I hate the Republican Party, and so I also hate every single Republican. I do hate the GOP, but I happen to admire Ron Paul. It's the same logic here. I don't like Fucik generally, but this piece I happen to enjoy.
@FranzAttlee Well yeah, calling him a sub-par composer is based on his work... Therefore you think his work is sub-par yes??? If you think he has made some good pieces, then he is a good composer yes??? Every composer has bad pieces no matter what. I compose and I've made some pretty cool riffs/songs, but also some absolute terrible ones.
@budbuddingdingMUSE Improve your logic! Just because I think generally a composer was sub-par, doesn't mean I think ALL of his work was not worth my time!

somahiru 1 month ago
@budbuddingdingMUSE The irony of you calling others immature imbeciles being that you make the grammatical failure of 'your' instead of 'you're'.
FranzAttlee 1 month ago
@FranzAttlee And only idiots correct others grammatical errors because they don't have a good counter comment...
