I have heard from both horse and dog trainers that giving them enough exercise and purpose with a job is sooo important for both their physical and mental - emotional wellbeing. In most cases people often provide too little exercise- not too much. This dog is obviously enjoying himself and takes pride in his job.
hey stop this right now! this is considered as animal abuse! You want your doggie to survive a long time do u? Because they won't lvie long as you expected because they will have future joint and back problems.
@MsChorong It's not abuse! Think of all the siberian huskies and alaskan malamutes who have been doing much harder work for years! collies and huskies are pretty closely related to their wolf ancestors, and as posted above, the carrage is light wieght, ballanced. And the dog is doing this of his own will. trust me, I OWN a collie, and you can't get them to do ANYTHING if they don't want to.
@MsChorong Just like horses, with a properly made cart, the animal is pulling with it's chest...not its back. This is not harming the animal. It is good exercise and great for his mental and physical health.
Ah! My dog would LOVE this! He has the stamina to run all day and the strength to pull. Where do you get this? Where did he have to be trained? Haha this is soooo cute :)
@Redwolf1292 He is not pulling a carriage, he is pulling a small child in a tiny one person cart made out of the lightest of materials. He seems to be enjoying it and I would understand if they were making a small dog like a toy poodle or something pull, but a lot of dogs really like to do this. As long as you have the right harness, it can be really fun. You can not agree with if you wish, but that is what I think.
I would love to drive my dog but somtimes i have concers that hes to small or my perants/people i know will not agree.i have one dog who is called oscar he is a purebred westie although he was the runt.
People seriously chill the fuck out. This is just a variant of a sled dog and imho opinion I think the dog would let you know if it doesn't like it. Oh now, lets put him on a bicycle instead of roller blades, this is far safer for the both of you. What is cruel, is putting a dog on a treadmill - that is intended for something entirely else. It's also possible that this is just an alternative form of exercise. Cart it once a week or whatever, Dogs require stimulating exercise !
@saartje05....shows how stupid you are. It's not illegal. Have you ever heard of working breeds? Collies, Rots, Pitbulls, and mountain dogs are working breeds. They get enjoyment from doing specialized work. I guess my dog doesn't jump and get excited (he's also 100lbs) because I grab his backpack (designed by Kelty) to haul items on trips, right? Wow, look into facts about working breeds and what they actually enjoy doing. Idiot.
@Joshuab58 It's illegal HERE. Only dogs bred for pulling sledges, like malamutes and huskies are allowed to pull a cart, but not a single do, at least two. The rest is NOT ALLOWED. The fact they're working breeds doesn't mean you can use them any way you want. Have you seen the videoclips of pits having to pull enormous weights? No wonder dogs are going nuts in the US. No wonder millions are being destroyed in the US every year again. Oh how we 'love' our animals.
@SleeepJunkie You must be blind, the dog doesn't enjoy it at all. If you know dogs you would see that. And who are you to say that it should be legal? Just because you're to lazy to walk your dog and take him to the forest to run? Btw, it's been illegal here for over hundred years.
@SleeepJunkie You weren't even born yet when I started working with dogs. And yes, depending on the BREED they are born to pull (malamute, husky's) to heard (shepherds) etc. That's why there are several breeds. And that why you can't put all of them in front of carts, and alone is a total nono.
How much fun! I bet he sleeps well at night, no behavior problems resulting from boredom or lack of exercise for that beautiful boy.
Everyone, ignore this Saartje character, it's obvious they are nothing but an American hating, pet-ownership hating, working-dog hating, bitter person.
@ZehAnonymous Horses were not the only animals used for carting. Some dogs are working breeds. If you do some research you will find that dog carting dates back to the 1700 and 1800's. If you have a working breed...there is nothing cruel about this. And it is not like the dog is pulling a adult. The cart moves easily..im sure more easily than sled dogs.
@angelt703 Lol, in the 18th and 19th centuries. You're right. Luckily the time horses were treated like that are over. Or..should be over. Here dogs in front of carts is forbidden for more than a hundred years. Only the husky and malamute is allowed, but only in a team, nog a single dog. What is shown here is abuse, cruel. Sled dogs aren't alone when pulling a sled. Also they're specially bred for this. Not a collie.
