  • My Sensei teaches these moves really fast and it's hard for me to catch up, so this is EXACTLY what I've been looking for! Thank you so much!!! :D

  • @ProudLilShortie You're very welcome for the breakdown and that's exactly why I made it in such a way...to really teach people how to do it. :) I'd be very happy to hear your thoughts on my other kata videos which are also up. Keep up the training.

  • I take shotakan too and your fundamentals are all wrong. One you bow with your head up. Two your belt should be facing straight forward.

  • @JdrewG Shotokan has a few divisions within it. The style in particular that I'm representing in this video is SKIF or Shotokan Karate International Federation. At its core, Shotokan is what it is, but there are different little takes on it here and there. What I'm demonstrating is correct based on SKIF's teachings. Thanks for commenting.

  • After 40 years study of Shoto kan karate, IMHO it's a bit of myth to say twisting 45 degrees 'makes the block more powerful'. And this is easy to prove or disprove with an impact bag. Hanmi versus shomen = shomen is the winner everytime.

  • thats not pinan shodan

  • very use full

  • @dt103g3 Thank you!

  • Great demonstration. Thank you very much. Pity that the peanut gallery in the background made it much harder to hear the instruction. :{

  • Paul this is a revelation - it all makes sense - thanks. Question though - you say this is a white belt kata, but i though the taikyoku shodan was the white belt kata. I'm sure I'm wrong - I'd just like to know!

  • @stumpefgecko Both Taikyoku Shodan and Heian Shodan are typically taught white belts, with Heian (depending on the dojo) sometimes being taught first and thus replacing Taikyoku altogether. Though technically,Taikyoku is the more basic of the two like you said.

  • Hi Paul, great stuff, thanks! I'm teaching my kids now, been at shotokan myself for 40 years. Too bad those guys in the background of your vid couldn't stay quiet for 6 minutes! Oss

  • @parkermartin161 Thank you pal, I appreciate the positive feedback.

  • would this be the same kaka for bukindai thanks

  • @rooneyohyes1, the fundamentals are similar so I think it would still be beneficial for you if that's your style.

  • @PaulGale thanks

  • Great breakdown of the Heian Shodan. Would be great to see same type of breakdowns of the other Heian katas and in future of all official katas in Shotokan karate.

There is a list of official ones ( not sure if i have managed to get it complete ) that points towards Hirokazu Kanazawa showing all Kata in Shotokan. BUT, its old and he does not breakdown the Katas the way you do. Would be great to se such a list of movies from you in the same fashion as this one.

keep up the great movies paul.

  • @trograin, hey thank you for the compliment and actually, that is exactly what I intend on doing. I will eventually have a full listing of all couple dozen Shotokan Karate katas done in a similar style. I want to first break them down step by step and then go through them at regular speed. Thanks for watching.

  • faultless teaching and anyone who disagress has it wrong i wish you and you club all the best. this is how shotokan should be done keep up the videos

  • @putty2812, thank you so much! I also recently did a video on the philosophy behind the "kiay".
