you know ppl can die while a airbag pops in their face?? the bag has nitrogen gas pellets so it has about 130 f. gas in the bag so it can burn your face 3 degree
yes, i was in an accident a few months ago, and i was wearing my seat belt, and the airbags deployed, and i now have severe neck pain 24/7. Doctors say the airbag saved me from having mostly back pain, but since the airbag went off, my back stayed in place while my neck jerked forward, also giving me severe whiplash.
the reason why these american ones are so intense is because car designers have to factor in the culture of not wearing seatbelts!
its called SRS (supplementary restraint system) because it's supposed to be used in conjunction with seatbelts. but because so many americans don't wear seatbelts, airbags have to be more violent and dashboards have to be softer and more padded.
@Rawrzellers It did exactly what it was supposed to. Your eyes (and the video) just aren't fast enough to see it. People come out of crashes and say The airbag is out but I don't think it worked. It is supposed to deploy and deflate that quickly, it isnt closed, it has holes in it.
I was in a car accident 3 months ago, a drunk driver hit me and a friend...now my jaw and teeth are all messed up, thanks for posting this video, it gives me a better understanding of what happened to me.
the answer about the dash, it is designed to blow off towards the windshield. Make damn sure your feet are not on the dash when it goes off. Air bag safety distances are 5-10-20, 5 for driver side, 10 for steering wheel, and 20 for the passenger, 5-10-20 is all in inches. safe point for hands on a steering wheel are 9 and 3. it is he new practice. If you are driving a hybrid car, airbags are all over, make sure you tell the fire fighter on scene how to shut off the vehicle. it is really helpful.
No, airbags are a one-time use item. After the explosive charge in the airbag has deployed the airbag, it can not re-deploy. Some airbags contain two explosive charges so it may deploy twice, again in the event of a secondary collision in an accident.
ALL deployed airbags MUST be replaced with new.
In minor crashes if the airbags do go off, the cost of replacement of the airbags is sometimes more than the cost to repair damages to the vehicle (speaking from experience). Airbags are expensive.
@bestamerica It wouldn't work if, heaven forbid, you had another crash. The reason is that a kind of chemical "burns" to create nitrogen gas very quickly, and that's what inflates the air bag. The "inflator module" would need replaced.
The dash is designed not to blow off. It has been cut on the back side to allow it to tear in a controlled manner when the airbag deploys. Now if you have a habit of holding something in your mouth, or drinking out of a coffee mug. That would probably do some damage. But it's not very likely that that would kill you.
I had airbags go off when I rear-ended another vehicle, was going probably around 15km/h at the time of impact, they still went off.
Had bruises on my wrists for weeks from the air bag.
The truck was considered a write-off by insurance, even though only the front bumper and grille were damaged, due to the cost of replacement of the airbags.
Oh and before you say "stop tailgating", I'll say this: A) company truck and B) bad brakes which were fine in normal braking, but failed at slamming on
Which means you are cuplible of driving a vehicle that was poorly maintained and have commited a felony offence.
The company that owns the vehicle is cuplible of not maintaining the vehicle to the required standards mandated for registration and for worker-safety laws.
Don't excuse it - you did something very wrong.
I won't let work vehicles out if they have a minor dent, let alone stuffed brakes!
Before you start bashing people's posts, at least try to use proper spelling and grammar.
FYI "cuplible" is not a word.
By the way, when I said the brakes "were fine in normal braking, but failed at slamming on" what I meant by that is I couldn't have known the brakes wouldn't slam on, because in normal day-to-day driving you don't need to slam them on (unless you're an aggressive driver). So I didn't know the brakes were poorly maintained until it was too late.
The issue you have with your vehicle is that it's poorly maintained. The criminal aspects come in when you drive it on the public road. It is a criminal offence to drive an unwarrantable vehicle on the road.
mine just went off the car wasn't even in an accedent it just went off didn't hit anything just a loose bumper on the passenger side with no one on that side of the car do you think a sensor to test for people on that side of the car was too big a cost or did that idea just go straight over thier heads
The passenger airbag in the vid is aimed directly at the passenger. The airbag in your sunfire is probably like a lot of other cars. They deploy upwards (breaking the windshield) then at the passenger.
Earlier airbags did have the potential to hurt you, but most newer airbags are "dual stage" and deploy with varying levels of force depending on speed/severity of the crash and/or occupant weight and/or seatbelt usage and are much safer. Still, the injuries caused by an airbag will be much less severe than the injuries they prevent.
He was driving, illegally without his license in his mom's car and she didn't know about it but still. He couldn't really sue considering he wasn't supposed to be driving.

passenger airbags aren't even necessary. a little seat belt tension does the job (back in the 80s a well-designed seat belt could keep a passenger from striking the dash at 35 mph)
Driver airbags are important because there is much less space between driver and steering wheel.
Yeah, my buddy crunched his mom's Hyundai Santa Fe and he just went right through the air bag and broke his nose on the steering wheel, better than a broken skull though.
This would only occur if you were an idiot, or an american, and you were NOT wearing a seat belt.
Airbags have that little "SRS" acryonym before the word "airbag".. That stands for SUPPLIMENTAL RESTRAINT SYSTEM - not PRIMARY restraint system. That's what the seat belt would be for.
so you don't smash your face off the dash, it doesn't cushion the blow, it tries to slow your body down so you don't crush your skull on the dash of the vehicle.
@inuyashazelda778 Only if you are sitting too close to it, or if you're riding in front before you meet the height requirements (I doubt one would be pulled over for that unless it was a child who still had a car seat of any kind, and there was no obvious reason for them to be in front, plus a cop couldn't tell if the vehicle had an air bag)
If you're positioned properly, you will hit it after it's already inflated, and that's how it was meant to protect you.
its not a Dodge its a 2007 GMC Sierra. The truck was stolen off the factory lot, recovered, and than GM decided to donate it for educational purposes.
Daaang... that was cool, lol. Would most likely hurt too... did the hand rest above the air bag pop up? My Chevorlet Tahoe has the same air bag and hand rest. I dodn't know it comes up. Does it pop up to make room for the cover to come up all of the way?
the panel on the front does flip down, so if you have passengers that like to put their legs on the dash it would be advised that they don't as their legs would become mush if the bag were to deploy