@Saartje05 How is carting forbidden? Who forbidded it and when? How is this cruel? The dog is not starining himself to pull it. What is cruel is dressing up dogs in clothes and putting them in strollers and comepletly humanizing dogs. Treating a dog like a human is the greatest injustice we can do for them. Carting when done properly can be a wonderful tool to use for dogs. I still don't see where carting is forbidden. It is being done all over the place.
@angelt703 Letting a dog pull a cart IS humanizing him. Or have you seen dogs take a cart and put itself in front of it? And yes, dressing up a dog is nonsense, but again, like I said before, there's a LOT in between carting and dressing up a dog. Take the dog for a run, let it have fun and take good care of it. Not use it as a horse. Buy a pony if you want. And no, it's not being done all over the place, maybe in the US but not here. It's forbidden over a hundred years.
@Saartje05 having a dog work by pulling a cart is not humanizing him.. but i guess there we will have to agree to disagree. You say it is not normal to put a dog in front of a cart...well it is far from normal to have dogs wear leashes and collars..but these are tools and when used properly are effective and safe. the same with carting. I do not know where you are from that carting is banned..but it is a shame.
@angelt703 Actually, dogs, as they were bred by humans, always wear leashes and collars. They aren't wild animals. Doesn't mean it's ok to put them in front of a cart. OR dress them up. OR leave them alone all day, OR abuse them etc. Why don't you buy a shetlandpony instead?
@Saartje05 Actually..dogs started off wild. This is why you can not do DNA testing to see if your dog has any wolf in them...since all breeds date back to wild. Obeviously you will not change my mind and I will not change yours. Just because this dog pulls a cart does not mean they abuse the dog. So before you write a comment saying this dog should be taken from you asap...consider the fact this is all you know about the dog. I hope you have a wonderful weekend.
@chandlerlover01 Actually, here a shetlandpony is a LOT cheaper than a big dog, including food. F.i. one fifty pound bag horsefood costs 13 euros, while the same amount dog found costs around 50 euros. Also, knowing how many dog are being destroyed in the US every year, many people don't know how to take care of dogs either. Yes, ponies need land, but it depends on where you live how expensive that is. F.i. I rent a piece of land a herd of elephants can graze on for only 25 euro's a month.
@chandlerlover01 That totally depends. I find ponies a lot easier. And I didn't say BECAUSE you own a dog it's abused, it's abused because you put it in front of a cart. Use a pony. You can easily own a dog without carting it and take the dog for a long walk, a run, to the forest or a park.
@Saartje05 The dog seems to be just as happy as a pony would be pulling that SMALL cart. I would only say it's abused if the cart was like three times it's size, but like I said, this dog seems to not mind it at all and even enjoys it.
Have you had any problems with people calling PETA on you? You see, I just purchased a couple Bernese Mountain Dogs with pulling training in mind, but I wold be afraid to take them out and do this, like have them pull me to the store, because someone might try to cite me with animal cruelty. Do you have to deal with anything like this?
@4240ed A couple of years ago we had a parade here and to my surprise there were Bernese Mountain dogs pulling carts. I warned them that that wasn't allowed. They didn't care but it made me laugh a week later they all got arrested for it because its forbidden.
@Saartje05 Thnx for the reply. I find it odd that they'd be arrested, where is this? China? lol Anywho, the Bernese Mountain Dog is BRED for pulling as well as herding and guarding. Maybe they should be banned for doing those things too. In my estimation, it's WAY more inhumane to keep an animal, of any kind, from doing what it was created to do, like pulling carts. Every dog has a purpose. Sitting on some porch or in some lap doing nothing is NOT one of those!!!
@4240ed I think it's more strange that in any modern country this is still allowed. Also the Berner Senner (Bernese) wasn't bred for pulling, but for protecting the farm and animals. That they sometimes used it for pulling doesn't mean it was bred to do that. You do know some Bernese were also eaten? (still) What they were orignally bred for doesn't mean a thing, times change. And there's a HUGE difference between letting a dog pull a cart andsitting in a lap. There's a lot in between.
@4240ed China? No, actually, the way you treat you dog I expect that to be in China not in the US where peope supposedly love dogs so much. If you need a cart to give your dog excersize there's something terribly wrong. You might consider NOT having a dog or treat it like one, not like a horse. And yes, dogs have a purpose. I guess you own sheep and cattle? Because THAT's what it was bred for.
@4240ed I looked it up. Did you know it wasn't allowed for someone to sit on the cart? They were allowed to use it for shopping or milk, whatever, but not for humans.
