McCain was the fall guy who never had a chance. The first rule of politics is to never forget your base. The base of the GOP is conservatism while John McCain spent decades fighting against those values, ie. McCain-Lieberman, McCain-Fiengold, McCain-Kennedy amnesty, etc....The most conservative GOP candidate was the former Libertarian, Ron Paul who ironically was stopped in the delegate process by, you guessed it conservatives.

Right now they don't even get decent healthcare. And he totally backed down on his stand against torture.