@Saartje05 Source please... I looked too, and haven't found anything regarding pulling as mistreatment. So, if you have the source, I'd be very interested in analyzing it. :)
hey this is soooo awsome i know u answerd teh lower question below but what i only have two bicycle wheels and want to make one could you try and give me some ideas to what i could use to make one thanx :)
oh wow oh wow! thats so neat! To comment on the hate comments you can tell the dog is not in any pain and it maybe as the owner says..hes enjoying it. the owner probably knows how much weight the dog can handle and would never put to much on.
Wow! I didn't realise rough collies had the power to do this, but your cart is so beautifully balanced he looks like he finds it really very comfortable - and he's thoroughly enjoying himself. Great physical and mental stimulation for your dog, and great that you have such a traffic free area for him too. Most collies don't get to have this much fun!
helllo i luv the dog i was just wondering how did you make or where did you get that cart from also i was wondering how did you train dillon to do that
@voyagerrulz If it's not cruel why do we have a law for more than hundred years saying it is cruel? A dog like this isn't bred for this kind of work. Buy a pony or take a team of huskies. Not a single dog.
how exacltley is this cruel your just pathetic and dont know how to hve fun and u dont know very much idiot head because dogs were orianly bred to pull they enjoy it! and dillion seems to love it so find something else to complin about!
hey i dont know what people are saying about this being cruel because it is not your dog seems to enjoy it alot i would do it with my 3 staffys if i had three pulling harnesses and 1 very nice cart to go in that would be my dreamer because mine are so well behaved (sometimes) ther arnt nasty with other dogs they are just nutcases litterally lol love the dog by the way
@twinnies1234 Haha! I can just imagine three staffies pulling a cart - they're so strong and would be having such great fun that you'd probably break the speed limit!
Exactly what about this is cruel? Are you saying that the act of being harnessed is cruel? In that case, why is it ok for a horse and not a dog? Seriously, dogs have been doing this longer than horses have, and it's pretty obvious that they don't have any problem with it.
Im trying to teach my Shepherd/Husky to pull a cart, we have a sled dog harness, but we will probably have to get a harness the likes of yours. Where did you get your cart? I've been looking for a while now.
too cute! hey, if huskies can pull sleds I don't see why not other breeds can't if they want to of their own free will, and they enjoy it and this one seems to. He's telling everybody "Look humans! look what I can do!" hehe
Wow! A very powerful looking collie dog. Is it a male? We have a female one and I'm quite sure she would fall head over heels for that handsome cartwheeler of yours at first sight :D. That exercise is also sure to keep your dog fit for the rest of his life =).
i l0ve how that other dog is just siting there in the cart you collie is beautiful.. i have a border collie. shes an awsome dog and i love her to death
he's a handsome boy. Collie's are great at everything...sledding, see and eye, search and rescue, agility, herding, guard dog, anything really! I had a shetland sheepdog once...a little shorter than Dillian but an awesome guy. I miss him. He loved playing and herding and going to the beach to chase gulls.
This looks like fun....Im getting a sled thing like that so my Pit bulls can pull me...I love the breed...And collies german shepherds alot more breeds,I really love them all!!!!!!!!!!
Wow....I need one of those too! I own a rough collie too.....This sure would help with the gas prices being so awful right now! Looks like fun. Collies are the best breed for sure!
Sure you can buy them. The ones that you can find for sale are dorsal hitch sulkies. They cost $1200 and up. I recently bought one myself. You can buy them at dogscooter*com and rjwalsh*com. If you want a cheaper side shaft sulky then you would probably need to build it. You can find instructions on how to train a carting dog online. Books on how to train driving horses are very helpful. I would also reccomend joining the yahoo groups Drivingdogs and Chariotsofthedogs.
It is a side shaft sulky. I made it. It was originally for a 20 lb sheltie. You can see it and other carts in my video "Shelties and Collies Carting". I have had to build any and all carts that I use for little dogs.
Such fun. And Dillon looks like he is having such a good time! We're building my spaniel's new cart right now, since her old one just didn't work well, and wasn't balanced enough for her. She loves having something to do(Border Collie mix, she needs an energy releaser that's not destructive), but I need ehr to be comfortable doing it. :D
What a great carting dog Dillon is! My shelties love to cart too. They celebrate whenever I get out the harnesses because they can't wait to go carting.

Isn't the bar connecting the cart to the harness suppose to be parallel to the ground to relieve the stress on their joints or something?

oh wow oh wow! thats so neat! To comment on the hate comments you can tell the dog is not in any pain and it maybe as the owner says..hes enjoying it. the owner probably knows how much weight the dog can handle and would never put to much on.
great job creating such a cart!

NormyPie 1 year ago
helllo i luv the dog i was just wondering how did you make or where did you get that cart from also i was wondering how did you train dillon to do that

its not creul the dog is certianly not straining to pull that cart at all you can tell by how lightly he is moving
voyagerrulz 2 years ago 11
@voyagerrulz If it's not cruel why do we have a law for more than hundred years saying it is cruel? A dog like this isn't bred for this kind of work. Buy a pony or take a team of huskies. Not a single dog.

BelgianMalinoisfreak 2 years ago
how exacltley is this cruel your just pathetic and dont know how to hve fun and u dont know very much idiot head because dogs were orianly bred to pull they enjoy it! and dillion seems to love it so find something else to complin about!
lj7471 2 years ago
hey i dont know what people are saying about this being cruel because it is not your dog seems to enjoy it alot i would do it with my 3 staffys if i had three pulling harnesses and 1 very nice cart to go in that would be my dreamer because mine are so well behaved (sometimes) ther arnt nasty with other dogs they are just nutcases litterally lol love the dog by the way
twinnies1234 2 years ago
@twinnies1234 Haha! I can just imagine three staffies pulling a cart - they're so strong and would be having such great fun that you'd probably break the speed limit!
NormyPie 1 year ago
Exactly what about this is cruel? Are you saying that the act of being harnessed is cruel? In that case, why is it ok for a horse and not a dog? Seriously, dogs have been doing this longer than horses have, and it's pretty obvious that they don't have any problem with it.

Im trying to teach my Shepherd/Husky to pull a cart, we have a sled dog harness, but we will probably have to get a harness the likes of yours. Where did you get your cart? I've been looking for a while now.
ringostarr37 2 years ago
I made the cart. You can buy simillar carts made for small mini horses, but the best ones are homemade.

queensunstar21 2 years ago 2
I've heard of horse power, but "dog" power? Lol!
too cute! hey, if huskies can pull sleds I don't see why not other breeds can't if they want to of their own free will, and they enjoy it and this one seems to. He's telling everybody "Look humans! look what I can do!" hehe
danalia 2 years ago
Wow! A very powerful looking collie dog. Is it a male? We have a female one and I'm quite sure she would fall head over heels for that handsome cartwheeler of yours at first sight :D. That exercise is also sure to keep your dog fit for the rest of his life =).

he's a handsome boy. Collie's are great at everything...sledding, see and eye, search and rescue, agility, herding, guard dog, anything really! I had a shetland sheepdog once...a little shorter than Dillian but an awesome guy. I miss him. He loved playing and herding and going to the beach to chase gulls.
hal0561 3 years ago
He is very good at his job. Our collie used
to pull us in the sled and our little red wagon. He loved it. Where's the cat-only Barbie dolls in a shoebox.

How do you find or make a carriage>?
kamiismydog 3 years ago
I made it. The undercarriage and wheels are from a jogging stroller. The seat is a wire basket with PVC on the seat. I them upholstered it.

Wow cool! Pretty dog! I really want to do this with my dogs but I bet they would be scared to do it! Do you know where I could buy one??
ILoveDerekHough12 3 years ago
Sure you can buy them. The ones that you can find for sale are dorsal hitch sulkies. They cost $1200 and up. I recently bought one myself. You can buy them at dogscooter*com and rjwalsh*com. If you want a cheaper side shaft sulky then you would probably need to build it. You can find instructions on how to train a carting dog online. Books on how to train driving horses are very helpful. I would also reccomend joining the yahoo groups Drivingdogs and Chariotsofthedogs.
ColonialCarter 3 years ago
Theres is also a place that gives instructions for making a simple one :)
aspca1866 3 years ago
It is a side shaft sulky. I made it. It was originally for a 20 lb sheltie. You can see it and other carts in my video "Shelties and Collies Carting". I have had to build any and all carts that I use for little dogs.
ColonialCarter 3 years ago
What kind of cart is that? My Sheltie loves to cart and I can't find one that looks light enough for him because he's a small dog.
sheltieagility101 3 years ago
I remember Dillon when he was visiting Colonial Williamsburg and he was quite the rage! And truly did seem to love what he was doing.
BlondWolf 3 years ago
HopelesslyDistraught 3 years ago

What a great carting dog Dillon is! My shelties love to cart too. They celebrate whenever I get out the harnesses because they can't wait to go carting.
